Author Study of George Orwell George Orwell was a literary tactician who won two major awards because of hia advanced and intriguing use of
propaganda. At first glance, his books appear to be stories about animals, however, they contain much deeper and influential meanings. Orwell is most
recognized for his portrayal of dystopian societies and how they parallel present society. Through intense allegories, Orwell unintentionally crafted
novels that are applicable to the totalitarian government systems prevalent in many advanced societies today. His dystopian societies have influenced
many on history and government alike, giving it timeless qualities.
Born as Eric Arthur Blair,George Orwell was an extremely skilled novelist, critic, journalist, and essayist capable of spreading his thoughts through
incredible literary propaganda. Orwell was born on July 25, 1903 in Bengal, India. He moved to England at a young age with his mom shortly after
his father died. Orwell was first publicly recognized for his writing when a poem that he wrote at age eleven appeared in a local newspaper. Orwell
was well educated through many reputable English academies that he was able to attend through hard–earned scholarships. After education, Orwell
traveled back to India, where his grandma lived, and joined the police. While on a work leave due to catching a deadly disease in India, Orwell decided
to quit his police career and devote his life to

Analysis Of George Orwell 's 1984 Essay
Heavy oppression from a powerful government can be overwhelming and burdening. Citizens suffocate under the rules and regulations and are
denied freedoms that should be entitled. When it comes down to this, there are many who prefer to not rock the boat, or do not even see the
oppression happening. However, there are a selected few that fight the authority. George Orwell used his skillful techniques to create a dystopian
novel that describes his nightmare vision of a possible future society. This work is remembered today to warn citizens to be conscious as to what is
around us, what is controlling us, and where our hope should be. The novel, 1984, written by George Orwell has opened reader's eyes on the
power–hungry political systems forcing oppression, while rebelling against these governments in search of hope, love, freedom, and uses an
impressive skill of timelessness in his writing to make a powerful impact still studied to this day. An omniscient power known as Big Brother rules
over the province of Oceania. The word itself, Oceania, sounds promising and delightful. To the citizens, there is no other province; it is believed to be
the best and only. This territory is broken into three classes: the Inner Party, Outer Party, and meaningless Proles. The small, ruling Inner Party has the
others unknowingly brainwashed. They are programmed into following orders and rules with fear of consequence otherwise. The citizens even have an
official language, newspeak, which they

1984 By George Orwell Analysis
Throughout the novel 1984 by George Orwell, there were underlying messages presented to the reader regarding many issues. Issues such as free
will, freedom to believe in what you wish, and the liberty to express oneself, are some of the issues addressed by the novel. The author, George
Orwell, takes away all the simple rights of the people existing in a future world to present the audience with an idea of what life could be like without
these rights. One could say that Orwell presents many themes in the novel but the strongest being: stand up for your rights. Earth has changed, there
are now three countries: Eastasia, Eurasia, and Oceania which are all ran with a totalitarian system of government. Technology hasn't exactly
advanced but there are now telescreens, screens meant to track a citizen's every move, and microphones, meant to hear every utter, in each and every
home. A citizen of this future environment is meant to obey every whim of that of the higher class, otherwise known as the Inner Party. The Inner
Party controls everything from articles in newspapers,to posters on the streets, to telecasts on telescreens, and even to the facts in history books. At
the drop of a hat the entire history of a country can be changed simply because the ruling class tells the workers to do so. All the workers and citizens
in the country are to believe...show more content...
If people are scared to stand up for what they believe in horrific things will happen such as that in the novel. Citizens were ripped of their own
thoughts, personalities, ideas, dreams, and anything else that makes one unique simply because the government was able to slowly take all of it
away. One should never allow their rights to be stolen from them even if it would mean risking life, because it could have only taken a few people to
solve what is now the problem of a

In George Orwell's 1984, the Brotherhood is the covert, anti–government organization headed by Emmanuel Goldstein. In my opinion, the Brotherhood
does not exist. Its existence in Oceania is to ferret out would–be traitors and any forms of insurrection. The Brotherhood is a meticulous fabrication of
the Party and its existence serves as a means of cementing the Party's own doctrines. The idea of the Brotherhood is instilled in everyday life in
Oceania. The Party needs a malicious opponent for the people to project their hate upon while also using the organization as a way of keeping citizens
loyal to their regime. Love for Big Brother is concomitant in hate for The Brotherhood and Emmanuel Goldstein. O'Brien –who pretends to be a

Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' Orwell ' Essay
Born Erick Arthur Blair, Orwell disregarded his birth name and changed it to George Orwell. After Orwell changed his name, he transitioned from
a supporter of the British imperial to a literary political rebel. Orwell lived in India in his younger years, and later attended a preparatory boarding
school in 1911 on the Sussex Coast. Orwell did not come from a rich family but a hardworking family. His mother was a French extraction in India
and his father was a minor British official in the Indian Civil Service. In preparatory school, Orwell was known to be a brilliant, poor student, and was
treated differently than the middle–class students. Growing up, he was shy and an ill–tempered boy who told his stories through autobiographical
essays and satire stories. In 1922, Orwell won two scholarships to England 's leading schools, Winchester and Eton. He chose to attend Eton, and
once graduated, he decided to follow his family's hardworking tradition. Parallel to his father, Orwell moved to Burma and became an Assistant
District Superintendent in the Indian Imperial Police. From boyhood, he always wanted to become a writer, and with realization of the forced British
Imperial Political System amongst the Burmese people he felt ashamed of his position; therefore, Orwell expressed his memories and reactions of
imperial rule in his novel Burmese Days and autobiographical essays, "A Hanging" and "Shooting an Elephant," all classics of metrical exposer. In

George Orwell 1984 Analysis
While George Orwell's book is nearly 70 years old, the novel is still relevant today in the discussion of Big Brother, in relation to fake news, and
politics. Many conspiracy theories have been developed over time as technology has advanced, and the concern of how far the government can reach
into our civil liberties with the Patriot Act seem to be an underlying theme in the novel 1984. The imbalance of social classes is also frightening
similar to 1984 and society today. Winston Smith is living in a world of dystopia, where the government is using propaganda, catchy tabloids, and
Hollywood entertainment to distract, defend, and convince its citizens that their reality is true, sound familiar? Donald Trump's circus like election and

Across the world, History instructors educate their students with fundamental facts about wars dating back to 2700 BCE and so forth, and also the
affirmative or cynical aftermath of costs, alliances, and materialistic items relating to the wars. However, a handful of teachers bypass and omit the
most interesting parts of warfare, such as the development of citizens during and after these vicious conflicts. Author, George Orwell, seeks to find
the effects of citizens in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Orwell witnessed "nightmarish atrocities committed by fascist political regimes," (1984)
on citizens of Spain, Germany, and the Soviet Union. The government of Spain, the Soviet Union, and Germany captured "tens of thousands of
civilians and refugees who [died] in concentration camps and prisons" (Process of Extermination). These vicious acts lead Orwell to fear the idea of a
totalitarian society. Moreover, Orwell wrote 1984 to warn people of the dangers associated with a totalitarian society, because he believed that one–day
history would repeat itself. Furthermore, Orwell includes his vision of "a post–atomic dictatorship in which every individual would be monitored
ceaselessly by means of the telescreen [that] seemed terrifyingly possible" (1984). In addition to the stalking telescreens, Orwell introduces the
effectiveness of thought control. Orwell uses characters and organizations such as The Party, who controls its citizens' thoughts, as well as their
feelings, to show

Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' Orwell '
Synopsis 1984 by George Orwell takes place in London, which is in a totalitarian country called Oceania and is about a man named Winston Smith
who is an irrelevant member of the ruling party, or the "Party." He is very frustrated about the Party's great oppression because it controls everything
from language to the nation's history. Thoughts against the country, or "thoughtcrimes", are considered illegal, one of the worst crimes, and
punishable by death. The Party forces people to refrain from using all the words relating to rebellion in a language called Newspeak. The Party also
does not allow sex or any form of individualism, and it monitors people through cameras, or "telescreens," to see if they are doing anything illegal and
against the Party. 1984 begins with Winston having frustrations about the Party's totalitarian control. He then writes about his frustrations as rebellious
thoughts in an illegal diary that he privately keeps since no one is allowed to write down thoughts. At his work at the Ministry of Truth, he has to
modify historical records to the Party's satisfaction. During his work he sees a gorgeous dark–haired girl walking by that he absolutely hates and
worries that she could report a thoughtcrime against Winston to the "Thought Police," a group of government officials that specifically monitors
thoughtcrimes. He also notices a man named O'Brien who is a member of the Party, but Winston likes him because he believes he is against some of

War Is Peace. Freedom Is Slavery. Ignorance Is Strength. The party slogan of Ingsoc illustrates the sense of contradiction which characterizes the
novel 1984. That the book was taken by many as a condemnation of socialism would have troubled Orwell greatly, had he lived to see the aftermath
of his work. 1984 was a warning against totalitarianism and state sponsored brutality driven by excess technology. Socialist idealism in 1984 had
turned to a total loss of individual freedom in exchange for false security and obedience to a totalitarian government, a dysutopia. 1984 was more than a
simple warning to the socialists of Orwell's time. There are many complex philosophical issues buried deep within...show more content...
This state of constant surveillance demands complete conformity among the population. In Oceania, there are no laws, but non–conformity is punished
by death. The thought police are an omnipresent force of the government, weeding out non–conformists and making them disappear on a regular basis.
Even a slight inflection in the voice or a look of the eye can be construed as thoughtcrime. Propaganda, terror, and technology are the tools of the state,
used to coerce and control the thoughts and actions of the populace. Reality is denied on a regular basis if it is non–consistent with party doctrine. The
main character of the novel, Winston Smith, said that "freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2=4."(Orwell,69)In fact, if the party said that 2+2=5,
the population would believe this to be truth. History is actually rewritten on a daily basis so as to appear consistent with party doctrine. The enemy
of today becomes the enemy of yesterday, poverty becomes progress, war becomes peace, and slavery becomes freedom. This concept of denying
reality in the face of obvious contradiction is known as doublespeak. It is central to the philosophy of Ingsoc, and is the greatest tool of the
government's mind–control agenda.
Winston Smith, the tragic non–conformist main character works as a member of the party. His job is to rewrite newspaper records

What Is The Tone Of 1984 By George Orwell
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Winston Smith is a character plagued by an oppressive party that controls and monitors its entire population.
On a journey to meet a young girl in the countryside, Winston's mood, setting and point of view are used with Orwell's diction and imagery to
portray a complex tone. Describing Winston as apprehensive and nervous throughout the beginning of the chapter because he does not know what is
going to happen and he is anxious to meet this new girl but fearful for his own existence. The start of chapter two symbolizes a shift in between
earlier parts of the book by supplying readers with a new setting and a new set of challenges for Winston to overcome. It begins as Winston cautiously

Standing at the entrance, he notices that the "bluebells were so thick underfoot that it was impossible not to tread on them" signifying a contrast
between this untouched society and the inner city. The bluebells resemble untouched nature and without any influence from anything but the sun,
and Winston resembles Big Brother and the party infecting and killing off everything creative as they "tread" on their way. Winston continues to
be uncertain of himself as he has a "vague idea" to gather flowers to present to the girl when they met. He is not sure if she will come, but knows if
she does, he would like to be prepared. While picking flowers a sound at his back ""froze him" because he did not know whether it was the patrols or
the girl. Further illustrating Winston's guilt as he freezes while being caught in the act of rebellion like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
As he continues to pick the bluebells to avoid looking guilty "a hand fell lightly on his shoulder" confirming that the girl has helped alleviate some of
his menacing thoughts. The fact that the hand "fell lightly" contrasts with Big brother, the party's harsh rule and how it has driven Winston into the
ground. The girl represents an escape from those worries and he followed her without

1984 George Orwell Analysis
"If you want to keep a secret, you must first hide it from yourself." In George Orwell's "1984," in order for your privacy to not be invaded not only do
you need to hide things from people but from yourself as well. "1984" is a story about a dystopian society where people are watched and controlled
by technology and are forced to believe what the Party and Big Brother want them to. The privacy issues in 1984 relating to the big idea of
manipulation and control, are relevant in social media, video surveillance, and the ability to use propaganda to control our thoughts. Social media; one
of the most popular, battery wasting, and manipulative use of the internet that is controlling society's every move. The Party in 1984, however,
chooses to take your thoughts and information as they please just for the purpose of power, "Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting
them together again in new shapes of your own choosing" (266). Basically, this means that the Party uses their knowledge of you to change you, and
invade your mind, kind of like how a celebrity can use their influence to make you want or do something.. I interpret this to mean that once the Party
has already invaded your thoughts, and know all of your information, they can choose to "cure" you by making you...show more content...

sum up, people are able to be controlled and manipulated by propaganda and persuasion, in 1984 and our society

George Orwell 1984 Analysis
Within reading the first ten pages of 1984 by George Orwell, some of the major themes have become evident. My first impression was that
Oceania is ruled by a dystopian government that oppresses the people. Most of Oceania is populated by the poor. The main character, Winston
Smith, lives in Victory Mansions. On page one it is said that in Winston's apartment that, "The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and rag mats."
Winston didn't bother taking the lift because, "even at the best of times it was seldom working,...". At the end of the hall was a large poster of Big
Brother, which could be seen from all floors of the apartment complex. The eyes of Big Brother seemed to be following you wherever you went. The
recurring quote of Big Brother is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU," which ran beneath the poster on the wall. "WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS
SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH,"

The words are significant to the novel due to how largely they are written on the side of the Ministry of Truth. On page ten we learn about the Two
Minute Hate. It is a short film that is shown every day. The Two Minute Hate serves as propaganda which is supposed to cause the people to feel
hatred towards the enemies of Oceania. The Two Minute Hate also gives the citizens a sense of National pride when the face of Big Brother
appears on the screen. During the Two Minute Hate we come across two people who also work within the Ministry. One of them is a girl who
Winston comes to dislike due to the uneasiness he feels in her presence. We also cross paths with a man named O'Brien. During the Two Minute Hate,
Winston feels as though he relates to O'Brien because he believes they share the same hatred towards the Party and Big Brother when they make eye

The purpose of this writing is to summarize a reading from George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language". The intended audience is Professor
Lindholm. The goals of this draft is to clarify the summary in my own words with no opinions. Also, providing enough information about the main
points of Orwell's essay. Based on this draft, I see the strengths falling under the main points of each paragraph and the introduction paragraph.
However, the weaknesses are to clarify more in each paragraph. In other words, to elaborate more so the reader can understand better. Since my
previous draft, I made a few changes in this essay. These changes include editing a couple of sentences and adding politics in the introduction. These
modifications are made in order to conform the requirements of this assignment. My questions are, "Where should I clarify more?" and "Where do you

Orwell analyzes that the English language is full of irrational thoughts and is what causing people to have more absurd understandings. In most cases,
political writings are commonly seen as poor quality scripts by the vagueness in our vocabulary. Orwell argues in order to advance from these
irrational thoughts, an individual may manage to ponder more precisely. As well, the writers may avert these bad tendencies if they prompt to move
through the obstacles. Throughout his essay, Orwell provides five passages that distribute into two aspects: "staleness of imagery" and "lack of
precision". Also, he contributes other factors of lousy writing. In the next few paragraphs, George Orwell amplifies these components of bad

George Orwell 1984 Analysis
George Orwell's book 1984 is the gift that keeps on giving for those that find dissent with their government. This book paints a bleak picture of a
totalitarian government that lies to, spies on and generally abuses its citizens. "The themes in this novel have become a major part of modern culture,
as have terms such as big brother and doublespeak" (Staff Writers, 2010). We even have a show on American television called "Big Brother" where
contestants are watched and scrutinized by cameras that are mounted throughout the living space. When the Ramones released their first album in
1976 they were considered to be one of the first punk rock bands. Punk rock itself piggybacks off of the notions posited in Orwell's 1984. It is

Rhetorical Analysis Of 1984 By George Orwell
The want to communicate with others is instinctual to all animals; communication is necessary to survive. As infants, humans coo, gurgle, and cry to
communicate their immediate needs to their providers. However, the provider does not exactly know what their child needs, due to the child's inability
to explain their distress through words. As the child develops and learns to speak, this communication barrier is broken. Words, even in their most
pure and basic form, are used for the sole purpose of expression. However, expressing oneself can have many goals and outcomes. In his treatise
Rhetoric, Aristotle writes about using words to express one's self for the sole purpose of persuading an audience. In his novel, 1984, George Orwell

During this time, Germany had many financial issues, which caused tension throughout the country. Also during this time, the Jewish community held
most of the country's money. Using these two ideas, Hitler convinced the Germans that their financial issues were due to the Jewish community
(Wistrich). This, although negative, is an example of using syllogisms and, ultimately, Logos, to appeal to an audience. Not to mention, Hitler
appealed to the already present feeling of hatred towards the Jewish community, which is an example of Pathos. Although more than a thousand years
after Aristotle's time, his philosophy on rhetoric still can be applied towards many public speakers. This proves that Aristotle's views on the use of
words in order to persuade are significant to language and history, as a

1984 By George Orwell Analysis
The strongest people are poor, starving, and treated like animals. In 1948, author George Orwell wrote the dystopian novel 1984. In 1984, Orwell
created a world without freedom of speech, motion, and thought to portray an idea of our world with totalitarian power. In the book, it follows a
member of the Outer Party named Winston, and his fight to keep his freedom of thought through love, rebellion, and secrecy. Throughout the book, it
portrays three important themes, War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. The statement, "Ignorance is Strength" is a deep
meaning throughout George Orwell's 1984 due to the jocundity of the Proles, the rigid rules and expectations of both the Inner and Outer party, and

Big Brother knows this, which is why it tries to toil order to control everything it can. Big Brother even controls the propaganda put up for the war,
in which one slogan said, "'Who controls the past', ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (37). Big
Brother creates itself to be a God like figure, interminable and the most important aspect of citizens' lives. They control their people down to their
intense thoughts and feelings, as said by Winston, "The terrible thing that the Party had done was to persuade you that mere impulses, mere
feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world" (165). Big Brother creates rules and
expectations to prevent people from feeling that Big Brother is absurd. They create laws such as the Anti Sex law, "What was more important was
that sexual privation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war fever and leader worship" (134). Big Brother's
strive for totalitarian power means that it is all Big Brother can focus on. They cannot worry about little things such as starving their entire population
or creating a false image, all they can focus on is world domination. Big Brother's demand for power makes it much more of a lesser value than the

Analysis Of George Orwell 's 1984
Those familiar with George Orwell's "1984" will recall that "Newspeak was designed not to extend but to diminish the range of thought." I recently
felt the weight of this Orwellian ethos when many of my students sent emails to inform me, and perhaps warn me, that my name appears on the
Professor Watchlist, a new website created by a conservative youth group known as Turning Point USA. I could sense the gravity in those email
messages, a sense of relaying what is to come. The Professor Watchlist's mission, among other things, is to sound an alarm about those of us within
academia who "advance leftist propaganda in the classroom." It names and includes photographs of some 200 professors. The Watchlist appears to be
consistent with a nostalgic desire "to make America great again" and to expose and oppose those voices in academia that are anti–Republican or
express anti–Republican values. For many black people, making America "great again" is especially threatening, as it signals a return to a more
explicit and unapologetic racial dystopia. For us, dreaming of yesterday is not a privilege, not a desire, but a nightmare. The new "watchlist" is
essentially a new species of McCarthyism, especially in terms of its overtones of "disloyalty" to the American republic. And it is reminiscent of
Cointelpro, the secret F.B.I. program that spied on, infiltrated and discredited American political organizations in the '50s and '60s. Its goal of "outing"
professors for their views helps to

Research Paper On George Orwell

  • 1. Research Paper On George Orwell Mack Allen Mr.Booth Period 6 English 12/3/14 Author Study of George Orwell George Orwell was a literary tactician who won two major awards because of hia advanced and intriguing use of propaganda. At first glance, his books appear to be stories about animals, however, they contain much deeper and influential meanings. Orwell is most recognized for his portrayal of dystopian societies and how they parallel present society. Through intense allegories, Orwell unintentionally crafted novels that are applicable to the totalitarian government systems prevalent in many advanced societies today. His dystopian societies have influenced many on history and government alike, giving it timeless qualities. Born as Eric Arthur Blair,George Orwell was an extremely skilled novelist, critic, journalist, and essayist capable of spreading his thoughts through incredible literary propaganda. Orwell was born on July 25, 1903 in Bengal, India. He moved to England at a young age with his mom shortly after his father died. Orwell was first publicly recognized for his writing when a poem that he wrote at age eleven appeared in a local newspaper. Orwell was well educated through many reputable English academies that he was able to attend through hard–earned scholarships. After education, Orwell traveled back to India, where his grandma lived, and joined the police. While on a work leave due to catching a deadly disease in India, Orwell decided to quit his police career and devote his life to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Analysis Of George Orwell 's 1984 Essay Heavy oppression from a powerful government can be overwhelming and burdening. Citizens suffocate under the rules and regulations and are denied freedoms that should be entitled. When it comes down to this, there are many who prefer to not rock the boat, or do not even see the oppression happening. However, there are a selected few that fight the authority. George Orwell used his skillful techniques to create a dystopian novel that describes his nightmare vision of a possible future society. This work is remembered today to warn citizens to be conscious as to what is around us, what is controlling us, and where our hope should be. The novel, 1984, written by George Orwell has opened reader's eyes on the power–hungry political systems forcing oppression, while rebelling against these governments in search of hope, love, freedom, and uses an impressive skill of timelessness in his writing to make a powerful impact still studied to this day. An omniscient power known as Big Brother rules over the province of Oceania. The word itself, Oceania, sounds promising and delightful. To the citizens, there is no other province; it is believed to be the best and only. This territory is broken into three classes: the Inner Party, Outer Party, and meaningless Proles. The small, ruling Inner Party has the others unknowingly brainwashed. They are programmed into following orders and rules with fear of consequence otherwise. The citizens even have an official language, newspeak, which they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. 1984 By George Orwell Analysis Throughout the novel 1984 by George Orwell, there were underlying messages presented to the reader regarding many issues. Issues such as free will, freedom to believe in what you wish, and the liberty to express oneself, are some of the issues addressed by the novel. The author, George Orwell, takes away all the simple rights of the people existing in a future world to present the audience with an idea of what life could be like without these rights. One could say that Orwell presents many themes in the novel but the strongest being: stand up for your rights. Earth has changed, there are now three countries: Eastasia, Eurasia, and Oceania which are all ran with a totalitarian system of government. Technology hasn't exactly advanced but there are now telescreens, screens meant to track a citizen's every move, and microphones, meant to hear every utter, in each and every home. A citizen of this future environment is meant to obey every whim of that of the higher class, otherwise known as the Inner Party. The Inner Party controls everything from articles in newspapers,to posters on the streets, to telecasts on telescreens, and even to the facts in history books. At the drop of a hat the entire history of a country can be changed simply because the ruling class tells the workers to do so. All the workers and citizens in the country are to believe...show more content... If people are scared to stand up for what they believe in horrific things will happen such as that in the novel. Citizens were ripped of their own thoughts, personalities, ideas, dreams, and anything else that makes one unique simply because the government was able to slowly take all of it away. One should never allow their rights to be stolen from them even if it would mean risking life, because it could have only taken a few people to solve what is now the problem of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. 1984 George Orwell Analysis In George Orwell's 1984, the Brotherhood is the covert, anti–government organization headed by Emmanuel Goldstein. In my opinion, the Brotherhood does not exist. Its existence in Oceania is to ferret out would–be traitors and any forms of insurrection. The Brotherhood is a meticulous fabrication of the Party and its existence serves as a means of cementing the Party's own doctrines. The idea of the Brotherhood is instilled in everyday life in Oceania. The Party needs a malicious opponent for the people to project their hate upon while also using the organization as a way of keeping citizens loyal to their regime. Love for Big Brother is concomitant in hate for The Brotherhood and Emmanuel Goldstein. O'Brien –who pretends to be a member of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' Orwell ' Essay Born Erick Arthur Blair, Orwell disregarded his birth name and changed it to George Orwell. After Orwell changed his name, he transitioned from a supporter of the British imperial to a literary political rebel. Orwell lived in India in his younger years, and later attended a preparatory boarding school in 1911 on the Sussex Coast. Orwell did not come from a rich family but a hardworking family. His mother was a French extraction in India and his father was a minor British official in the Indian Civil Service. In preparatory school, Orwell was known to be a brilliant, poor student, and was treated differently than the middle–class students. Growing up, he was shy and an ill–tempered boy who told his stories through autobiographical essays and satire stories. In 1922, Orwell won two scholarships to England 's leading schools, Winchester and Eton. He chose to attend Eton, and once graduated, he decided to follow his family's hardworking tradition. Parallel to his father, Orwell moved to Burma and became an Assistant District Superintendent in the Indian Imperial Police. From boyhood, he always wanted to become a writer, and with realization of the forced British Imperial Political System amongst the Burmese people he felt ashamed of his position; therefore, Orwell expressed his memories and reactions of imperial rule in his novel Burmese Days and autobiographical essays, "A Hanging" and "Shooting an Elephant," all classics of metrical exposer. In 1927, Orwell decided not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. George Orwell 1984 Analysis While George Orwell's book is nearly 70 years old, the novel is still relevant today in the discussion of Big Brother, in relation to fake news, and politics. Many conspiracy theories have been developed over time as technology has advanced, and the concern of how far the government can reach into our civil liberties with the Patriot Act seem to be an underlying theme in the novel 1984. The imbalance of social classes is also frightening similar to 1984 and society today. Winston Smith is living in a world of dystopia, where the government is using propaganda, catchy tabloids, and Hollywood entertainment to distract, defend, and convince its citizens that their reality is true, sound familiar? • 7. Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' Orwell ' Essay Across the world, History instructors educate their students with fundamental facts about wars dating back to 2700 BCE and so forth, and also the affirmative or cynical aftermath of costs, alliances, and materialistic items relating to the wars. However, a handful of teachers bypass and omit the most interesting parts of warfare, such as the development of citizens during and after these vicious conflicts. Author, George Orwell, seeks to find the effects of citizens in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Orwell witnessed "nightmarish atrocities committed by fascist political regimes," (1984) on citizens of Spain, Germany, and the Soviet Union. The government of Spain, the Soviet Union, and Germany captured "tens of thousands of civilians and refugees who [died] in concentration camps and prisons" (Process of Extermination). These vicious acts lead Orwell to fear the idea of a totalitarian society. Moreover, Orwell wrote 1984 to warn people of the dangers associated with a totalitarian society, because he believed that one–day history would repeat itself. Furthermore, Orwell includes his vision of "a post–atomic dictatorship in which every individual would be monitored ceaselessly by means of the telescreen [that] seemed terrifyingly possible" (1984). In addition to the stalking telescreens, Orwell introduces the effectiveness of thought control. Orwell uses characters and organizations such as The Party, who controls its citizens' thoughts, as well as their feelings, to show Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' Orwell ' Synopsis 1984 by George Orwell takes place in London, which is in a totalitarian country called Oceania and is about a man named Winston Smith who is an irrelevant member of the ruling party, or the "Party." He is very frustrated about the Party's great oppression because it controls everything from language to the nation's history. Thoughts against the country, or "thoughtcrimes", are considered illegal, one of the worst crimes, and punishable by death. The Party forces people to refrain from using all the words relating to rebellion in a language called Newspeak. The Party also does not allow sex or any form of individualism, and it monitors people through cameras, or "telescreens," to see if they are doing anything illegal and against the Party. 1984 begins with Winston having frustrations about the Party's totalitarian control. He then writes about his frustrations as rebellious thoughts in an illegal diary that he privately keeps since no one is allowed to write down thoughts. At his work at the Ministry of Truth, he has to modify historical records to the Party's satisfaction. During his work he sees a gorgeous dark–haired girl walking by that he absolutely hates and worries that she could report a thoughtcrime against Winston to the "Thought Police," a group of government officials that specifically monitors thoughtcrimes. He also notices a man named O'Brien who is a member of the Party, but Winston likes him because he believes he is against some of the Party's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Analysis of George Orwell's 1984 Analysis of George Orwell's 1984 War Is Peace. Freedom Is Slavery. Ignorance Is Strength. The party slogan of Ingsoc illustrates the sense of contradiction which characterizes the novel 1984. That the book was taken by many as a condemnation of socialism would have troubled Orwell greatly, had he lived to see the aftermath of his work. 1984 was a warning against totalitarianism and state sponsored brutality driven by excess technology. Socialist idealism in 1984 had turned to a total loss of individual freedom in exchange for false security and obedience to a totalitarian government, a dysutopia. 1984 was more than a simple warning to the socialists of Orwell's time. There are many complex philosophical issues buried deep within...show more content... This state of constant surveillance demands complete conformity among the population. In Oceania, there are no laws, but non–conformity is punished by death. The thought police are an omnipresent force of the government, weeding out non–conformists and making them disappear on a regular basis. Even a slight inflection in the voice or a look of the eye can be construed as thoughtcrime. Propaganda, terror, and technology are the tools of the state, used to coerce and control the thoughts and actions of the populace. Reality is denied on a regular basis if it is non–consistent with party doctrine. The main character of the novel, Winston Smith, said that "freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2=4."(Orwell,69)In fact, if the party said that 2+2=5, the population would believe this to be truth. History is actually rewritten on a daily basis so as to appear consistent with party doctrine. The enemy of today becomes the enemy of yesterday, poverty becomes progress, war becomes peace, and slavery becomes freedom. This concept of denying reality in the face of obvious contradiction is known as doublespeak. It is central to the philosophy of Ingsoc, and is the greatest tool of the government's mind–control agenda. Winston Smith, the tragic non–conformist main character works as a member of the party. His job is to rewrite newspaper records Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Literary Analysis Of 1984 By George Orwell The essay your about to read is a literary analysis of the book "1984 by George Orwell" it was written in 1948 as a thriller. Winston Smith is the main character of this story followed by two characters "Julia and O'Brien." The book starts off with main character Winston being very frustrated with what is called the "Party" lead by a man named "Big Brother" hints the saying "big brother is watching you" from "George Orwell's worst fear" stated by express.co.uk. the book takes you for a ride through what the author believes will happen by the year 1984 he stats that Winston has a obsession with defining the party's rules. "Newspeak" being one of these laws meaning only the party can put what is the truth for them which keeps the people with trust in them for they rely on the party. "Big Brother is Watching You" also meaning surveillance which is every where in Oceania the mostly used way by the party is the "telescreen" most commonly know as the television. There's one in every building in Oceania they only serve two purposes one being monitoring and the other being propaganda the party uses the two way screens to view what people are doing in there homes and almost anywhere else. Even small things as facial expressions can be seen by the party to monitor all citizens. Only the high up party members have the option to turn them off for a shot period of time. Children are also used to monitor there parents and to report back to there "deviations". With surveillance this high no one could show any time of negatively toward the party for the "Thought Police" would for sure be on to them. • 12. What Is The Tone Of 1984 By George Orwell In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Winston Smith is a character plagued by an oppressive party that controls and monitors its entire population. On a journey to meet a young girl in the countryside, Winston's mood, setting and point of view are used with Orwell's diction and imagery to portray a complex tone. Describing Winston as apprehensive and nervous throughout the beginning of the chapter because he does not know what is going to happen and he is anxious to meet this new girl but fearful for his own existence. The start of chapter two symbolizes a shift in between earlier parts of the book by supplying readers with a new setting and a new set of challenges for Winston to overcome. It begins as Winston cautiously "picked his way...show more content... Standing at the entrance, he notices that the "bluebells were so thick underfoot that it was impossible not to tread on them" signifying a contrast between this untouched society and the inner city. The bluebells resemble untouched nature and without any influence from anything but the sun, and Winston resembles Big Brother and the party infecting and killing off everything creative as they "tread" on their way. Winston continues to be uncertain of himself as he has a "vague idea" to gather flowers to present to the girl when they met. He is not sure if she will come, but knows if she does, he would like to be prepared. While picking flowers a sound at his back ""froze him" because he did not know whether it was the patrols or the girl. Further illustrating Winston's guilt as he freezes while being caught in the act of rebellion like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. As he continues to pick the bluebells to avoid looking guilty "a hand fell lightly on his shoulder" confirming that the girl has helped alleviate some of his menacing thoughts. The fact that the hand "fell lightly" contrasts with Big brother, the party's harsh rule and how it has driven Winston into the ground. • 13. 1984 George Orwell Analysis "If you want to keep a secret, you must first hide it from yourself." In George Orwell's "1984," in order for your privacy to not be invaded not only do you need to hide things from people but from yourself as well. "1984" is a story about a dystopian society where people are watched and controlled by technology and are forced to believe what the Party and Big Brother want them to. The privacy issues in 1984 relating to the big idea of manipulation and control, are relevant in social media, video surveillance, and the ability to use propaganda to control our thoughts. Social media; one of the most popular, battery wasting, and manipulative use of the internet that is controlling society's every move. The Party in 1984, however, chooses to take your thoughts and information as they please just for the purpose of power, "Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing" (266). Basically, this means that the Party uses their knowledge of you to change you, and invade your mind, kind of like how a celebrity can use their influence to make you want or do something.. I interpret this to mean that once the Party has already invaded your thoughts, and know all of your information, they can choose to "cure" you by making you...show more content... In "1984," Orwell writes, "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH." In other words, this is one of the Party's big Double–Speak slogans, used to persuade people to believe in their rules, just people did during the Holocaust, to either join Hitler's side or to go against it. I infer this to mean that by using manipulation and persuasion, the government is able to make us think about things and/or believe them. To sum up, people are able to be controlled and manipulated by propaganda and persuasion, in 1984 and our society Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. George Orwell 1984 Analysis Within reading the first ten pages of 1984 by George Orwell, some of the major themes have become evident. My first impression was that Oceania is ruled by a dystopian government that oppresses the people. Most of Oceania is populated by the poor. The main character, Winston Smith, lives in Victory Mansions. On page one it is said that in Winston's apartment that, "The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and rag mats." Winston didn't bother taking the lift because, "even at the best of times it was seldom working,...". At the end of the hall was a large poster of Big Brother, which could be seen from all floors of the apartment complex. The eyes of Big Brother seemed to be following you wherever you went. The recurring quote of Big Brother is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU," which ran beneath the poster on the wall. "WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH," ...show more content... The words are significant to the novel due to how largely they are written on the side of the Ministry of Truth. On page ten we learn about the Two Minute Hate. It is a short film that is shown every day. The Two Minute Hate serves as propaganda which is supposed to cause the people to feel hatred towards the enemies of Oceania. The Two Minute Hate also gives the citizens a sense of National pride when the face of Big Brother appears on the screen. During the Two Minute Hate we come across two people who also work within the Ministry. One of them is a girl who Winston comes to dislike due to the uneasiness he feels in her presence. We also cross paths with a man named O'Brien. The goals of this draft is to clarify the summary in my own words with no opinions. Also, providing enough information about the main points of Orwell's essay. Based on this draft, I see the strengths falling under the main points of each paragraph and the introduction paragraph. However, the weaknesses are to clarify more in each paragraph. In other words, to elaborate more so the reader can understand better. Since my previous draft, I made a few changes in this essay. These changes include editing a couple of sentences and adding politics in the introduction. These modifications are made in order to conform the requirements of this assignment. My questions are, "Where should I clarify more?" and "Where do you see any opinions?". Summary of "Politics and the English Language"...show more content... Orwell analyzes that the English language is full of irrational thoughts and is what causing people to have more absurd understandings. In most cases, political writings are commonly seen as poor quality scripts by the vagueness in our vocabulary. Orwell argues in order to advance from these irrational thoughts, an individual may manage to ponder more precisely. As well, the writers may avert these bad tendencies if they prompt to move through the obstacles. Throughout his essay, Orwell provides five passages that distribute into two aspects: "staleness of imagery" and "lack of precision". Also, he contributes other factors of lousy writing. In the next few paragraphs, George Orwell amplifies these components of bad Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. George Orwell 1984 Analysis George Orwell's book 1984 is the gift that keeps on giving for those that find dissent with their government. This book paints a bleak picture of a totalitarian government that lies to, spies on and generally abuses its citizens. "The themes in this novel have become a major part of modern culture, as have terms such as big brother and doublespeak" (Staff Writers, 2010). We even have a show on American television called "Big Brother" where contestants are watched and scrutinized by cameras that are mounted throughout the living space. When the Ramones released their first album in 1976 they were considered to be one of the first punk rock bands. Punk rock itself piggybacks off of the notions posited in Orwell's 1984. • 17. Rhetorical Analysis Of 1984 By George Orwell The want to communicate with others is instinctual to all animals; communication is necessary to survive. As infants, humans coo, gurgle, and cry to communicate their immediate needs to their providers. However, the provider does not exactly know what their child needs, due to the child's inability to explain their distress through words. As the child develops and learns to speak, this communication barrier is broken. Words, even in their most pure and basic form, are used for the sole purpose of expression. However, expressing oneself can have many goals and outcomes. In his treatise Rhetoric, Aristotle writes about using words to express one's self for the sole purpose of persuading an audience. In his novel, 1984, George Orwell uses the...show more content... During this time, Germany had many financial issues, which caused tension throughout the country. Also during this time, the Jewish community held most of the country's money. Using these two ideas, Hitler convinced the Germans that their financial issues were due to the Jewish community (Wistrich). This, although negative, is an example of using syllogisms and, ultimately, Logos, to appeal to an audience. Not to mention, Hitler appealed to the already present feeling of hatred towards the Jewish community, which is an example of Pathos. Although more than a thousand years after Aristotle's time, his philosophy on rhetoric still can be applied towards many public speakers. This proves that Aristotle's views on the use of words in order to persuade are significant to language and history, as a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. 1984 By George Orwell Analysis The strongest people are poor, starving, and treated like animals. In 1948, author George Orwell wrote the dystopian novel 1984. In 1984, Orwell created a world without freedom of speech, motion, and thought to portray an idea of our world with totalitarian power. In the book, it follows a member of the Outer Party named Winston, and his fight to keep his freedom of thought through love, rebellion, and secrecy. Throughout the book, it portrays three important themes, War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. The statement, "Ignorance is Strength" is a deep meaning throughout George Orwell's 1984 due to the jocundity of the Proles, the rigid rules and expectations of both the Inner and Outer party, and Big Brother's strive...show more content... Big Brother knows this, which is why it tries to toil order to control everything it can. Big Brother even controls the propaganda put up for the war, in which one slogan said, "'Who controls the past', ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (37). Big Brother creates itself to be a God like figure, interminable and the most important aspect of citizens' lives. They control their people down to their intense thoughts and feelings, as said by Winston, "The terrible thing that the Party had done was to persuade you that mere impulses, mere feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world" (165). Big Brother creates rules and expectations to prevent people from feeling that Big Brother is absurd. They create laws such as the Anti Sex law, "What was more important was that sexual privation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war fever and leader worship" (134). Big Brother's strive for totalitarian power means that it is all Big Brother can focus on. They cannot worry about little things such as starving their entire population or creating a false image, all they can focus on is world domination. Big Brother's demand for power makes it much more of a lesser value than the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Analysis Of George Orwell 's 1984 Those familiar with George Orwell's "1984" will recall that "Newspeak was designed not to extend but to diminish the range of thought." I recently felt the weight of this Orwellian ethos when many of my students sent emails to inform me, and perhaps warn me, that my name appears on the Professor Watchlist, a new website created by a conservative youth group known as Turning Point USA. I could sense the gravity in those email messages, a sense of relaying what is to come. The Professor Watchlist's mission, among other things, is to sound an alarm about those of us within academia who "advance leftist propaganda in the classroom." It names and includes photographs of some 200 professors. The Watchlist appears to be consistent with a nostalgic desire "to make America great again" and to expose and oppose those voices in academia that are anti–Republican or express anti–Republican values. For many black people, making America "great again" is especially threatening, as it signals a return to a more explicit and unapologetic racial dystopia. For us, dreaming of yesterday is not a privilege, not a desire, but a nightmare. The new "watchlist" is essentially a new species of McCarthyism, especially in terms of its overtones of "disloyalty" to the American republic. And it is reminiscent of Cointelpro, the secret F.B.I. program that spied on, infiltrated and discredited American political organizations in the '50s and '60s. Its goal of "outing" professors for their views helps to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
