Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is the regurgitation of gastric contents into oesophagus resulting in burning sensation in the chest due to irritation of oesophageal mucosa by acidic gastric contents. This can be due to reduced tone of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) permitting reflux when the intra-abdominal pressure rises as in pregnancy, obesity etc. Certain dietary factors also tend to relax the LOS like chocolate, fatty foods, alcohol, coffee, fried items etc. A defective oesophageal peristaltic activity is also a reason for GERD since it can lead to delayed oesophageal clearance and increased acid exposure time. Thus we can see that injury caused to oesophageal mucosa by the gastric acid is the pathology and aim of management is to ensure healing. - Causes of GERD - Treatments for GERD in Ayurveda - Complications of GERD - Diet for GERD - GERD in Obese patients
