VOLUME XXVII ISSUE NO. 1 • MARCH 2013
After winning first prize
in the NCR-SIP Competition
in the Regional Science and
Technology Fair 2012 last
October, held at Las Piñas
East National High School,
John Matthew D. Zarate,
IV-EC once again, emerged
champion in the National
Science Quest, organized
by ASEP (Association of Sci-
ence Educators in the Phil-
ippines), held at Teachers’
Camp, Baguio City last Feb-
ruary 8-10, 2013.
Zarate outsmarted sev-
eral participants from dif-
ferent secondary schools
in the Philippines. With his
SIP entitled “Carboxymethyl
Cellulose: A Biodegradable
Board for E-Circuits, Zarate
won in the Science Investiga-
tory Project (SIP), Cluster 1,
Individual Applied Category.
This was the same SIP he
defended in the NCR-SIP
tilt. Mrs. Elizabeth S. Joseph,
NNHS Science Teacher, was
his coach/adviser.
The study focused on
the feasibility of Nata de
Coco as a raw material in
the production of electronic
circuit boards. It showed a
promising solution to the
current standing of the
country and the world itself
as its continuous produc-
tion of waste, and also one
way to boost the Philippines’
economy. The study proved
that it will produce a board
for circuit that has high en-
durance, has flexibility and
several unique qualities from
our electronic cards nowa-
days. These cheaper boards
are biodegradable as well
as eco-friendly. This project
simply wanted to discover
feasibility of waste material
producing utility equipment
in the field of electronics.
The event was attended
by superintendents, supervi-
sors, principals and depart-
ment heads from different
secondary schools nation-
wide. Jonh Carl Alag

NNHS celebrates National Reading Month
NNHS celebrated the annual National Reading Month, last November with an array of
activities to promote the love for ‘reading’.
The fourth year students from EC administered a storytelling activities to Bagumbayan
Elementary School (BES) pupils from November 5-9. Dubbed “Kwentong may Kwenta”, the IV-
EC students, headed by Mrs. Mona Lisa F. Adriano read interesting stories to school children
of the BES.
Other activities were conducted by the NNHS English Teachers during the month-long
celebration were “Book sa Sulok” wherein teachers provided reading corners to encourage
students to spare their free time on reading while inside the campus; The “Basa Pasa”, a
whole school approach on reading was also conducted, which was headed by Mr. Marco D.
Meduranda; “Hindi ka Nag-iisa”, an oratorical contest which was participated by selected
students from all year levels; the “Bookworm Strom” and the Quiz Bee, for all year levels.
This event is in support of the ten-point Education agenda of the Aquino administration, to
promote the Every child a Reader Program (ECARP) and to commemorate the Birth anniversary
of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Sr., an ardent reader himself, who was born on
November 27, 1932. With Ninoy as an inspiration, this practical and creative tool to improve
literacy is as much about reading as it is about hope as reiterated on the writing of and about
Ninoy. John Matthew D. Zarate

TQC
Teachers’ Quality Circle
Collaborative teaching
The conception of Project M-CART has made teaching
learning more engaging and enjoyable for students in Navo-
tas National High school. The simple but innovative teaching
practice initiated by a few teachers has become a school-
based strategy and an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) de-
signed to decongest extra-large classes of 70-80 students per
class. It was made the main teaching tool in adoption and
implementation of M-ISOS (Modified-In School/ Out-School
Scheme in NNHS for SY 2012-2013).
Workshops and ICT trainings were conducted to teach-
ers by the M-CART project team, hence the implementation
of another strategy- the TQC (Teacher`s Quality Circle), which
paved the way to peer collaboration and peer mentoring.
To address the call for teachers to collaborate and share
the most effective strategies they see with their colleagues,
the different subject areas of NNHS have come up with very
promising TQC projects.
The English Department has their Dare to Excel Program
and the BASA PASA Seminar Workshops for Teachers. Math
Department has come up with the Double Exposure teaching
scheme and The Peer Teaching among Mathematics teach-
ers. Filipino Department has their own version of Halinang
Magbasa. Science Department has M-CART Teaching and En-
hancement Program. Values Education –SLARS (Save Lives Of
At Risks Students); TLE- Angat Sarap Navotas and their Live-
liood Entreprenneurship and MAPEH Department has come
up with Wellness Program.

Reading took a central
focus in Navotas National
High School as teachers in all
subject areas participated in
a teach-in seminar dubbed
as “BASA-PASA Whole-

Instruction.” Spearheaded
by the English department,
the activity was conducted
in two separate dates:
November 29, 2012 and
January 04, 2013.
The seminar/workshop
sought to help subject area
teachers in developing the
reading competencies of
students by giving them
training on the teaching
of reading in the content
areas. A well prepared and
highly informative lecture
presentation was delivered
by Mr. Marco D. Meduranda,
a 2nd year English teacher
who has taken reading
education units in his
graduate studies in UP
Diliman. The speaker tackled
the need for a whole-school
approach – one where all
school stakeholders are
taking an active role, to
address the learning gaps
of students especially in
reading.
“The teaching of
reading is now a shared
responsibility of all teachers.
This premise does not mean
that content teachers should
become reading teachers;
rather, content teachers
can structure lessons to
assist struggling readers,
boosting them to proficient
performance when reading
content-based material,” Mr.
Meduranda underscored.

Internet Access:
Danger to Students?
by Eugenio R. Letada III

Students greatly familiarized the term “Internet”. Nowadays, internet
is becoming a requirement of students. Browsing your net can answer your
academic and professional needs. Based on the “Study on internet access
and use by Filipino school children” by the Asian Institute of Journalism
and Communication, almost three-fourths or 74 percent of Filipino School
children have access to the internet.
The Internet is the largest set of computer networks that use the
Internet Protocol. The invention and development of the Internet was the
biggest discovery by mankind in the 20th century that led to a revolution.
Today, the Internet is used by more than 50% of the world population as its
applications are found in nearly every fields of life: be it communication,
knowledge, news, shopping, marketing, entertainment, education, etc. So
how exactly does the Internet technology benefit students for education?
Let us take a look at it in detail. (Pandit, 2010)
According to the AIJC study, the high level of computer illiteracy should
be a priority concern since “competitiveness” and “survival” of children in
today’s Knowledge Society is greatly dependent on digital literacy. Access
and appropriate use of the Internet can provide children a good head start in
child development especially if they are exposed to child-friendly websites.
The Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication states that
greater capability of schoolchildren to upload anddownload materials
enhances self-expression and creativity, enables them to link withothers
who share the same interests, and therefore widens opportunities for
sharing andnetworking. Filipino children are no longer just consumers but
producers as well – nowreferred to as “prosumers.”
Internet nowadays is becoming an educational tool for students.
Answering assignments as fast as possible and creating projects as easy as
one, two, and three. Students have more recreational and social activities
than that of learning. Computers can be accessible for just Php 15.00 or Php
20.00 per hour.
Since the Internet can create free access to all kinds of websites,
students are more prone to information they are not supposed to read.
Nowadays there are thousands of pornographic sites which can be easily
found by the students on the internet. These sites are very harmful to the
students which may incite some of sexual things to one another. According
to the study of researcher Dr. Jennings Bryant about 600 American males
and females of junior high school age and above, 31 percent of the males
and 18 percent of the females admitted actually doing some of the things
they have seen in the pornography. Moreover, a recent study has shown
that frequent exposure to pornography may cause the children to involve in
sexual illness, sexual addiction and unplanned pregnancies, which have bad
influences on the children’s mental life.
Violent games from the internet can cause effects on the students.
The AIJC study observed that many of the favourite online games involve
“violence”.While playing online games contributes to visual-spatial skills,
some psychologicalresearches confirm that violent games can increase
children’s aggression.
Lastly from the access of students through social sites, many students
are prone from cyber bullying. An internet website for kid`s health states
that cyber bullying victims can lead to greater risk for anxiety, depression,
and other stress-related disorders. In some rare but highly publicized cases,
some kids have turned to suicide.
With these, we find that the importance of Internet in education cannot
be hidden and hence, every student should be given access to the Internet
for upliftment of education standards. However, lots and lots of information
can be termed as advantageous or disadvantageous.
The government must impose a law regarding the negative influences
brought by internet access in our society. While the government hasn`t taken
actions for this “social threat”, the parents must guide and keep watch on
their sons and daughters from abused internet access. Also to the students,
theybe aware and protect themselves through unwanted and unethical
information that comes from the internet.
Bullying: a New Perspective
By: John Matthew D. Zarate
Everyone had grown to it, had experienced it, either directly or
indirectly, it is called bullying. It includes verbal harassment, physical
assault and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims,
perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability.
In the United States, more than 13 million children had been
bullied last year. Bullying cases in the Philippines are not usually
reported so there are no figures on how many have been victimized
in public and private schools.
Meaning that there is no particular research on the manner
but Jesuit Basic Education Commission (JBEC) believed that bullying
exists in the country. A school tradition you might say to be a bully
and to be bullied. But who is to be blamed by this action? Evidently,
only by this time people take these matters seriously. For some had
believed that it is a part of life. If no one is physically hurt, they will
say, what's the big deal? It's just children being children. But these
people are wrong; let us make ourselves clear that bullying must not
be tolerated and must be stopped before it’s too late.
Steve Kingsbury, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, claimed
that a fear of bullies often leads us to blame them for their
actions, and thereby exclude the idea that anything could be done
to change their behaviour. Kingsbury argued that rather than
blaming individuals, we should pay more attention to the roles that
communities can play in either condoning or combating bullying.
According to a study (O’Connell et al, 1999), in half the instances
of school bullying an audience gathered to watch, and in a quarter
the bully was actually joined by one of the onlookers. The victim
was supported in only a quarter of instances. Kingsbury concluded
his argument by suggesting that fear and blame of individuals is
unhelpful. Instead, we should attempt to understand the role that
communities play in the development of bullying, and pity the bully.
Bullying is linked strongly to aggression and frustration, and
children who are depressed or challenged with attention problems
can have difficulties socializing in school.
Students spend most of their time in school where they socialize
and where their character, ethics and ways of communication take
place and develop.
Bearinmind,thatwe,everyoneinoursociety,inourcommunity
are the root and the solution to this problem. We should not let this
imbalanced child suffer and involve others in his predicament.

Excited in anticipation, I could
hear my heart pounding as I eagerly
waited to meet the new “chief” of all
schools in Navotas. That day, I was
the emcee of a regional gathering
of all Education Supervisors in
Mathematics. My script was ready,
and I was mentally prepared to take
charge of the program, but I couldn’t
keep the tremor in my knees. Then,
she came. Her smile as she greeted
the people in the venue brought a
calming effect to me. That moment,
I felt her striking modesty and
gracious spirit.
Her name was Dr. Loreta
Buensuceso Torrecampo, CESO VI. Dr.
Magdalena Araez, the Mathematics
Education Supervisor in our division,
told me that she wanted a simple
introduction. Before introducing her
for the keynote message, I thought
of relating an inspiring quote
from Vincent Lombardi that could
perhaps embody her being a leader.
I said, "Leaders are made, they are
not born. They are made by hard
effort, which is the price all of us
must pay to achieve any goal that is
worthwhile. A big hand to the person
at the helm of the Division of City
Schools Navotas…” She rose, walked
towards me, held the microphone
and before addressing the more
important people in the venue, said
thank you to me. That just took two
or three seconds but those words of
appreciation warmed my spirit.
Then, she delivered her
message. The point of her speech
was clear and concise. She stated her
unwavering desire and commitment
to uplift the quality of education in
Navotas City, stressing that she will

Aboitiz donates LCD Projectors and Speakers
NNHS received five LCD
projectors and five mobile
speakers from the Aboitiz
Foundation, Inc. last January
2013. As a social development
arm, Aboitiz Foundation ad-
dresses social and economic
development needs of less
privileged communities, par-
ticularly those in areas where
Aboitiz companies operate. It
develops and implements pro-
jects on education, enterprise
development, primary health
and child care, corporate do-
nations, and environment.
The turn-over ceremony
was headed by Mr. Edmundo
B. Ang, VP for operations,
Therma Mobile Inc. In his
message he stressed out the
significance of the project
and its objectives and
presented other programs
of the organization which
seek to uplift the standards
of education to some public
schools all over the Philippines
for them to be able to
cope with the fast pace of
technology. He also led the
signing of Memorandum of
Agreement (MOA), together
with NNHS principal, Dr. Maria
Cristina A. Robles, and Mayor
John Rey M. Tiangco.
Mr. Jose Venancio
Batiquin, Chief Operating
Officer of Therma Mobile,
commended NNHS principal
Dr. Maria Cristina A. Robles
with the implementation of
Project M-CART despite the
lack of technology and the
limited number of working
computer units of the school.
Earlier, the foundation
had donated ten LCD
computers to our school
last March 22, 2012. The
computer turn-over ceremony
last March was headed by
the Foundation’s Executive
Vice President and Managing
Trustee, EVP Augusto P.I.
Carpio III and Mr. Jose
Venancio Batiquin. Also in
attendance were Mr. Auurelio
G. Alfonso, Education Program
Supervisor for TLE and Mayor
John Rey M. Tiangco who was
the event`s keynote speaker.
Related to this, NNHS
also received two computer
units from the schools’ alumni
batch graduates S.Y. 1991-
1992 and S.Y. 1993-1994.
Today, NNHS has a total of
23 computer units acquired
thru the generosity of Aboitiz
Foundation, Inc., NGOs, LGUs
and other stakeholders.

do all that she can with all that she
has to improve the achievement level
of students in the division. I felt her
sincerity. I knew she meant business.
At 45 years old, Dr. Torrecampo’s
rise to the ladder of the educational
system is noteworthy. Prior to
her appointment in Navotas,
she served the city of Las Piñas
for about twenty years. From a
simple elementary school teacher
in 1992, Dr. Torrecampo’s hard
work, excellence and dedication to
service resulted to her promotion as
school administrator. She became a
principal of Pamplona Elementary
School in 2002, and a year after she
became an education supervisor
of Values Education. In 2008, she
was designated as OIC – Assistant
and became full-fledged Assistant
Schools Division Superintendent
of Las Piñas City in 2009. The
retirement of Dr. Nenita S. Rivera in
2012 paved way for her designation
at first as Officer-in-Charge and then
this year, 2013, as a full-fledged
Schools Division Superintendent of
the Division of Navotas City.
Her colleagues in the division
would describe her as very
approachable, understanding and
result-oriented. She is very hard-
working too. In fact, in order to foster
betterteachingandlearningsituation
to all schools in the division especially
this time when DepEd is rolling the K
to 12 education program, she has
bolstered demonstration teaching as
a means to better prepare teachers
to meet the challenges of the new
curriculum. She has been very visible
in almost all schools in the division
personally attending and witnessing
EuphrosyneChemaphy, Christine
Jeremiah and Christian Joel Jr. She
said that despite her busy schedule
she never fails to provide her kids
with motherly support in all aspects.
She is very happy to recount that her
kids have grown to be God-fearing
and responsible individuals.
With all these Herculean tasks
to raise the quality of education in
the division and still be a mother and
wife for her family, one would ask:
Where does Dr. Loreta Torrecampo
draw strength and inspiration?
“Sabuhayko, ang Panginoonlang ang
gumagabaysa akin,” she affirmed.
Her modesty, humility and courage
as a leader are rooted on her
Christian faith. She further claimed,
“I always do the best for the glory of
God.”This is a simple but profound
statement that if we, educators,
would constantly repeat in our minds
could surely create a positive effect in
our everyday actions.
Leaders affect the people
around them. A smile from a superior
can warm a subordinate’s soul.
Words of appreciation can empower
a frail spirit. From the very first
moment I met Dr. Torrecampo, I felt
her sincerity to make a difference.
Her humility, simplicity and
determination are truly marks of a
transformative leader. Though she is
just starting her work in the division, I
believe she will surely succeed because
she is doing it for the glory of God.

the demo teaching of teachers and
giving constructive feedback and
inspirational message to every
educators in attendance.
In an interview with her by
the senior students of Navotas
National High School, she shared her
plans and on-going projects. She is
working to create more schools in
the division that caters to advance
and scientifically inclined students.
According to her, Bagumbayan
Elementary School will soon adopt
science oriented curriculum while
in the secondary level, Navotas
National High School will temporarily
host this coming school year 2013-
2014 the first batch of Special
Science Class students. They will
soon be transferred to a new school
which will be called Navotas Science
High School. She also shared the on-
going transformation of San Rafael
National High School to San Rafael
Technological School. Truly, these
reforms will bring bright prospects
to the future of the BatangNavoteño.
On a lighter and more personal
level, in that same interview, Dr.
Torrecampo intimated that she is a
very caring and loving mother and
wife. However, she lightly recalled
that when she was in college, she
planned to be a nun since she was a
devoted member of the university’s
Marian Youth Movement. Certainly,
God has more beautiful plans. On
April 1994, at the age of 26, she
married Dr. Joel Torrecampo who
is also an accomplished educator
currently working as Education
Supervisor of Mathematics in
Parañaque City. They were blessed to
have three children namely Christine

My Favorite Jacket
by Merlyn Furo
Standing here beside my love
As we watch raindrops fall from above.
It’s a cold rainy December night
But you held me in your arms so tight.
You look at me with sincerity
While your hands fit mine perfectly.
As if they’re made for each one
The space I have for the best man.
You start to say those words softly
And slowly holding my heart tightly.
As if it’s you that is really meant
That’s why you and I have met.
Your embrace that is so warm
I am sure with you there’s no harm.
I love your hug that’s give me love
My favorite jacket the arms you have.
You and I … Again
by Merlyn Furo
Here we are staring at the sky
You give me feeling of wanting to fly.
I feel your hands fitted with mine
As we watch the blue moonlight shine.
As we sit in this cold green field
With your arms around I got shield.
From the times that we’ve taken to let go
From the pains that made both of us low.
Now we can say our past have passed
It’s a new beginning we’re having to last.
After trying to forget what’s us back then
It’s nice to see You and I together again.
My Four Friends
By Chris Justine Arquilita
Four Years, I spend here in school
I have met Four girls, not quite cool
Not like those who cause much trouble
Four girls that made my life jumble
True friends unlike leaves everywhere
But a diamond precious, rare
Like a four leaf clover, one of a kind
Lucky to have but hard to find
I thank God for giving me four
Although I beg one to live for
And nothing I can ask for more
Loving these Girls once and for all
CONNECTED
by Edlie Joshua Vargas and James Edillo
Knowing You, gave me a clue,
That we might be stuck by glue,
Feeling cold? Feeling blue?
That's just a sign of me Missing You.
We cannot say knowing ourselves are steps of Fate,
I can recall the things happened through the gate,
Whispering slowly as I Heard words create:
"I'll Never Leave You" - Oppa said.
We're Brothers not in Blood.
But in Heart that full of Love.
I'm not a Hero my Little Bro.
But I'm a Brother, that will never let you go.
Being with you Let me thrilled,
Happiness and Joy had me filled,
To You, My Brother I owe you much,
Thanks to You it's not the Last.
Getting to know you might be so fast,
I know that things ain't meant to last,
My feelings inside might let me blast,
This I tell You, I'll Make it fast: "Enjoy life - This is a Must"
Being a Friend, Being a Brother,
You Ain't less and not no other,
Jetpacks
By Edlie Joshua Vargas
Every Person, Every Being,
Has his own yearning
to be on Top, to be acclaimed,
And stop the cause of their own bleeding.
But certainly man cannot live alone,
He has his company of his own,
A company which makes him strong,
And are so called "Jetpacks"
that carries him away through the song.
Surely, People has his own and indefinite ways,
He thinks a lot and avoid mistakes,
But for a Certain event called "Fate"
They encounter others which causes them to CHANGE.
Eventhough man is described to be a book,
We we're once Naked and Nude,
We cannot decide our own page,
Nor where to go between the two gates.
Knowing God, and preaching for His Name,
May be Odd and be like Insane,
But all I Know is a certain thing:
"If you follow Him and turn from your ways,
All shall be added unto you and You will be saved."
Indeed "Jetpacks" are used by us human beings,
To be lifted high in the air where we breathe in.
Let us not Neglect the World, God has let us Live in.
For its a Matter of time before all of us could forget
the "Jetpacks" whom helped us be here.
Just a Smile
By Catherine Borja
Just a smile can bring you near to me
Your smile receiver is all I want to be
I asked myself if I will ever see,
See you when you’re smiling back at me.
Your smile can change many things,
When there’s sadness, happiness it brings.
Just a smile and the sparks suddenly fly,
End of my miseries and battle cries.
When there are times that I’m waiting in vain,
And had no one else but myself to blame,
You hold me tight and never let me go,
You just smile and rainbow starts to show.
Enchanted words and fairytales I want to find,
In your smile, there’s such places I can’t hide,
So now for me, there’s just one thing to do,
I thank the almighty Lord,
‘coz I found someone like you.
Just a smile can make the river smoothly flow,
With your smile the wind can gently blow.
There can be a big change for a while,
It happens even if you bring is just a smile.
My Bestfriend
byLouella Marie D. Ladaran
In everyday that I live
My beloved bestfriend is always there
Always there to help in times of adversity
When I was frustrated in sadness,
Just call her and she’ll be there
To listen and to comfort you.
A person who always understands you,
A person who can lean on,
A person who will never ever leave your side.
No matter what
For most ups and downs
She’ll always be there
That’s why I’m not going to interchange
in any title and wealth,
I want my one of a kind bestfriend
Till the end of time.
Love Empowers Beauty
By Amor Advincula
It’s been a long time since we first met
Meeting someone like you, all was set
You just captured my heart, like a camera
I never think that was like scripted cinema
Being a child is no more
Since I met you before
On that very first day
There’s no word I could say
Is it love that I’m feeling?
Or is it just that I’m dreaming?
You’re not only that pretty,
But a man with strong personality
I realized something unexplainable
Passionate love continues to fall
Can’t fight this unforeseen feeling
The best appetizer I am eating
But one thing made my nature ruined
Knowing your core has got what it needs
I felt weedy as the days passed
But still, my affection for you will last
I made myself busy
Without thinking of you daily
I persevered to be on top
Trying for this madness to stop
But I can’t fight this feeling
My heart keeps on you calling
If only I could take my heart away
To escape feeling the same way
Now the miles stretched out behind me
I can’t take you from my mind this easy
And in time I know that we’ll both see
I’m the one for you and you’re the one for me
I believe God has the best design
Just wait for that right time
For now, live to the fullest
Someday, we will pass His test
Embosom our missions
Set aside each other’s affection
Love has no boundary
Especially if love empowers beauty

Zarate, IV-EC once again, emerged champion in the National Science Quest, organized by ASEP (Association of Sci- ence Educators in the Phil- ippines), held at Teachers’ Camp, Baguio City last Feb- ruary 8-10, 2013. Zarate outsmarted sev- eral participants from dif- ferent secondary schools in the Philippines. With his SIP entitled “Carboxymethyl Cellulose: A Biodegradable Board for E-Circuits, Zarate won in the Science Investiga- tory Project (SIP), Cluster 1, Individual Applied Category. This was the same SIP he defended in the NCR-SIP tilt. Mrs. Elizabeth S. Joseph, NNHS Science Teacher, was his coach/adviser. The study focused on the feasibility of Nata de Coco as a raw material in the production of electronic circuit boards. It showed a promising solution to the current standing of the country and the world itself as its continuous produc- tion of waste, and also one way to boost the Philippines’ economy. The study proved that it will produce a board for circuit that has high en- durance, has flexibility and several unique qualities from our electronic cards nowa- days. These cheaper boards are biodegradable as well as eco-friendly. This project simply wanted to discover feasibility of waste material producing utility equipment in the field of electronics. The event was attended by superintendents, supervi- sors, principals and depart- ment heads from different secondary schools nation- wide. • 4. TQC Teachers’ Quality Circle Collaborative teaching The conception of Project M-CART has made teaching learning more engaging and enjoyable for students in Navo- tas National High school. The simple but innovative teaching practice initiated by a few teachers has become a school- based strategy and an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) de- signed to decongest extra-large classes of 70-80 students per class. It was made the main teaching tool in adoption and implementation of M-ISOS (Modified-In School/ Out-School Scheme in NNHS for SY 2012-2013). Workshops and ICT trainings were conducted to teach- ers by the M-CART project team, hence the implementation of another strategy- the TQC (Teacher`s Quality Circle), which paved the way to peer collaboration and peer mentoring. To address the call for teachers to collaborate and share the most effective strategies they see with their colleagues, the different subject areas of NNHS have come up with very promising TQC projects. The English Department has their Dare to Excel Program and the BASA PASA Seminar Workshops for Teachers. Math Department has come up with the Double Exposure teaching scheme and The Peer Teaching among Mathematics teach- ers. Filipino Department has their own version of Halinang Magbasa. Science Department has M-CART Teaching and En- hancement Program. Chris Justine Arquilita Hazel Anne Espartinas John Carlo Santos Reading took a central focus in Navotas National High School as teachers in all subject areas participated in a teach-in seminar dubbed as “BASA-PASA Whole- School Approach to Reading Instruction.” Spearheaded by the English department, the activity was conducted in two separate dates: November 29, 2012 and January 04, 2013. The seminar/workshop sought to help subject area teachers in developing the reading competencies of students by giving them training on the teaching of reading in the content areas. A well prepared and highly informative lecture presentation was delivered by Mr. Marco D. Meduranda, a 2nd year English teacher who has taken reading education units in his graduate studies in UP Diliman. The speaker tackled the need for a whole-school approach – one where all school stakeholders are taking an active role, to address the learning gaps of students especially in reading. “The teaching of reading is now a shared responsibility of all teachers. This premise does not mean that content teachers should become reading teachers; rather, content teachers can structure lessons to assist struggling readers, boosting them to proficient performance when reading content-based material,” Mr. Meduranda underscored. This seminar paved the wayfortheconceptualization of an activity of the school dubbed “Reading Literacy Program: A Whole School Approach” for school year 2013-2014 - MDM
  • 5. 5 editorial Internet Access: Danger to Students? by Eugenio R. Letada III Students greatly familiarized the term “Internet”. Nowadays, internet is becoming a requirement of students. Browsing your net can answer your academic and professional needs. Based on the “Study on internet access and use by Filipino school children” by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, almost three-fourths or 74 percent of Filipino School children have access to the internet. The Internet is the largest set of computer networks that use the Internet Protocol. The invention and development of the Internet was the biggest discovery by mankind in the 20th century that led to a revolution. Today, the Internet is used by more than 50% of the world population as its applications are found in nearly every fields of life: be it communication, knowledge, news, shopping, marketing, entertainment, education, etc. So how exactly does the Internet technology benefit students for education? Let us take a look at it in detail. (Pandit, 2010) According to the AIJC study, the high level of computer illiteracy should be a priority concern since “competitiveness” and “survival” of children in today’s Knowledge Society is greatly dependent on digital literacy. Access and appropriate use of the Internet can provide children a good head start in child development especially if they are exposed to child-friendly websites. The Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication states that greater capability of schoolchildren to upload anddownload materials enhances self-expression and creativity, enables them to link withothers who share the same interests, and therefore widens opportunities for sharing andnetworking. Filipino children are no longer just consumers but producers as well – nowreferred to as “prosumers.” Internet nowadays is becoming an educational tool for students. Answering assignments as fast as possible and creating projects as easy as one, two, and three. Students have more recreational and social activities than that of learning. Computers can be accessible for just Php 15.00 or Php 20.00 per hour. Since the Internet can create free access to all kinds of websites, students are more prone to information they are not supposed to read. Nowadays there are thousands of pornographic sites which can be easily found by the students on the internet. These sites are very harmful to the students which may incite some of sexual things to one another. According to the study of researcher Dr. Jennings Bryant about 600 American males and females of junior high school age and above, 31 percent of the males and 18 percent of the females admitted actually doing some of the things they have seen in the pornography. Moreover, a recent study has shown that frequent exposure to pornography may cause the children to involve in sexual illness, sexual addiction and unplanned pregnancies, which have bad influences on the children’s mental life. Violent games from the internet can cause effects on the students. The AIJC study observed that many of the favourite online games involve “violence”.While playing online games contributes to visual-spatial skills, some psychologicalresearches confirm that violent games can increase children’s aggression. Lastly from the access of students through social sites, many students are prone from cyber bullying. An internet website for kid`s health states that cyber bullying victims can lead to greater risk for anxiety, depression, and other stress-related disorders. In some rare but highly publicized cases, some kids have turned to suicide. With these, we find that the importance of Internet in education cannot be hidden and hence, every student should be given access to the Internet for upliftment of education standards. However, lots and lots of information can be termed as advantageous or disadvantageous. The government must impose a law regarding the negative influences brought by internet access in our society. While the government hasn`t taken actions for this “social threat”, the parents must guide and keep watch on their sons and daughters from abused internet access. Also to the students, theybe aware and protect themselves through unwanted and unethical information that comes from the internet. Bullying: a New Perspective By: John Matthew D. Zarate Everyone had grown to it, had experienced it, either directly or indirectly, it is called bullying. It includes verbal harassment, physical assault and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. In the United States, more than 13 million children had been bullied last year. Bullying cases in the Philippines are not usually reported so there are no figures on how many have been victimized in public and private schools. Meaning that there is no particular research on the manner but Jesuit Basic Education Commission (JBEC) believed that bullying exists in the country. A school tradition you might say to be a bully and to be bullied. But who is to be blamed by this action? Evidently, only by this time people take these matters seriously. For some had believed that it is a part of life. If no one is physically hurt, they will say, what's the big deal? It's just children being children. But these people are wrong; let us make ourselves clear that bullying must not be tolerated and must be stopped before it’s too late. Steve Kingsbury, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, claimed that a fear of bullies often leads us to blame them for their actions, and thereby exclude the idea that anything could be done to change their behaviour. Kingsbury argued that rather than blaming individuals, we should pay more attention to the roles that communities can play in either condoning or combating bullying. According to a study (O’Connell et al, 1999), in half the instances of school bullying an audience gathered to watch, and in a quarter the bully was actually joined by one of the onlookers. The victim was supported in only a quarter of instances. Kingsbury concluded his argument by suggesting that fear and blame of individuals is unhelpful. Instead, we should attempt to understand the role that communities play in the development of bullying, and pity the bully. Bullying is linked strongly to aggression and frustration, and children who are depressed or challenged with attention problems can have difficulties socializing in school. Students spend most of their time in school where they socialize and where their character, ethics and ways of communication take place and develop. Bearinmind, thatwe, everyoneinoursociety, inourcommunity are the root and the solution to this problem. We should not let this imbalanced child suffer and involve others in his predicament.
  • 6. feature 6 Excited in anticipation, I could hear my heart pounding as I eagerly waited to meet the new “chief” of all schools in Navotas. That day, I was the emcee of a regional gathering of all Education Supervisors in Mathematics. My script was ready, and I was mentally prepared to take charge of the program, but I couldn’t keep the tremor in my knees. Then, she came. Her smile as she greeted the people in the venue brought a calming effect to me. That moment, I felt her striking modesty and gracious spirit. Her name was Dr. Loreta Buensuceso Torrecampo, CESO VI. Dr. Magdalena Araez, the Mathematics Education Supervisor in our division, told me that she wanted a simple introduction. Before introducing her for the keynote message, I thought of relating an inspiring quote from Vincent Lombardi that could perhaps embody her being a leader. I said, "Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile. A big hand to the person at the helm of the Division of City Schools Navotas…” She rose, walked towards me, held the microphone and before addressing the more important people in the venue, said thank you to me. That just took two or three seconds but those words of appreciation warmed my spirit. Then, she delivered her message. The point of her speech was clear and concise. Eugenio Letada, III Anthony Malonzo do all that she can with all that she has to improve the achievement level of students in the division. I felt her sincerity. I knew she meant business. At 45 years old, Dr. Torrecampo’s rise to the ladder of the educational system is noteworthy. Prior to her appointment in Navotas, she served the city of Las Piñas for about twenty years. From a simple elementary school teacher in 1992, Dr. Torrecampo’s hard work, excellence and dedication to service resulted to her promotion as school administrator. She became a principal of Pamplona Elementary School in 2002, and a year after she became an education supervisor of Values Education. In 2008, she was designated as OIC – Assistant and became full-fledged Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Las Piñas City in 2009. The retirement of Dr. Nenita S. Rivera in 2012 paved way for her designation at first as Officer-in-Charge and then this year, 2013, as a full-fledged Schools Division Superintendent of the Division of Navotas City. Her colleagues in the division would describe her as very approachable, understanding and result-oriented. She is very hard- working too. In fact, in order to foster betterteachingandlearningsituation to all schools in the division especially this time when DepEd is rolling the K to 12 education program, she has bolstered demonstration teaching as a means to better prepare teachers to meet the challenges of the new curriculum. She has been very visible in almost all schools in the division personally attending and witnessing EuphrosyneChemaphy, Christine Jeremiah and Christian Joel Jr. She said that despite her busy schedule she never fails to provide her kids with motherly support in all aspects. She is very happy to recount that her kids have grown to be God-fearing and responsible individuals. With all these Herculean tasks to raise the quality of education in the division and still be a mother and wife for her family, one would ask: Where does Dr. Loreta Torrecampo draw strength and inspiration? “Sabuhayko, ang Panginoonlang ang gumagabaysa akin,” she affirmed. Her modesty, humility and courage as a leader are rooted on her Christian faith. She further claimed, “I always do the best for the glory of God.”This is a simple but profound statement that if we, educators, would constantly repeat in our minds could surely create a positive effect in our everyday actions. Leaders affect the people around them. A smile from a superior can warm a subordinate’s soul. Words of appreciation can empower a frail spirit. From the very first moment I met Dr. Torrecampo, I felt her sincerity to make a difference. Her humility, simplicity and determination are truly marks of a transformative leader. Though she is just starting her work in the division, I believe she will surely succeed because she is doing it for the glory of God. Dr. Loreta B. Torrecampo: Doing the Best for the Glory of God by Mr. Marco D. Meduranda the demo teaching of teachers and giving constructive feedback and inspirational message to every educators in attendance. In an interview with her by the senior students of Navotas National High School, she shared her plans and on-going projects. She is working to create more schools in the division that caters to advance and scientifically inclined students. According to her, Bagumbayan Elementary School will soon adopt science oriented curriculum while in the secondary level, Navotas National High School will temporarily host this coming school year 2013- 2014 the first batch of Special Science Class students. They will soon be transferred to a new school which will be called Navotas Science High School. She also shared the on- going transformation of San Rafael National High School to San Rafael Technological School. Truly, these reforms will bring bright prospects to the future of the BatangNavoteño. On a lighter and more personal level, in that same interview, Dr. Torrecampo intimated that she is a very caring and loving mother and wife. However, she lightly recalled that when she was in college, she planned to be a nun since she was a devoted member of the university’s Marian Youth Movement. Certainly, God has more beautiful plans. On April 1994, at the age of 26, she married Dr. Joel Torrecampo who is also an accomplished educator currently working as Education Supervisor of Mathematics in Parañaque City. They were blessed to have three children namely Christine

You look at me with sincerity While your hands fit mine perfectly. As if they’re made for each one The space I have for the best man. You start to say those words softly And slowly holding my heart tightly. As if it’s you that is really meant That’s why you and I have met. Your embrace that is so warm I am sure with you there’s no harm. I love your hug that’s give me love My favorite jacket the arms you have. You and I … Again by Merlyn Furo Here we are staring at the sky You give me feeling of wanting to fly. I feel your hands fitted with mine As we watch the blue moonlight shine. As we sit in this cold green field With your arms around I got shield. From the times that we’ve taken to let go From the pains that made both of us low. Now we can say our past have passed It’s a new beginning we’re having to last. After trying to forget what’s us back then It’s nice to see You and I together again. My Four Friends By Chris Justine Arquilita Four Years, I spend here in school I have met Four girls, not quite cool Not like those who cause much trouble Four girls that made my life jumble True friends unlike leaves everywhere But a diamond precious, rare Like a four leaf clover, one of a kind Lucky to have but hard to find I thank God for giving me four Although I beg one to live for And nothing I can ask for more Loving these Girls once and for all CONNECTED by Edlie Joshua Vargas and James Edillo Knowing You, gave me a clue, That we might be stuck by glue, Feeling cold? Feeling blue? That's just a sign of me Missing You. We cannot say knowing ourselves are steps of Fate, I can recall the things happened through the gate, Whispering slowly as I Heard words create: "I'll Never Leave You" - Oppa said. We're Brothers not in Blood. But in Heart that full of Love. I'm not a Hero my Little Bro. But I'm a Brother, that will never let you go. Being with you Let me thrilled, Happiness and Joy had me filled, To You, My Brother I owe you much, Thanks to You it's not the Last. Getting to know you might be so fast, I know that things ain't meant to last, My feelings inside might let me blast, This I tell You, I'll Make it fast: "Enjoy life - This is a Must" Being a Friend, Being a Brother, You Ain't less and not no other, Jetpacks By Edlie Joshua Vargas Every Person, Every Being, Has his own yearning to be on Top, to be acclaimed, And stop the cause of their own bleeding. But certainly man cannot live alone, He has his company of his own, A company which makes him strong, And are so called "Jetpacks" that carries him away through the song. Surely, People has his own and indefinite ways, He thinks a lot and avoid mistakes, But for a Certain event called "Fate" They encounter others which causes them to CHANGE. Eventhough man is described to be a book, We we're once Naked and Nude, We cannot decide our own page, Nor where to go between the two gates. Knowing God, and preaching for His Name, May be Odd and be like Insane, But all I Know is a certain thing: "If you follow Him and turn from your ways, All shall be added unto you and You will be saved." Indeed "Jetpacks" are used by us human beings, To be lifted high in the air where we breathe in. Let us not Neglect the World, God has let us Live in. For its a Matter of time before all of us could forget the "Jetpacks" whom helped us be here.
