THE EFFECT OF PLAYING
MOBILE LEGENDS TO THE
CRITICAL THINKING OF THE
STUDENTS

RATIONALE/BACKGROUND
This review of related literature examines the impact of
mobile legends, a popular mobile game, on students' critical
thinking skills. Incorporating studies from global, local, and
contextual perspectives, it explores the broader effects of video
games on cognition and aggression, establishes the cognitive
benefits of gaming, and investigates the specific influence of
mobile legends on critical thinking abilities. The studies provide
insights into the potential impact within different contexts,
including community and school settings, and consider cultural and
educational factors. Collectively, they contribute to our
understanding of how mobile legends may affect students' critical
thinking skills.
SUMMARY
The research problem aims to investigate the effects of playing
mobile legends on students' critical thinking. Three hypotheses are
proposed: the effects of playing mobile legends may vary, mobile legends
has an impact on students' critical thinking, and specific components or
features of mobile legends can either promote or hinder critical thinking
development. The research design utilizes a qualitative approach,
specifically the narrative method, and purposive sampling is employed to
select the sample from the population. The study is conducted among grade
11 students at coron school of fisheries in barangay 1, coron, palawan,
from march to june 2023. Data gathering involves using an interview guide
questionnaire with 30 questions. The researchers obtain necessary
permissions from the school authorities and participants, ensuring
confidentiality. The collected data is analyzed and interpreted using
conceptual analysis to understand the effect of playing mobile legends on
students' critical thinking.
• FINDINGS
•
The following are the major findings of the study:
1.The responses from the table indicate that playing mobile
legends can have both positive and negative effects on students'
critical thinking skills. On the positive side, the game
encourages strategic thinking, problem-solving, and the
development of thinking strategies. It also promotes teamwork
and the ability to formulate strategies to achieve victory.
However, there are also negative effects observed, including a
decreased focus on academic responsibilities and a potential
hindrance to completing homework. The frequency and duration of
gameplay were seen to impact critical thinking abilities, with
excessive playtime potentially affecting cognitive functions.
Furthermore, there were differences in the effects based on age,
gender, and academic level.
• 2. The results indicate that moderate frequency and
duration of gameplay, specifically around 1 to 2
hours, are considered optimal for promoting critical
thinking skills. Engaging in extended periods of
gameplay has both positive and negative effects, such
as increased happiness but also feelings of anger and
a tendency to forget homework assignments. Playing
mobile legends has shown the potential to enhance
cognitive abilities associated with critical thinking,
including memory, attention, and processing speed.
3. The findings suggest that Mobile Legends
possesses elements that can foster critical
thinking skills among students. The game's emphasis
on battle strategy, decision-making, and
communication requires players to think critically,
make informed choices, and collaborate effectively
with others. Many respondents view Mobile Legends
as a valuable tool for educational purposes and
highlight its potential to promote critical
thinking skills that are applicable in academic
settings.
CONCLUSIONS
Considering the findings of the study, the following
Are the conclusions:
1. In conclusion, playing mobile legends can influence
students' critical thinking skills. While the game
offers opportunities for strategic thinking and
problem-solving, excessive gameplay and lack of
balance may have detrimental effects on academic
performance and cognitive abilities. The findings
emphasize the need for a balanced approach to gaming
and the importance of setting limits on playtime.
2. In general, Mobile Legends can contribute to
the development of critical thinking skills by
providing a stimulating and immersive
experience. However, there is also downsides of
playing ML in critical thinking.
3. Mobile Legends has specific components
and features that can potentially enhance
critical thinking skills among students.
The game's design encourages players to
think critically about their decisions,
utilize effective strategies, and engage
in communication. It can be utilized as an
educational tool to develop critical
thinking skills, fostering abilities that
are transferable to academic contexts.
Recommendations
In relation with the findings and conclusions of this
research, the following are recommended:
1.Based on the results, the researchers recommended that educators, parents,
and students themselves be mindful of the amount of time spent playing Mobile
Legends. Creating a healthy balance between gaming and academic
responsibilities is crucial to ensure that students can develop critical
thinking skill that compromising their educational progress. Schools and
educational institutions can consider integrating discussions and awareness
programs that address the potential effects of excessive gaming on critical
thinking and academic performance. To further recommendations, game
developers could explore incorporating features that encourage critical
thinking and cognitive development within the gameplay itself. By promoting
responsible and mindful gaming practices, students can harness the positive
aspects of Mobile Legends while avoiding the potential negative impacts on
their critical thinking abilities and academic success.
2. For the second problem, educators and
parents may consider recognizing the potential
benefits of gaming in fostering critical
thinking and consider incorporating it as part
of a well-balanced learning environment.
However, it is important to also emphasize the
importance of moderation and setting
appropriate time limits to ensure a healthy
balance between gameplay and other aspects of
life.
3. Based on these findings, educators can consider integrating
Mobile Legends into lesson plans to promote critical thinking
skills. They can use the game as an example to educate
students, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking,
teamwork, and effective decision-making. However, it is
important to be aware of the potential negative effects of
Mobile Legends on the development of critical thinking skills,
as mentioned by some respondents. Educators should provide
guidance and establish boundaries to ensure that gameplay is
balanced and does not hinder critical thinking development.
Additionally, exploring different game modes and encouraging
both individual and team-based gameplay can further enhance
critical thinking skills among students.
