SHOR ESIDE
Summer / 2016
THIS EDITION of Shoreside covers another period of
high tempo support to operations and preparations for
the future. When we are head down, concentrating on
delivery of the next key event, it is often easy to forget
all that we have achieved, but even just a quick scan of
this magazine will remind us of our many successes.
The Naval Base Safety Stand Down in May was a
valuable opportunity for us all to reflect on our
workplace and to ensure it is as safe as it can reasonably
be. Spotting those less-than-safe practices that we
might have come to accept as normal is really difficult
unless we give ourselves the time to step back and cast
a critical eye over what we do. I was delighted to see so
many people enjoying the Families’ Day, showing off
this unique work place to those most important to
them. We owe a tremendous vote of thanks to the
organisers and sponsors of the day.
The yachts of the America’s Cup were once again
launched from the Naval Base -providing another great
opportunity to showcase the professionalism and
variety that goes on behind the dockyard wall, as well
as contributing significantly to the local economy.
You will all have seen the huge amount of work
going on around the Naval Base preparing it for the
future. The Shiphall is now firmly established as the
Minor War Vessels Centre of Specialisation, resilience
is being built into our power supplies, jetties improved
and the physical preparations for the first carrier
continue apace, ready for her arrival next spring. Amid
all this our warships have been deploying and
returning around the world, ceaselessly contributing to
the worldwide maritime security on which our island
nation’s prosperity depends. This is a stunning list of
achievements for which my huge congratulations and
sincere thanks.
