• Write History in the following time slots:

5. 1.2 BACKGROUND
South African Apartheid definition:
The segregation of different people based on
race.
When did it occur?
It started in 1948 and ended in 1994.
Apartheid was a stricter and more deadly form
of the segregation that was occurring before
1948.
6. 1.3 ACTIVITY TWO:
HOMEWORK
Let’s discover some new, interesting facts about
the civil resistance in South Africa 1970s to
1980s !
Instructions:
• Access the TED app.
• Watch the following TED talk: My life in

• Once you have finished watching the talk,
draw a mind map as a summary of what
content was mentioned.
This is due in this lesson next week.

7. 1.4 BLACK
CONSCIOUSNESS
Definition:
Identifying yourself as a Black person in order
to participate in movements or political groups.
First started in the United States of America.
Steve Biko was the leader of Black
Consciousness in South Africa during Apartheid.
8. 1.5 ACTIVITY
THREE: GROUP
PROJECT
Instructions
• Find a partner (you cannot change later on).
• Download the app, National Archives
DocsTeach.
• Use the app to find information on Black
Consciousness in South Africa 1970s to 1980s.
• With your gathered information, create an A2
sized poster.
• Do not forget to reference!
• Due: 3 weeks
9. 1.6 16 JUNE 1976
UPRISING
• This is also called the June 16th
Youth Soweto Uprising.
• Students were protesting being
taught in Afrikaans and having to
learn the language.
• Police opened fire without
instruction on the students who
were not armed or violent.
• Many students were killed or
injured.
• First time the media showed the
world and other South Africans,
the civil resistance and how it was
being suppressed by the
government.
10. 1.7 GOVERNMENT REFORMS
• The government’s reforms were met with civil
resistance.
• International outcry.
• This took form in marches, protests and strikes.
• Effected the start of the end of Apartheid.
11. 1.8 ACTIVITY FOUR: PAST PAPERS
Instructions
• Complete the past paper being handed around now in class and hand
at the end of class.
• At home access the app, GCSE History, and download and print the
second past paper.
• Complete the past paper for the next lesson as revision for your test
next week.
• Next lesson, you will all swop papers and we will mark them together
and then return the paper to its owner.
• As you are leaving, place the papers with your name on it, in the
by the door.
They will be returned in the next lesson.
