Energy Management for
Residence in a Community
Apartment Complex in

2. Main Focus for Pilot Case
Generate data from a multi-residential building as input for the
Cassandra platform modelling capability.
Implement two different energy efficiency programmes addressing
multi-residential building inhabitants by using the Cassandra platform
with decision makers and to evaluate the effect of such initiatives in a
real-life pilot setting.
Evaluate the Cassandra platform usefulness and its prediction
capability from the view of The pilot user-group.

4. Setting of Pilot Case
Brf Senioren
– One Building
– Three entrances
– 33 apartments
– 43 people all 55+ in age
– 33 garages
– Library and common room (kitchen)
– Laundry room
– Cold storage room for food storage
5. Brf Senioren
• One contract with Luleå Energy (flex-el) all apartment owners share the
cost for the electricity consumption. For heating there is district heating. .
• The tenants have during the last years worked consciously with strategies
and activities for reduction of electricity consumption. (change of
equipment, extra isolation, energy-efficient washing machines, information
meetings where energy saving strategies have been discussed etcetera)
• Want to take one step further and understand what is really the energy
consumers in their building. Further to know consumption in each
apartment, which they don’t know today.
• Have a list of possible solutions, but want help in understanding, making
grounded decisions and to act.
6. Different Phases
• Baseline data.
• Feedback Program .
• Demand Respons Program.
• Questionnaires
• Workshops
• Interviews

7. Technical set-up at
Brf Senioren
Cassandra Measurement
Setup:
• Measurement of all the
electricity usage in the
apartment building.
Individual measurement
in each apartment.
• The electricity is
measured once a
minute, minute values
are stored in a DB and
distributed to the
Cassandra platform
using an API.
10. Comparing Energy Consumption in Two Apartment.
Here peaks in usage comes at around 09:00,
13:00 and 21-22:00 during a day. For this
month the total consumption of energy was
104,8 kWh.
Peaks here come between 08:00-13:00 and
again from 18:30 and forward. These peaks are
very distributed and the only clear pattern is that
at approx. 11:00 the consumption is high and
again at 21:00. This apartment had a total
consumption of 425,8 kWh during the month.
11. Interactions with Tenants
• To create baseline understanding on
knowledge and interest in energy
saving as well as in what motivates
to changes in behaviour.
– Initial questionnaire, October 2012
– 3 Workshops, May/June 2013
(Involved 15 informants in total
(4+6+5))
– Individual Interviews (9 informants)
– Interview guides – open ended
questions
– Recorded – transcribed
12. Workshops at Senioren
• 3 workshops
• Theme ”Energy savings” (motivation to change and
save)
Type of questions:
– Tell us about your energy consumption today
– Thoughts on the energy debate
– Tips and ideas for energy saving
13. Results from the first interviews at Senioren
• 9 individual interviews
• Theme ”Information on Energy Savings / Energy
Consumption” (How to visualise energy consumption)
Type of Questions:
– Distinction between energy saving / energy
consumption
• Where do you find information on energy saving /
energy consumption
• Information content
– Dream on – i.e. How they would like it to be in the
future
14. Results…
• The tenants are very aware in Energy Saving Issues
– Have ideas and thoughts on how to save
– Have done this for a long time
– Being a house owner is a good school
• Main motivations are:
– Saving money
– Environmental reasons
– But, other motivators can also be identified
• Concerns
– Reasonable levels of saving
– Feelings of prohibitions
16. Feedback Program at Senioren
Two screens with visualisation of energy
consumption
• One screen in common areas
showing five bars
– One bar for all apartments in each
entrance (three bars)
– One bar for all garages
– One bar for the common areas on
ground floor (library, kitchen, meeting
room etcetera)
• One screen in basement ”meeting
spot” showing four bars
– One bar for cold room
– One bar for laundry room
– One bar for the two handicraft rooms
– One bar for sauna (inkl lights) and gym
16
17. • Detailed data per apartment in
web portal.
– Access from own computer
– One small computer (windows)
connected to large screen in
meeting room making it possible
to enter the SABER web for
more detailed data information
• Each tenant have recieved a
consumption (apartment
level), and statistics for all
common areas

Feedback Program at
Senioren (cont)
18. Next Steps
– Offer the tenants individual ”consultancy” of their personal energy
consumption. analysing energy consumption patterns using the
Cassandra platform and SABER.
– A few workshops using the Cassandra platform. (with board)
• Will help decide on demand response programs to implement
in the fall as well as giving input to design of Cassandra
platfrom
– Formative usefulness evaluation activities with Cassandra
platform prototype will be used to influence the platform
functionality and to decide for further implementation priories.
(other stakeholders)
– Demand Respons Program implemented
– Follow-up workshops / interviews, dates to be decided
– 1-2 academic papers
