1. What makes a good music video?
There are many different ways musicians and directors can make
music videos effective and good to watch. They can do this by using a
variety of camera angles and movements, the mise en scene, editing
and also sound is very important.
There are 4 different types of music videos that can be used, these
types can either be used together or just on their own. The first one
is being illustrative, this is when the music video corresponds with
the song and tells a story. The second one is called amplification, this
is when either one word, lyric or idea and amplify it making it the key
thing in the music video. The third one is disjuncture, this is when the
music video is completely different from the song, and it is very
random and has nothing to do with the song. And the last one is
performance, this is when the music video is just being performed by
the artist or group.
The music video im going to be analysing is Sam Smith – I know im
not the only one. When analysing this music video im going to be
looking at the camera movements, mise en scene, editing and the
sound.
From watching this music video a few times it is very clear to me that
it is both illustrative and performance. The illustrative side is showing
a woman upset because her husband is cheating on her, which we
can also get from the name of the song ‘I know im not the only one’.
It is also performance because in some parts of the music video you
can to see Sam Smith singing the song.
I like the way the video is edited because it shows two things
happening at the same time. You get to see the husband out with
another woman and you also get to see the woman at home crying. I
think this is a good idea because you get to see both sides of the
story, even though the lyrics of the song are showing how the
woman feels.

2. The majority of the video is also in slow motion, this works well
because the song is quite a slow, sad song.
In this video the camera is unsteady and shaky when it is on the
woman which shows us that there is quite a tense atmosphere.
There is also lots of close ups on the woman’s face which shows us
her emotion, at one point when the song talks about her crying there
is a close up on her face showing her tears
