College Knowledge Los Angeles is service that provides information about College Information, Applications, Test Prep, and Financial Aid events in the Los Angeles area. The website and app aims primarily to help low-income and first-generation college students connect to these events so they're able to talk to people and learn about resources in-person. There is a wealth of information about events and information online, but many students and parents are disconnected from these resources and many need to be able to admissions officials to help on their college journey.

To end where we started, many of us here didn’t get to where we are alone. Didn’t get here on solely pamphlets and books.
Imagine being the first in your family to take on this challenge—what test to take? How do I pay for college? Subsidized or unsubsidized loans? Personal statements? College applications? Scholarship applications?
While there are plenty of resources out there that aim to simplify the process of getting to college, it’s still not simple to take action on it. And most of these resources cost money. What if you are from a low-income household? How can you afford such resources let alone be able to afford a higher education?
What if your family predominately speaks another language? In plain English, getting to college is difficult.
This scenario is by no means hypothetical. It is often experienced by thousands of students in LAUSD.
So how do we bridge this gap in college access?
=========
There really is no app that provides this localized, relevant information.
CollegeBoard / College Live don’t do localized connections.
College Knowledge LA is a web app optimized for mobile use. We went the mobile route because 70% of low income students have smartphones.
So here’s how it works:
There are over 15 college prep organizations in the area that host over 50 events a year, and our app crowdsources these events.
Our app creates a database that users can search for free, upcoming college and financial aid events in their local community.
Users can search events by zip code or event type (such as college adminissions, financial aid, or test prep)
What sets our app apart is that we aren’t just giving students resources to read. We are creating real access to real people who can provide the personalized guidance students need.

TECHNOLOGY
We currently exist as a website and look forward to develop a dedicated mobile app as well. We don’t want to limit their access because we are about creating access.
Verified educators and community representatives can post events / workshops that are free to the community.
CKLA is also geo location enabled so that users can find resources that is both relevant and close to them.
Because we understand the importance of having someone there who can answer your questions and guide you through the process, and this is one way to help students find potential advisors, mentors, or community memebrs that share our mission – increasing higher education access for students from low income communities.
