Right Angles – Zigzagging to Success
Carrice A. Quinnie
“Success doesn’t come to you…you go to it.” Marva Collins. We must go towards
success – make the effort.
If we want to go from point A to point B, what would be the quickest route? We all have been
thought the quickest way to get from point A to point B is a straight, right. However, let’s
imagine point B was up a steep hill, what would be the best route now?
Studies say there is a point where it becomes metabolically too costly to go straight ahead, so
people must move at an angle, cutting into the slope. Eventually, we need to go back towards
the direction we were headed, this creates zigzags. The steeper the slope, the more important it
is to tackle it at the Right Angle. The bigger the promotion, we have to approach it at the Right
Angle. The more grandiose the dream, we must approach it at the Right Angle.
We may have set backs but we must go back towards the direction in which we were headed,
create our zigzags. What are zigzags? Zigzags are just continuous chains of Right Angles.
When we approach our dreams at the Right Angles, we will zigzag to success.
“Success doesn’t come to you… you go to it.”
Henry Ford had 5 failed businesses before he founded Ford Motor Company. He made 5
different Right Angles to obtain to his dreams. Creating 5 zigzags at 5 continuous Right Angles,
he zigzagged to success.
Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard and his first business failed, Traf-O- Data (the name was an
epic fail also), before creating Microsoft. Bill gates did not stop. He zigzagged at different
Right Angles and was finally successful in creating Microsoft.
Thomas Edison made 1,000 zigzags. Thomas Edison made 1, 000 failed attempts at inventing
the light bulb. Just imagine having to re-collect thoughts, data and re-approach at a different
Right Angle 1,000 times. He did it and so can we!
“Success doesn’t’ come to you…you go to it.”
[Insert personal success story of an Aflac Employee]
“Success doesn’t come to you…you go to it.”
We must go towards success – make the effort, never stop, just approach at another Right Angle.
We are at point A now, set a destination for point B. If problems or disappointments come, do
not stop; just approach from a different angle, the Right Angle. The line to success is never
straight; take the Right angle and zigzag to success.

The Hispanic Marketing Initiative - The Drive, the Discipline and Delivering the Dream
with 4DX
Carrice Quinnie
The Hispanic population is the fastest growing segment in the United States,
having grown from 35.3 million persons in 2000 to an estimated 50.0 million today. According
to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population will continue to increase to over 100 million
by year 2050. As a result, Aflac answered the call of the Aflac Field Force by igniting The
Hispanic Marketing Initiative. Aflac is aligned to serve this growing customer population, and
our Field Sales Force, by providing Spanish-language point of sale materials, such as brochures
and outlines of coverage.
The Hispanic Marketing Initiative began January 2014, with the goal of introducing to
the Field Sales Force translations of both current and new lines of business, for all 50 states and
two US territories. Since the initiative began, the team has been comprised of personnel from
Translations, Sales Print and Communication, Product Compliance, Communicorp-Graphic Arts,
and Multi-Cultural Marketing. The team has introduced translations of the Cancer, Accident and
Short Term Disability lines of business, also introducing Hospital Indemnity, Life and CI Rider.
Currently the team is working on the Specified Health Event, Lump Sum Critical Illness, and
Accident Advantage products.
Mike Thomas, second vice president, Support Services, put it this way: "The 4DX
principles provide the perfect methodology for tackling such a daunting task. Everyone on the
team realizes the importance of this translation project, and 4DX gave us the focus and attention
we needed, enabling us to accomplish our goals."
The Hispanic Marketing Initiative team has gained momentum by incorporating the
following operational planning, execution methodologies, and disciplines outlined in The 4
Disciplines of Execution – 4DX:
1. Focus on Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) – Each department determines specific and
precise W.I.G.s, by using the format of going from X to Y by When. The WIGs generates
the initiative focus, setting the pace and ultimately driving each team to success.
2. Act on the Lead Measures – Once the WIGs are identified, the teams develop daily,
weekly and monthly measures of achievement. These measures will assist the teams in
monitoring their processes, and periodically identify the actions needed to positively
influence achievement of their goals.
3. Keep a Compelling Scoreboard – The discipline of engagement; driving the team to
perform. Scoreboards visually tell the story of who is “winning” and who is “losing”.
Daily scoreboards are sent to all the teams, and show who is reaching their projected
goals and who needs to put a little more effort towards completing their lead measures.
4. Create a Cadence of Accountability – The discipline of execution. Accountability is a
must for any successful effort. The fourth discipline makes all parties involved
4. responsible for upholding their commitments to the task. Teams commit themselves to
weekly WIG sessions to reaffirm the disciplines, and to drive the initiative’s dreams
toward completion.
“The initiative has helped the Field Force by providing Spanish translations. The Field
Force can target and penetrate the Hispanic market more effectively with the Spanish materials
that are now available” says Sandra Gallardo, Supervisor of Print and Communication Services.
“The Hispanic Marketing initiative provides the necessary tools to conquer a market that has so
much potential.”
The Hispanic Marketing Initiative fully supports the Aflac Strategic Pillars of “Focus on
Our Product Innovation” and “Owning Our Customer Experience”. To date, the initiative is
estimated to have provided an additional $3.5 million in new annual premium in 2014, and $2.5
million through the 1st
quarter of 2015. The Hispanic Marketing Initiative teams continue to
successfully drive the disciplines of 4DX, and deliver on the dream of providing nearly all of
Aflac’s product information to a rapidly growing Hispanic customer population.

I'm Tripping, Part I
I just got back from GHANA! I started preparing for my trip last year. During my
waiting period, the spark of traveling to Africa had been lit. Since childhood, I always
felt a connection to Africa. I guess it was something in my ancestral DNA, trying to
manifest.
Sidebar: Africa is a continent housing over 54 countries, 9 territories and
2 independent states. Africa is not a country. We have to reeducate
ourselves.
I was attracted to everything about the continent, but a deeper interest in Ghana was
growing. During my curiosity stage, I was lucky to befriend many Ghanaians on
Facebook. I was introduced to different aspects of the culture, history, differences in
family dynamics and some politics.
While waiting and preparing myself for a new wave in my life, I decided to finally do it
and just renew my passport and go to Ghana. Since I was being courted by a very nice
Ghanaian man - why not visit his country and see him in his element, while checking
something off of my Living My Life list.
After visiting the CDC site, I really only needed one vaccine and there were no health
alerts of Ebola or any other wild insect disease. I would need a prescription for malaria
to take right before, during, and after my trip and I was advised to only drink bottled
water.
Once I put action to my thoughts, things started to fall in place with ease. I renewed my
passport with no major problems. I had my flight. My family could take care of my
children while I traveled and I was approved for a 3 year visa. Nothing was holding me
back!
Except for one thing... the fear of others around me.
"Why are you going to Africa, alone?"
"It's not safe!"
6. "Do women have rights over there?"
"Carrice, you tripping, why are you doing this!?"
I got all sorts of questions and warnings from family and acquaintances. To their
surprise, I didn't let their fears control or dictate my actions and my life. I explained
what needed to be explained, I kissed and high-fived my children then boarded my KLM
flight to Ghana.
I was tripping! I was tripping (literally) all the way to Ghana to experience my life. I
was going to experience whatever Ghana had to offer. I was going to meet my
boyfriend's family and finally step foot on African soil. I wasn't afraid!
Waiting to board my first 8 hour flight, I felt an empowering peace. My closest friends
were excited for me and wished me the best. My children were excited to see their
mother living out one of her life goals. I was ready to take this step physically alone.
Spiritually, I felt a circle of cheering and dancing African ancestors, whom left the
continent by force, all around me. Their spirits were now going back to the continent
with me and they were there to support me every step of the way.
I was scheduled to take flight on a Boeing 787, but I was already flying. I had moved
past fear and procrastination. I was now following my intuition and experiencing My
Life.
I was nestled in my window seat, telling Hot-lanta see you later. There was no turning
back; I would be in Ghana in 16 hours.
Yes, I was tripping. I was tripping because I wanted to visit a country where the
majority of the people look like me. I felt my life changing. I didn't know the
depths, but I was ready for my experience.
I greeted my seat buddy. Smiled to myself and prepared for take-off...

Music and movement are very important to my family. Both of my school age children, Special K and Lady B, both
play musical instruments. I also played the viola for several years. My children know when Mommy plays music;
she’s in a good mood. I brag about how I beat my oldest daughter at the Just Dance Video game, while I was 8
months pregnant. So when I was asked to visit a local music class for kids I didn’t hesitate.
Music Together® Columbus brings an international music and movement enrichment program to the Columbus and
Valley areas. Music Together Columbus was started by Elizabeth Hostetter. Elizabeth wanted to give the area
families the opportunity to learn how early music, rhythm and movement instruction benefit’s total brain function in
children. She hopes, “Music Together will bring active music making back into the homes of families, so children
will learn basic musical skills through their environments.”
I decided to tag along with my two year old, The Duchess. I was encouraged to sign up for a Demo class.
I simply went to the Music Together® Columbus website, then under the Classes tab, I clicked the Demo
8. Class link. The process was easy! I very shortly after received a confirmation email with directions to the
center and class instructions.
The instructions were very good and it took me directly to my destination. I arrived with another mother
and her two children, so she greeted me and we walked to the class together. She mentioned how much
her children enjoyed the class. She knew The Duchess was in for a treat!
The other parents were very friendly, all greeting us with waves and smiles. They were taking their shoes
off, so I asked The Duchesses if she wanted to get ready for class and take her boots off. She looked at
me the way only a duchess could and plopped her thumb in her mouth and grunted, “No”.
OK here we go…

I took my shoes off and lead this royal thumb sucker to the circle. Elizabeth guided the rest of the class to
the circle and began to lead parents and little musicians in a morning introduction song, greeting each
child by name as we went around the circle. The Duchess was shocked when she was greeted by name!
This made her feel welcomed, she slowly began to relinquish her thumb and join the musical adventures.
After the third song, she finally decided to take her shoes off and participate independently.
The children were given the opportunity to ad-lib portions of songs and move the song along with their
imaginations. Elizabeth facilitated and encouraged the little singer-songwriters to explore various musical
instruments also. During the entire 45-minute class the children could move freely with the music and
songs, with limited restrictions. This was an enjoyable time for them to let loose and experiment with
various instruments and to use their imaginations and discover musical rhythms and count.
The Duchess enjoyed the class and it was a little morning workout for the parents. I was able to sing and
dance with my daughter and the closing song was a lovely lullaby. The lullaby subdued some of the
maestros into relaxing and calming some of their musical energies before class was dismissed. This
would be a great morning starter for any mother, father, and grandparent or child caregiver. After class
give them lunch or a snack and I guarantee, you will have about two hours of free time shortly afterwards.
The Duchess and I give Music Together 4 tiaras out of 5!
9. Music Together Columbus was a wonderful experience. The Duchess told everyone, “I played the drums
and sang songs!” for the rest of the day. I could hear her humming some of the tunes, even later in the
evening. The class most definitely had a positive effect on her. The Duchess and I give Music Together 4
tiaras out of 5! It was easy to schedule classes and the website gives detailed information. The
environment is welcoming and the children are free to participate in this experience with minimal
pressure. I would’ve enjoyed a couple of more cultural diverse song selections, but the children did enjoy
one Hispanic influenced selection.

Susan Darrow, CEO of Music Together® goes in depth illustrating the importance of experiencing music
as a family in her recent blog Holiday Family Sing-Alongs: Making Music Together. Music and movement
gives families’ the opportunity of being silly together, will help alleviate stress and facilitates family
togetherness.
The spring 2016 semester starts early March, so sign up for a demo class today. Let your little ones
discover all their musical talents with Music Together Columbus!
