PERSONAL PROFILE:
PRESENT POSTION: Northern Health & Social Care Trust Waste and
Recycling manager.
Primary role: - Lead Professional responsible for the development,
implementation and review of the waste management, minimisation and
recycling strategy and policy for the Trust, ensuring the Trust fully
complies with relevant waste management legislation.
Specific responsibility: - design, develop and implement and review
policies and procedures that accompany staff training programmes.
Provide specialist advice to clinical and non clinical staff on waste
management including waste management training.
Monitor, audit and control all classifications of waste segregation and
effectiveness to ensure our Duty of Care is met.
Management of all legal documentation including Waste Transfer notes,
Consignment note, Waste Management Licenses and Permits’.
Responsible for the Trust Waste budget, ensuring optimum use of
resources and effective budgetary management systems are in place.
Development of KPIs to ensure performance and financial targets are
met and to identify opportunities.
Research into new technologies and services to develop business
cases; tender specifications and to adjudicate tenders. Contract manage
those contractors that provide waste services and equipment to the
Trust.
SKILLS: - good communication skills to deliver training programmes
and collaborate with other disciplines to deliver strategies to support
compliance and safe systems of work.
Able to analysis and interpret statistical information to produce
management reports for the Senior Management Team, Directors and
other department managers, the Trust Board, other government bodies
and the public.
Well organised and able to meet deadlines promoting a culture of
efficiency and continuous service improvement among staff.
Able to manage people, lead a team to delegate appropriate
responsibility and authority to staff in order to ensure optimum and

EXPERIENCE:
Date: 2010 to present, NHSCT Waste and Recycling manager
Accomplishments
• Designed and implemented a fully integrated recycling domestic
waste service across the Trust to 8 hospitals, 150 community
facilities, 14,000 staff and a population of 443,080. Previously
the recycling rate was 13%, now the recycling rate is 80%, 15%
recovered and 5% landfill.
• Significantly improved the financial performance throughout the
Trust by delivering recycling, better segregation of all
classifications of waste and contract management.
• The procurement and installation of software to enhance waste
audits for all classifications of waste throughout Trust facilities.
The software includes inspection frequency, concise
questioning; accurate audit reports and timetabled rectification
periods.
• Successfully negotiated a better healthcare waste collection
service to increase cost efficiencies through the rationisation of
collection frequencies and the number and size of clinical and
pharmaceutical waste bins.
• Implementation of further recycling schemes outside of the
domestic waste stream to include the recycling of clothes, metal,
batteries, paint tins, fluorescent tubes and toner cartridges.
• Collaboration with Social Enterprise groups in the delivery of up-
cycling of unwanted furniture and the distillation of waste
cooking oil into bio-diesel
• Mentoring adults with learning difficulties within the processes of
project development from project concept, research, business
case, initiation and completion.
• Introduction of balers and compactors across the Trust to
increase recycled waste collection efficiency.
• Introducing new technologies for on-site pre-treatment of food
waste.
• Being a member of the project working group for the Central
Procurement Directorate (CPD). Implementing regional contracts
for NI Civil Service to standardise services and achieve best
value for money for contracted services through the collaborative
procurement programme.
