A MESSAGE FROM THE FOSAS DIRECTOR
Hello Friends,
I was thinking of a quote from Anton Chekov, “People don’t notice
whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” In theory, that may
be true for some people in colder climates, but in reality, we at the
Sharon Art Studio will notice this summer with particular excitement.
So many amazing changes are happening in the coming weeks. With
our anticipated roof abatement to be completed in June, we will
resume classes with a special degree of happiness and improvement
with our building.
We at the studio are noticing the enthusiasm of the young artists who
will soon be enjoying our annual Art in the Park summer programming.
I am continuing to meet new and renewing FOSAS members who are
helping our mission of sustaining and enhancing the Studio’s goal to
promote artistic development, craftsmanship, and creative expression.
I’ve recently launched a “What Does FOSAS Do?” Communication
initiative via social media, electronic newsletters and studio print-outs.
My goal is to help inform our community about where our resources
go and what we are accomplishing as an organization. Just this past
spring, we held a successful “Pre-Patty Meld” restaurant fundraiser
at The Corner Store where we raised approximately $400. FOSAS
held our annual Family Free Clay Day on March 22, where over
60 individuals participated and learned some hand-building clay
techniques. We also launched a special partnership with CA Academy
of Science on March 28. With respect to Mr. Chekov, these are all
happy events that make me notice the beauty of Sharon Art Studio
every season.

INSTRUCTOR INSPIRATION
Do you consider yourself an artist? What about your family or friends, are
they artists? What makes someone an artist?
I have been teaching art for the past decade, and one of the things I
have come to realize is that everyone is an artist! The difference between
someone who identifies as an artist and one who doesn’t is interest and
repetition. The distinguished artist was interested enough to repeat certain
exercises which allowed he or she to graduate in skill level.
When we were young we all wanted to learn to write. It was only through
learning the basic strokes and repetition that we got better and eventu-
ally developed our own style. Guess what? It’s the same with drawing. In
fact, you’ve been drawing all of your life! You probably drew something
already today, and will draw more before going to bed tonight. The same
straight and curved lines, circles, squares and triangles of the alphabet
and number system are what everyone has been drawing. Every letter you
write is a drawing. The alphabet is merely a collection of shape combina-
tions that we understand as letters. Your ability to learn to write your ABC’s
is no different from learning to draw a fruit, a plant or even the human
form.
Remember, like the title of the article says: everyone is an artist. Practice,
repeat, and make art!
Here’s a challenge: The next time you make a note to yourself, or when you
are on the phone and there is a paper and pen nearby, doodle! Draw lines,
shapes, letters, spirals, anything that comes to mind. If you like your doodle,
grab another piece of paper and redraw it, or just keep adding to the
original. Let loose! Elaborate on the lines! Keep going, and be inspired!

workshops, as well as providing scholarships for low-income youth and adults, and managing
public and community outreach.
All expeditures beyond SFRPD’s Studio budget are made possible with the generous support of
the studio’s Friends. Contributions made to FOSAS go towards employing administrative staff;
purchasing equipment and supplies for all classes; community outreach and free programs for
youth; printing and mailing quarterly class catalog; volunteer appreciation; and expanding
accessibility of the arts to the general public. Donations to FOSAS subsidize our program costs
so that Sharon Art Studio classes remain one of the most affordable arts and craft classes in the
Bay Area. Scholarships are available for all of our classes, and it’s very easy to apply!

The Sharon Art Studio operates under the auspices of the San Francisco Recreation & Park
Department and in collaboration with the Friends of Sharon Art Studio (FOSAS). Over forty

arts. The Department employs staff instructors, pays for utilities, maintains the facility, and
ensures the program best serves the needs of the public. The Department has a city-wide
