MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS POST:
• The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that patients and visitors receive
the level of service that conforms to LOC vision, aspiration and values.
• Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality
individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers, without supervision, in
collaboration with the multi disciplinary team
• The post holder will deputise for their line manager. This may involve dealing with
complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.
• He or she is responsible in ensuring that the operational services and the patient
pathway experience is first class.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
Responsibilities
• To undertake the first level assessment of the needs of the patient and family.
• To complete documentation relating to patient care and discuss these with the
clinical team.
• To develop and maintain clinical competency in cannulation, care of CVADs and
administration techniques.
• To facilitate enabling, continuity and consistency of the therapeutic effect of care
through consultation with the patient, the family and other health care
professionals.
• To liaise and work closely with relevant Clinical Nurse Specialists / Clinic Doctor /
Clinical Team / Consultants / Primary Care Teams in the provision of a
professional critical care / cancer nursing service, and use skills identified for the
post to provide a specialist input to the care that is planned for and delivered to
individual patients.
• To assess the educational and informational needs of the patient and family. This
includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum
understanding of nursing care and the likely outcome.
• To enable the patient and family to participate in the planning of care. To assist
with teaching in preparation for investigations, treatment and home care.
• To demonstrate a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to the patient with
cancer to ensure that physiological, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of
the patient and family are met.
• In consultation with members of the multi-disciplinary team, to combine different
approaches to care when this is appropriate and requested by the patient.
• To enhance care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes
when planning and delivering nursing care.
• To evaluate nursing care that has been given and alerts the clinical team /
Consultant to the patient's changing health care needs.
• To contribute to Leaders in Oncology Care strategy for patients undergoing
treatment/clinical trials, and ensuring adherence to the principle of informed
consent, with all treatments.
• Maintain and update own clinical expertise and contribute as role model to
ensure the delivery of nursing care is at highest possible level to meet patient
care.
Managerial
• In rotation with other Senior Staff Nurses, to take charge of the unit/clinical
environment in the absence of senior personnel.
• In the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse maintain a skilled nursing
presence so as to facilitate a team approach for nursing interventions according to
the needs of the patient and family.
• To help foster a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale.

• To be familiar of all policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care
professionals to ensure that these are observed.
• To work closely with the team to ensure that clinical standards of care are
achieved within the unit and to participate in the audit of clinical care.
• To promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff.
• Keep abreast of health & safety legislation.
Education
• To maintain awareness of current advances in cancer treatment, care and
research. Using relevant educational opportunities, to maintain the highest
standards and up-to-date care offered to the patient with cancer.
• To act on request as the preceptor to staff and assist in the assessment of their
competencies.
• To participate in planned programmes of appraisal with the Deputy/Head Nurse.
• To participate in the educational programme at LOC.
• To participate in the orientation of staff.
• Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and
supporting colleagues, including support staff to promote a cohesive team and
the achievement of team objectives
• To contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive learning
environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY (Professional Development)
• In consultation with the Deputy /Head Nurse agree learning objectives designed to
meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate
programmes of study.
• To gain teaching skills by undertaking the teaching and assessing course and
applying the principles within the clinical setting.
• At the request of the Deputy / Head Nurse accept responsibility to develop
managerial skills within the clinical setting. This includes planning duty rotas which
match unit needs with available expertise.
• Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required. Identify areas
where local audit is needed, conduct the audit and analyse the data with support.

In order to perform this role to experienced worker standard the post holder will need:
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS
• NMC Registered Nurse
• Relevant post registration courses in Chemotherapy / Oncology Nursing
• Assessing and mentoring qualification
• Contemporaneous experience within Cancer specialty with significant experience in
the outpatient treatment setting.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
SKILLS /ABILITIES
• Skilled in Phlebotomy / Cannulation / Care of CVADs/ IV administration
• Sound patient assessment skills
• Ability to delegate and prioritise.
• Effective preceptorship / mentorship skills
• Ability to motivate and contribute to team working
• Computer literate
• Good written and spoken English language skills
• Basic cardiac life support
• Advanced life support
