The Trinidad State Junior College Lady
Trojan basketball squad is off to a 2-and-4
start to the 2014 season with a tough week-end
of basketball in front of them. They
faced Barton Community College (3-1) on
Friday, and preseason #22 New Mexico JC
(5-0) on Saturday at a tournament in La
Junta.
The Trojans started the 2014 season
with a pair of losses in Texas, falling to a
hot shooting Clarendon 80-49 and to Frank
Phillips 71-60. Against the Lady Plainsmen
sophomore point guard Claire Ioannidis
torched the nets for 26 points to lead the
Trojans.
The Following Tuesday the Trojans
played their home opener against North-west
Kansas Tech. Kori Eurich led TSJC to
a 74-57 victory, scoring 21 points and pull-ing
down seven boards. Ioannidis added
19 points, eight steals and eight assists and
Holly Woodbury came off the bench to put
in 18 points and gather 11 rebounds.
The Trojans hosted Clarendon last week-end
at the TSJC classic, again falling but
in a much tighter game the second time
around, 67-61. Eurich put in 20 to pace the
Trojans. Last Saturday TSJC handily de-feating
Northern New Mexico JV by a final
of 79-43. All 14 Lady Trojans scored in the
contest.
This past Tuesday the Trojans headed to
Española, New Mexico for a rematch with
Northern New Mexico’s JV but found a
much different team. Despite leading early
the Trojans gave up 34 second half points,
falling 59-52. Eurich again led the Trojans
with 20 points and eight boards and fellow
sophomore Marcella Sanchez pulled down
11 rebounds.
The Lady Trojans will play their final
home game of the semester next Tuesday,
November 18, when they host Adams State
JV at 6 p.m. at Scott Gym.

Police officer charged in fatal shooting
ROCKY FORD, Colo. (AP) — A Rocky Ford police officer
who shot and killed a 27-year-old man has been charged with
second-degree murder.
Otero County District Attorney James Bullock says
41-year-old officer James Ashby was arrested Friday for the
Oct. 12 death of Jack Jacquez Jr., who was shot in his home.
Circumstances surrounding the shooting are detailed in the
arrest warrant, but that document has been sealed.
The shooting led to protest marches and a candlelight vigil
in the southeastern Colorado county.
Jack Jacquez Sr. tells The Denver Post he is “relieved we
are getting some justice and this hasn’t been swept under the
table.”
Ashby, who had been put on administrative leave during
the investigation, is being held on $1 million bail. He is sched-uled
to appear in court Wednesday.

up to a foot of new snow as another storm moved through
Colorado on Saturday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Fredin says
the Front Range can expect up to three inches of snow, while
the mountains can expect up to 15 inches by Sunday.
The ski resort towns of Vail, Snowmass Village, Aspen
and Crested Butte are expecting 6 to 12 inches of snow by Sat-urday
night. That’s on top of up to two feet of snow that has
already fallen over some areas of the High Country over the
past week.

Her body was found in an off-post motel. The coroner said
she had been strangled and struck.
If convicted, Mayo faces up to life in prison without parole.
