Rosewood Journal - Issue 3, Olivier Lutz, Rosewood Hotel Group New York Office- Sales and Marketing Intern
1. OLIVIER LUTZ
Sales and Marketing Intern, Americas and Europe
Final Year Student at the École hôtelière de Lausanne
2. What was your first contact with Rosewood?
I was born and raised in France but chose to study in Switzerland for the quality and
uniqueness of its education in the hospitality management business.
As a student at the École hôtelière de Lausanne I have been lucky to meet and to learn
from the best about the hospitality industry, which I am a passionate about.
During the Career Fair organized at my school I got to listen to someone as passionate
as I am, explaining the Ways We Work (WWW) of Rosewood – Engaging, Intuitive
and Refined.
Where did you go for your internship?
On top of putting to practice what I learned at school, I really wanted to experience a
new culture during my internship. Discovering new things every day and being part of
a melting pot is what I wanted. Therefore, I decided to strive to do my best in order to
find an internship in New York City.
Persistence, willingness and patience led me to the unexpected opportunity of being
the first apprentice working as a Sales and Marketing Intern, Americas and Europe in
Rosewood’s Regional Sales Office in New York.

3. What were your duties during your internship?
I joined Rosewood Hotel Group in February 2015.
Early during my internship, I was sent to the corporate office in Dallas, TX. I have to
say that seeing the first hotel in our collection, The Mansion on Turtle Creek, helps a
lot to feel part of the family.
While helping the corporate sales and marketing team I have been introduced to a
wide array of disciplines, from advertising strategy and execution, requests for
advertising agency proposals, overall marketing and CRM strategies, to business
analysis, forecasting and project assessment.
For instance, I had the opportunity to help prepare our brand bridal photo-shoot at the
latest property we were appointed to manage, the beautiful Rosewood Castiglion del
Bosco in Tuscany, Italy.
What have you learned during your internship?
I learned a lot on a personal level. I wholeheartedly believe that the hospitality
business is an industry where you have to be ready to take every opportunity. You
must not be afraid to explore, travel and talk to people working with you and sharing
the same passion.
Of course, you need to understand the financial side of our industry but you have to
remember that the hotel business is and will always be a people business.
4. What fascinates you about the hotel industry?
Hospitality is all about living a journey: meeting new, inspiring people, discovering a
different culture, understanding history much better, learning things that you didn’t
even knew they existed, etc.
My mentor used to tell me that “passionate people provide passionate experiences” -
there is nothing more accurate than that. If you’re not passionate you cannot actually
translate that to somebody else. Passion is not something you learn; you can teach
technical skills but you can’t teach passion and curiosity. You can approach things
with a certain attitude and you can approach things with a distinct curiosity, and those
two things together can drive one to be successful in any career.
According to you, what sets Rosewood apart from its competitors?
I fell in love with the company and its “A Sense of Place” philosophy.
We allow people from around the world, whether they stay with us for business or
leisure, to experience the city they are visiting as a local. Our guests stay with us
because it inspires a passion within them, something they will remember and do not
usually experience in their own home; this is what hospitality is all about.
Rosewood is managed by an open-minded millennial and I believe that a new way of
thinking is needed to change some of the outmoded standards of our industry.
