Designed for CxOs and their senior department and functional leaders, Microsoft Envision provides an opportunity for attendees to hear from some of the most forward-thinking minds in business and technology, with each day featuring prominent industry visionaries and business experts who will share the latest ideas, trends and innovations. Participants can explore the latest solutions, and discover the strategies that will help them, their teams, and their business achieve more," the company said. Overall, Envision attendees that we talked to felt that the agenda was posted late, the content was light, and some of the sessions seemed completely out of place. The crowd was significantly smaller than Convergence. Official word was 6100 attendees, but in actuality we saw closer to 3000. The footprint of the entire event seemed smaller as most everything happened in areas adjacent to the EXPO floor, doing what in the past seemed nearly impossible of making the New Orleans convention center seem small and intimate. Even the Train concert, which was the entertainment draw of the week, had the feel of being inside a small town bar.
- #4 Unlike Convergence, which was known for being Microsoft's stage to announce its Dynamics roadmaps and discuss new product features, Envision appears to be more focused on broader business topics. According to the Web site, Envision sessions will fall into three areas: Business trends and themes -- including Internet of Things (IoT), big data and analytics, cybersecurity, productivity, mobility, and more. Industry trends -- including Manufacturing, Retail, Financial Services, Public Sector, Consumer Packaged Goods, Hospitality and Travel, Professional Services, and more. Leadership growth in key business roles -- including sales, operations, IT, marketing, finance, customer service, and more. Microsoft says it is transferring the technical Dynamics content that would have been shown at Convergence to its Ignite conference, which takes place this year on Sept. 26-30. each year Microsoft Envision will concentrate on the big picture trends in technology and how those trends affect business practices. The common thread running throughout the 2016 conference, from keynote to breakout sessions, was the concept of the digital transformation of business. To sum up, the idea is that because of big data, the Internet of Things, analytics, and other technologies, the way we conduct business has, and will continue to, change dramatically. The Envision conference looks to shed some light on what and how these transformations are manifesting themselves.
- #6 Nadella, in his opening Microsoft Envision keynote said “The very nature of work is changing.” He spoke about Microsoft reinventing productivity and business process through the Windows 10 platform and other products. “With all of the abundance of technology, what is still scarce is human attention and time. Our goal in reinventing business process and productivity is to help you reclaim that time to grow your focus on things that matter the most to you and your organization.” Nadella shared the stage with others during his keynote, including Microsoft employees and Astronaut Scott Kelly (pictured above) who spent nearly one year on the International Space Station. When asked what business people could learn about technology from his experience in space, Kelly said that, as he left the International Space Station for the last time, he was “absolutely inspired by what we are capable of achieving if we dream it — and that we have to put the resources behind it.” This conference is all about business transformation and digital transformation, and the role technology can play in making these changes happen," said CEO Satya Nadella in his introductory keynote. Envision is different from other Microsoft conferences, he explained. The sessions, which include "Leadership's Role in Business Transformation" and "Industry Innovation Disruption and Trends," are for leaders who already think about technology's role in shaping businesses and society
- #7 “Satya described Microsoft’s mission as being ‘to empower every person and business to achieve more’. In order to achieve this, businesses should ask themselves two questions: 1) how is my business being challenged by digital transformation and 2) how is my business model being digitally transformed? According to Satya, digital transformation can be summed up as follows: Engaging with customers – We are on the cusp of major shifts: removing language barriers, providing more intelligence (personal digital assistants/Cortana) and digital robots Empowering employees - Improving organizational effectiveness through the use of technology such as OneNote, Wonderlist, Power BI, Skype for Business, Pulse and Yammer Optimizing operations – Internet of things, better service, continual improvement, and embedding BI and applications Products and services – Where is the gross margin, products or services “It is no longer just about procuring one solution and deploying one solution, it is not about one simple CRM or ERP or even office automation solutions that you get from us or others… it is really about you thinking as a digital company,” stated Nadella.
- #8 Nadella and Lilian Rincon of the Skype team previewed enhancements to Skype that one attendee, Rieva Lesonsky, called “mind blowing.” The enhancements will include making Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, persistent within Skype. If you need to look something up, such as check your calendar, you will be able to click on the Cortana icon and ask Cortana to check your schedule without leaving Skype. Along with the integration with Cortana, Skype will also be able to interact with “bots” or automated artificial intelligence agents from other organizations. One example of bots included a hotel bot that helped with booking a room — all from within Skype. Nadella called this shift in how we will interact with technology “conversations as a platform.” According to the Skype team, the Cortana enhancements will be rolled out in the near future although no date was given. Bots, the team said, are something that can be created today by visiting the Skype Developer platform. What does this mean for small business people who use Skype? According to Lesonsky, “It’s like having a secretary or personal assistant — for free.” Skype bot technology First introduced during Build 2016 on March 30th, the Skype bot technology was one of the exciting innovations that were presented during Envision. Skype AI-powered bots will allow users to obtain a variety of products and services via Skype in an interactive way. Organizations will be able to create their own video bots, which users will be able to find according to their needs. Such bots could, for instance, help users to book a hotel room from Skype. Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant, will be integrated to Skype as well. She will enable users to perform tasks directly from Skype, and to coordinate interactions with other bots by finding the ones that are relevant to them. Great news for developers: a Skype Developer program has been released to allow them to create new Skype bots. To try it, go to: skype.com/developer. A new Skype client is available, as well as preview bots for Windows Desktop, Android, iPhone and iPad. Additional information:
- #9 Microsoft also announced an important new partnership with car manufacturer Toyota at the Microsoft Envision event. The new collaboration called simply Toyota Connected was touched upon briefly in Nadella’s remarks. The new initiative will deliver a connected car technology drawing in part from Microsoft’s Azure cloud service. Toyota and Microsoft partner to create tomorrow’s cars Another exciting announcement was Microsoft’s partnering with Toyota to bring Cloud intelligence into driving. The purpose of this initiative is to create intelligent cars which will include a virtual assistant, health tracking, interactive traffic information… The technology will be designed to be integrated in such a way that users will not need to stare at screens – thus becoming more intuitive and making driving safer. Microsoft Azure will be the Cloud computing platform for everything Toyota Connected creates for this project.
- #10 Have you ever wanted to wave your hand and have a drawing appear in front of you as a hologram, or have a computer screen pop up in the air in front of you? Enter Microsoft’s augmented reality headset, called the Hololens. Microsoft calls it “the first fully untethered, holographic computer, enabling you to interact with high definition holograms in your world.” Developer devices are shipping now, although it’s likely to be a while before most small businesses are able to deploy the Hololens for their own uses.
- #11 Xoom Corporation is a leading digital money transfer or remittance provider that allows consumers to send money, pay bills and reload mobile phones from the United States to 33 countries, including China, India, Mexico and the Philippines. PayPal is a worldwide provider of online payment services. Online money transfers serve as electronic alternatives to traditional paper methods like checks and money orders. PayPal is one of the world’s largest Internet payment companies. It is in the process of being separated from eBay and will be an independently traded company. The move will: Help PayPal extend it’s offerings to its customers by cross-selling Xoom’s services. Shorten time-to-market. (Xoom’s fast “funds-out” network helps PayPal to enter the growing marketplace with a strong presence in key international markets.) Allow Xoom to expand it’s portfolio of send-markets by leveraging PayPal’s international network. Venmo - Make and share payments PayPal is also behind Venmo, the digital wallet service with a social element to it. Venmo, which is popular with millennials and younger generations, is used four to five times per week on average by customers because of the social element and the ability to split the cost of payments for things like meals and entertainment. Whereas, PayPal is used on average by customers just a little over two times per month. Schulman foresees that Venmo and PayPal will be a seamless experience in the future.

Envision also shined a light on Ecolab, a $14 billion company that is a leading global provider of water, hygiene and energy technologies and services. It has partnered with Microsoft to use recent and future developments in cloud computing, applying cutting-edge technology to speed up how worldwide industries tackle water scarcity.

- #15 Power BI is also set to receive something of a power-up. Available in over 140 countries across the globe, including the USA, the service has enjoyed some popularity. Its expansion into the enterprise world is set only to continue with the announcement of new connectors, dashboards and reports for the service, drawing data from many of the industry's most popular sources of data. The Power BI cloud service works together with Excel to provide a complete self-service analytics solution. With Excel for authoring reports and Power BI for Office 365 for sharing them, everyone in your organization has a powerful new way to work with data Other Microsoft tools are interconnected to give companies greater insight into their operations and to enable real-time interaction with customers. Cortana generates alerts in Power BI when it notices unusual data, for example, and the new Power BI Embedded lets businesses share information with clients so they can view and interact with data.
- #17 Many companies are still engaged in proofs of concept to see where the Internet of Things (IoT) can bring value to their operations and strategies, but a number of IoT apps have already taken root in a cross-section of industry sectors and are producing favorable business impact. Here are 10 good examples. Transportation infrastructure The insertion of sensors at key points of highways and railways is enabling cities to monitor the wellness of their transportation infrastructures, along with events like traffic flow and congestion. The information these IoT sensors send back to headquarters is used to notify motorists of heavy congestion points and alternate routes. It also serves as a predictive means of showing where equipment failures are imminent, so repair crews can be dispatched to fix vulnerable equipment before actual failures (and traffic stoppages) result. 2: Safety of sensitive goods during transport Foodstuffs and medical supplies often require stringent temperature and humidity controls during storage and shipment. To facilitate climate control, logistics companies use environmentally controlled, sealed containers. The containers are equipped with sensors that emit status reports to a central network so they can be monitored for adherence to humidity and temperature controls. If the environmentals within a container begin to fail or if tampering with a closed container seal is detected, the sensors immediately send out alerts to the central network so appropriate steps can be taken. The use of IoT reduces spoilage of sensitive goods and also prevents tampering. 3: Logistics tracking and performance Major logistics carriers now use trucks that are sensor equipped so shipments can be tracked along routes, optimum delivery routes can be used, and timeliness can be tracked. In some cases, sensors are also used to track speeds, braking habits, etc., of drivers to ensure that the safest and most environmentally friendly driving practices are used. 4. Equipment diagnostics and preventive maintenance on the factory floor As manufacturers adopt new 21st century practices, equipment within the factory is being outfitted with sensors that automatically flash an alert into the central factory operations monitoring network when a weakening component or other failure-inducing condition is detected. In this way, manufacturers can take a machine offline, reroute manufacturing operations and repair the faulty equipment before a total failure occurs that stops production 5: Smart street lights Street lights with IoT capability now "communicate" with city utility managers who are miles away, sending IoT data on energy usage and enabling remote adjustments to lighting to compensate for local environmental conditions—such as dimming the lights on a moonlit night or increasing lighting during rainstorms and fog. The ability to climate-adjust street lighting economizes energy usage and reduces energy costs. 6: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) Aerial drones equipped with IoT sensors are being used by oil and gas exploration companies, mining companies, and agribusiness to chart and monitor remote, difficult to access areas and to measure elements such as soil composition and moisture content. The ability to perform these operations remotely saves field time and reduces the safety risk incurred when personnel are dispatched to remote and uncharted areas. 7: Inventory tracking during shipment In areas of the world where the theft of inventory from trucks in transit for sale on the black market is widespread, transportation companies are attaching IoT sensors to packages and are making the practice known to locals. In one case, a transporter reported that the theft rate had fallen from 50% of inventory to 4% after IoT sensors were installed. 8: Home and business energy monitoring Homeowners and companies are employing environmental energy monitoring with the help of IoT sensors. The devices assist them in controlling energy consumption—whether it be for an individual home, a business, or a data center. 9: Mobile device tracking In 2014 alone, more than 10 million mobile devices were lost in the UK. The worldwide total of lost or stolen mobile devices is undoubtedly staggering. Enter IoT sensors that can be activated on these devices to at least prevent data breaches—and to possibly facilitate device retrievals. 10: Safety monitoring/tracking of Alzheimer's patients Individuals suffering from Alzheimer's or other mentally debilitating disorders can now be tracked via IoT sensors in case they leave the home and can't find their way back. In addition, IoT sensors can serve as a safety net for potentially dangerous situations. For example they can be attached to stove gas burners in case a burner is turned on and left unattended.
- #18 The cloud, big data, the Internet of Things, analytics are all broad concepts that exist beyond and outside of Microsoft. They are the concepts governing how business is, and will be, conducted. They are now part of the new fabric of how things work, and you'd better get on board or get left behind.
