Editor's Notes
So here’s some good news to share at a forum focused on library research. We’re on the right path.
Futuring and foresight, at it’s core is all about the study of change. Like many other disciplines, futuring and foresight begins with careful observation and consideration – though in the case of futuring it is observation of the trends and changes that happen in the world around us.
When we activate our minds to observe the trends and changes, we take a first steps to considering what the futures we encounter might develop out of.
To help illustrate this idea, futurists utilize a tool called a cone of plausibility or futures cone.
This model was developed by Peter Bishop and his colleagues at the University of Houston.
We can imagine this cone expanding through time. From the present there extends a baseline of change – this center line is the extension of our present context further out into the future. But as we can see from the cone, as the cone extends out into the future the range of possible futures expands, opening to an ever widening range of alternative futures. We can invest our efforts in fully understanding the baseline of change to have a greater sense of the path our world is on. At the same time, we continue to observe new changes and trends to better understand a greater diversity of plausible futures. We can also work to hone in on preferable futures – rooted in trends and changes – and establish visions, goals, and actions to help us achieve those preferable futures.
So there are many futures, not just one.
Until they become the present, there exist a diverse set of plausible futures.
A set of possibilities, plausible alternative futures with believable stories behind them.
We explore and prepare our study of these futures not to know the exact futures, but so that we are not surprised by any one of them.
While it would be impossible for us to be too right (too many variables, really), we adopt a goal of not being too wrong.
The future is a combination of what the world does and what people do about it. It is never just one or the other.
