WARSAW
MASOVIAN VOIVODESHIP
Warsaw, located in the central part of the country, is the capital of Poland and
the Masovian Voivodeship. It is the largest city, both in area and in population.
It has 1,729,000 registered residents – as much as 4.5% of Poland’s citizens.
The Warsaw population keeps growing, mainly due to the inflow of people from
smaller towns. Over 3,370,000 reside in the entire Warsaw agglomeration, which
makes is the second Polish agglomeration in terms of population.
Similarly to Warsaw, also the entire Masovian Voivodeship constitutes the largest
and the most densely populated area in the country. Despite the fact that as
much as 14% of Poland’s population reside here and 20% of Polish GDP is
produced here, it is Warsaw that is most definitely the heart of the region. All
national authorities and the most important institutions, such as the National
Bank of Poland, the Warsaw Stock Exchange, as well as the largest international
corporations operating in the Polish market are based here. This is the main
political and administrative centre, where 1/3 of the population of the entire
voivodeship reside, but also an important economic area. As many as 808,000
people are employed in Warsaw, which makes it an thriving and quickly
developing business environment. Besides Warsaw, the most important cities in
the Masovian region are Radom, Płock and Siedlce.

INFRASTRUCTURE
ROAD TRANSPORT
Warsaw constitutes a transport hub not only for national but also international roads. The most impor-
tant ones are the pan-European corridors which run through Warsaw and connect Helsinki, Tallinn,
Riga, Krakow, Bratislava, Berlin, Minsk, Moscow, Žilina, Ostrava, and in future probably also Odessa and
Bucharest. Moreover, the A2 motorway connecting Berlin, Poznań and Warsaw, crosses the Mazovian
Voivodeship. The Warsaw bypass is currently under construction – it will eventually reach the length
of 80 km, at the moment its 30-km section has been constructed – an expressway. It is planned that
congestion in Warsaw will be relieved by 2 bypasses constituting the heart of national transit routes –
this will be the City Bypass and the Express Warsaw Bypass for the A2 motorway and the S8 and S17
expressways.

RAIL TRANSPORT
The Warsaw Railway Hub is composed of 6 main railway stations: Warszawa Centralna (Warsaw
Central), Warszawa Wschodnia i Zachodnia (Warsaw East and West), Warszawa Gdańska, Warszawa
Śródmieście and Warszawa Wileńska. On top of this, there are dozens smaller stations and stops.
Besides intercity and international railways, Fast Municipal Rail (SKM) also operates here, connecting
locations within the Warsaw agglomeration. There are 1774 km of railway tracks in the voivodeship.
The capital itself is connected by the pan-European railway routes with Gdynia, Berlin, Moscow, Tallinn
and Vienna, but also Bratislava, Bucharest, Hannover, Frankfurt or Dresden.

AIR TRANSPORT
The potential of Warsaw as the air traffic hub depends on the operation of two airports: F. Chopin
Airport and Modlin Airport. The first one, located 10 km from the city centre, is the largest airport
in Poland, which provides flight connections with almost the entire world. Each year the number of
passengers using this airport grows and currently amounts to over 10 million a year. Modlin Airport
was opened in 2012 and is located less than 40 km from the city boundary.
