The 1950's and 60's were a frightening time to live in for African American's. It was time that was full of hate and bigotry. An era where hate ran so
deeply through the veins of people in the South and the roots and history of the land they walked on. In Mamie Till and Christopher Benson's
book "Death of Innocence", Till was described as someone who was "always into something. Among so many other things he still was committed
to helping me." (Death of Innocence: Chapter 8). Mamie also describes him as someone who lived life with a sense of urgency and anxiety. She
felt that maybe he felt this way because of how much he had been through as a child with being sick. Mamie felt that maybe he felt his families
over protectiveness and in the book Mamie refers to Emmett as "two hundred percent boy" because he had to fit "twice as much life into half the
time" (Chapter 8 Page 1). Emmett Till was a prominent victim of this hate. His mother Mamie was changing jobs and income was not what it

After determining the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and without performing an autopsy, Emmett Till's body was released by the Mississippi
police to the custody of his family. Unbeknownst to Emmett's mother, Mamie, a quick funeral was planned locally in Mississippi, despite her wishes
of having his body brought back to their hometown of Chicago. Mississippi officials wished to bury the body as quickly as possible.

In the Mississippi during the 1950's American history was filled with extreme racism. They judge individuals on the shade of their skin and what they
look like. Emmett till was just a young 14–year–old teenage boy who didn't know or understand racism. Africa American's never had police on their
side they were simply forgotten and missed treated. Violence in the south was ignored because nobody wanted to get involved and become a target.
Emmet till death spark national attention and because of that the civil rights movement happened given equal opportunity. He changed the way people
think about racial problems.

Emmett Till was a fourteen year old African American boy who was brutally beaten and murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman.
Emmett Till was from Chicago, Illinois and went to visit his uncle and cousin in Money, Mississippi(all). He had polio as a child which caused him
to have a stutter. He lived in a working class neighborhood. Chicago was not so segregated. Money, Mississippi, however, was very segregated. He
was killed by the woman;s husband and brother in–law. His friends dared him to ask the white woman out. She alleged that he made lewd advances
and that he sauntered out of the store. Her husband and brother in–law gouged out his eye, shot him in the head, and tied him to a cotton gin fan.
