Lesson 2: Dental Hygiene Habits
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental caries affectchildren inthe
United States more than any other chronic infectious disease.Untreated dental caries causes pain
and infections that may lead to problems suchas eating,speaking,playing and learning.However,
dental caries are preventable. The combination of dental flossing andtooth brushing skills has the
potential to eliminate dental caries inschool age children.Teaching children about proper oral care
at a young age is an investment in his or her health that will lasta lifetime.In order to help children
protect their teeth, our goal is to provide childrenwith both proper tooth brushing and flossing
techniques.The skillswe provide these childrenwill hopefully impact their childhood and
adulthood.
Objectives
At the endof the session:
· 95% will be able to indicate that brushing is important.
· 80% will knowthat 2 minutes is the recommended brushing time.
· 90% will demonstrate how to floss correctly.
· 100% will demonstrate how to brush correctly.
Time Allotted
30 minutes
Materials Needed
· Clock displaying 2 minutes
· 35 soft bristle tooth brushes
· Egg cartons
· Yarn
· Play Dough
· White Paint (Kid friendly)
· Paper with image of a tooth
· Cups
· Newspaper
· Baby Wipes

Main Points
· Brushing your teeth is important because it helps keepyour mouth clean and germfree.
· Brushing your teeth in circular motions is the best way to cleanyour mouth.

Procedure
1. Preparation: (30 minutes)
Setdesks andchairs prepared for Lecture #1:
 Have the image clock with 2 minutes ready.
 Place signinsheetby front door.
 Setup a “drying” table for paints.
Prepare for the Tooth BrushPainting Activity.
 Place pieces of newspaper on the craft tables.
 Have papers with image of large tooth on it.
 Fill small cups with kidfriendly paint (a centimeter).
 Tooth brushes to use as paint brushes.
 Observational Check List#1
Prepare for Lecture #2:
 Have display of teeth ready.
 Have a piece of floss for demonstration ready.
Prepare for Flossing with Egg Cartons Activity
 Place egg cartons with play dough in between.
 Have strands of yarn precut into 1 foot.

2. Welcome and Introduction: (2-3 minutes)
Program Facilitators will welcome participants into the program and introduce
themselves to their audience members. Remind families that there is a signin
sheetat the front entrance.
**Pass aroundsigninsheetif anyone did not signinas other Facilitators are
being introduced**
 Names (i.e. Hello, my name is Facilitator #1,#2,#3)
 From CSUN (i.e. we are here to discuss oral health)
 Topic of the day: Shortcaption of the objectives (Brushing is
important. You shouldspend 2 minutes brushing,twice a day.
Brushing correctlyhelps cleanyour mouth. Flossing helps getthe
germs inspaces inbetween your teeth.
Facilitators will perform “Round is the Circle,Round is the Game” song to
learnevery child’s name. **(reference lyric ofsong below)
 If any families walk in late, make sure to welcome them and ask for
the child’s name.
 Every introduction of a child, Evaluator MUST add their name onto
Observational Checklist!
**”Roundis the circle,round is the game, round is the circle,what’s YOUR
name” (When saying “YOUR”, point to a childfor them to say their name:
Parents will usuallyassistchildifunable to speak)Repeat song for every child.
If there are more than 10 children,ask for three names at a time before
repeating song.**
Facilitators will then state the groundrules of the intervention.
 Be respectful
 Keep voices low
 Keep hands and feetto yourself/ No hitting
*Facilitators will then ask the students to repeat the directions back to them.*
3. Lecture #1: Importance of Tooth Brushing: (3-4 minutes)
Brushing your teeth is important because it helps keepyour mouth clean and
germfree!
(“Can I see everyone’s smiles?”)
Mommy and daddy shouldhelpbrush! This is sothe children’s mouth is
properly brushed, at leastuntil the child’s fine motor skills kickin.
Mommy and daddy shouldhelpbrush at leastuntil childis 5 years old!
(“Firstmommy’s/daddy’s turn, then baby’s turn”)
In order to keepyour pretty smiles everyone shouldbrush their teeth twice a
day for 2 minutes each time. This is the best way to keepyour mouth healthy.
(Demonstrate clock with the 2 minutes)
Your tooth brush shouldbe moving in circular motions (Circles)across your
teeth. Brushing your teeth in circular motions is the best way to clean your
mouth.
(Demonstrate circular motions in front of your face)
4. Activity #1 Tooth Brush Painting Activity: (7-8 minutes)
Facilitators with now introduce the firstactivity.
Demonstrate the activity:
 Everyone will get one paper with an image of a tooth.
 Everyone will get one tooth brush that will NOT go inyour mouth, but
usedfor painting your tooth.
 Using your brush, dip inside the cup containing paint.
 Paint your tooth with the brush using circular motions.
 When done, place your paper on drying table.
 When bell rings,it’s time to Clean up! Using wipes.
After the demonstration is completed, facilitator #1,#2 and #3 will then place
the supplies onto preplaced newspaper table. Needed for the activity: tooth
imaged papers, tooth brushes and paint.
Facilitator #1 will ask parents assisttheir childwith painting their tooth in
CIRCULAR motions.
During the activity, facilitators will walk around and assist/engage families with
activity. Evaluator will have Observational Check List#1 ready to identify
childrenare demonstrating the proper form of brushing teeth.
Each facilitator will walk around and interactwith families.
Prompting questions eachfacilitator will ask
 If they remember how to brushtheir teeth (Circular motions)
 How long shouldyou brush your teeth? (2 minutes)
 How often are you supposed to brush your teeth? (Twice a day)
**If there are too many children,each facilitator will have their own
Observational Check Listand responsible to meet with families.Observational
Check Lists shouldbe prefilledat the beginning introduction portion**
Facilitators will ring bell after 6-7 minutes.
Assistchildrenwith placing their paintings on the drying table.
Throw away newspapers, usedtooth brushes,and paint cups.
Use wipes for any spills onfloor, on tables, or on parents/children’s hands.
**Facilitators will encourage families to assistwith cleaning up.**
5. Lecture #2 Flossing: (2-3 minutes)
Facilitator#3 will then teach a brief lessononthe importance of flossing and
how to floss.
 Flossing is difficult,but that’s why mommy and daddy are there to
help!
 Parents coulduse the flossing picks for child’s mouth.
**Demonstrate a flossing pick**
 Flossing helps getthe germs out, which are stuck inthe spaces between
our teeth.
The facilitator #3 will demonstrate the steps the proper steps in flossing.
 Loop your index fingers onboth sides of the string,with a nice grip.
 Wedge the string inbetween the teeth.
 Lift up and out of mouth.
6. Flossing with Egg Cartons Activity: (6-7 minutes)
After the lecture is done, facilitator #3,#2 and #1 will place half egg cartons
onto the crafts table with a single strandof yarn per half egg carton
Facilitator #1 with explain the rules ofthe activity.
 Each childwill get their own half egg carton with Play Dough placed.
 Each childwill get their own strandof yarn.
 Each childwill have to getthe Play Dough out of the egg carton using
their yarn. (Encourage parents to assisttheir childusing the loop
method previously lectured.)
 Place Play Dough onto paper plates to prevent mess.
As families are participating in activity, Facilitators will engage with children
and parents and prompting discussions by asking:
 Can you showme how to floss your teeth? (indicating to the egg
carton)
At this time, Evaluator will use Observational Check List#2 and circulate
around, identifying which childhas demonstrated effective flossing.
After 5-6 minutes,Facilitators will ring the clean-up bell, and encourage families to
helpwith cleaning up.
**Optional: Save Play Dough if not completely damaged**
7. Wrap Up: (4-5 minutes)
Facilitators will prompt families with a final discussioncovering main points from
today’s workshop. If families do not remember, simply restate them:
 Brushing your teeth is important, because it helps keepyour mouth
cleanand germfree!
 Brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time is the best
way to keepyour mouth healthy.
 Brushing your teeth incircular motions is the best way to cleanyour
mouth.
 Flossing helps getthe germs out, which are stuck inthe spaces between
our teeth.
Facilitator #2 will ask:
“Raise your hand if you think brushing your teeth is important.”
Evaluator will recordhow many children respond to question using Final
Observational Check List#3.
Facilitator #2 will ask:
“Can you tell me how many minutes you should brushyour teeth?”
Evaluator will recordhow many children responded correctlyusing Final
Observational Check List#3.
Facilitators will thank families for their participation and hand out a prize!

This is the best way to keepyour mouth healthy. (Demonstrate clock with the 2 minutes) Your tooth brush shouldbe moving in circular motions (Circles)across your teeth. Brushing your teeth in circular motions is the best way to clean your mouth. (Demonstrate circular motions in front of your face) 4. Activity #1 Tooth Brush Painting Activity: (7-8 minutes) Facilitators with now introduce the firstactivity. Demonstrate the activity:  Everyone will get one paper with an image of a tooth.  Everyone will get one tooth brush that will NOT go inyour mouth, but usedfor painting your tooth.  Using your brush, dip inside the cup containing paint.  Paint your tooth with the brush using circular motions.  When done, place your paper on drying table.  When bell rings,it’s time to Clean up! Using wipes. After the demonstration is completed, facilitator #1,#2 and #3 will then place the supplies onto preplaced newspaper table. Needed for the activity: tooth imaged papers, tooth brushes and paint. Facilitator #1 will ask parents assisttheir childwith painting their tooth in CIRCULAR motions. During the activity, facilitators will walk around and assist/engage families with activity. Evaluator will have Observational Check List#1 ready to identify childrenare demonstrating the proper form of brushing teeth. Each facilitator will walk around and interactwith families. Prompting questions eachfacilitator will ask  If they remember how to brushtheir teeth (Circular motions)  How long shouldyou brush your teeth? (2 minutes)  How often are you supposed to brush your teeth? (Twice a day) **If there are too many children,each facilitator will have their own Observational Check Listand responsible to meet with families.Observational Check Lists shouldbe prefilledat the beginning introduction portion** Facilitators will ring bell after 6-7 minutes. Assistchildrenwith placing their paintings on the drying table. Throw away newspapers, usedtooth brushes,and paint cups. Use wipes for any spills onfloor, on tables, or on parents/children’s hands. **Facilitators will encourage families to assistwith cleaning up.** 5. Lecture #2 Flossing: (2-3 minutes) Facilitator#3 will then teach a brief lessononthe importance of flossing and how to floss.
  • 4.  Flossing is difficult,but that’s why mommy and daddy are there to help!  Parents coulduse the flossing picks for child’s mouth. **Demonstrate a flossing pick**  Flossing helps getthe germs out, which are stuck inthe spaces between our teeth. The facilitator #3 will demonstrate the steps the proper steps in flossing.  Loop your index fingers onboth sides of the string,with a nice grip.  Wedge the string inbetween the teeth.  Lift up and out of mouth. 6. Flossing with Egg Cartons Activity: (6-7 minutes) After the lecture is done, facilitator #3,#2 and #1 will place half egg cartons onto the crafts table with a single strandof yarn per half egg carton Facilitator #1 with explain the rules ofthe activity.  Each childwill get their own half egg carton with Play Dough placed.  Each childwill get their own strandof yarn.  Each childwill have to getthe Play Dough out of the egg carton using their yarn. (Encourage parents to assisttheir childusing the loop method previously lectured.)  Place Play Dough onto paper plates to prevent mess. As families are participating in activity, Facilitators will engage with children and parents and prompting discussions by asking:  Can you showme how to floss your teeth? (indicating to the egg carton) At this time, Evaluator will use Observational Check List#2 and circulate around, identifying which childhas demonstrated effective flossing. After 5-6 minutes,Facilitators will ring the clean-up bell, and encourage families to helpwith cleaning up. **Optional: Save Play Dough if not completely damaged** 7. Wrap Up: (4-5 minutes) Facilitators will prompt families with a final discussioncovering main points from today’s workshop. If families do not remember, simply restate them:  Brushing your teeth is important, because it helps keepyour mouth cleanand germfree!  Brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time is the best way to keepyour mouth healthy.  Brushing your teeth incircular motions is the best way to cleanyour mouth.  Flossing helps getthe germs out, which are stuck inthe spaces between our teeth. Facilitator #2 will ask: “Raise your hand if you think brushing your teeth is important.” Evaluator will recordhow many children respond to question using Final Observational Check List#3.
