Polygamy Research Paper
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints is another interesting church that I researched more in depth as well. This religion like Scientology
has had people question it at times, and have a different view of it than it deserves. One topic in particular is Polygamy, which I will discuss later on.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints or LDS for short, began with unlike many religions a young boy. This boy named Joseph Smith was
only 14–years–old in 1820 when he had a question like most of us had at some point or another. He wanted to find the religion that was right for him,
so one day he prayed outside his home near a grove of trees and before him God and Jesus Christ appeared. Jesus told Joseph Smith that the church that

Introduction Polygamy is a highly debated topic among many people across the world and largely misunderstood. Polygamy is commonly defined as a
marital system in which one man is married concurrently to more than one woman. The word "polygamy" actually translates from the Greek language
to mean, "often married." The correct term for a man with multiple wives is called, "polygyny." Over the years, the terms have been intertwined, and
now polygamy is synonymously known for a man married to multiple wives.[1] This lifestyle is a multicultural...show more content...
Authorities employ this strategy to break up the polygamous arrangement. The government offers these women large, subsidized apartments to
encourage them to leave their polygamous lifestyles. They also can receive a ten year residence permit issued to other foreign residents. Polygamous
families normally are only eligible for a one year permit that must be renewed each and every year. This makes it difficult for them to find
employment or travel internationally. Polygamy is present in France, but as we now know it is not an accepted form of marriage.
Authorities continue to advocate against the polygamous lifestyle and are trying to exterminate this form of marriage all together.
Pros for a Polygamous Lifestyle Worldwide Polygamy in Africa has been the tradition for hundreds of decades. It is still an acceptedfamily style and
makes sense for their circumstances. In a culture where infant mortality is outrageously high and the average woman gives birth to fifteen children,
most of which do not survive, it is one of the best ways for a man to ensure the continuation of his family. It also allows for a woman who may be
barren to still be a mother figure and care for children. This also ensures the husband that should his wife not be able to produce him a child, he has
other wives who can and the family name can continue to be carried on. In a traditional African community life is hard. It is an

Polygamy: Article Analysis
Content and Coverage The audience for this newspaper article is general and directed to the overall population of men and women. The article does
not provide anything out of depth that requires a higher understanding, it is a brief review on a documentary on polygamy. The information provided
in the article is secondary in nature because it provides an analysis. The newspaper article provides a brief description of the documentary, 'Bitter

Why Is Polygamy Morally Wrong
The debate about whether plural marriage, which is also referred to as polygamy, is morally right or wrong has been a topic of interest for quite
some time. There are people on both sides of the debate, some thinking it is right, while others thinking it is wrong. My goal of this paper is to support
the claim that plural marriages, or polygamy, is morally wrong. Polygamy can lead to child abuse and neglect. Not in all, but in most cases, males are
the more dominate gender and typically marry younger women, and so the children suffer from having a mother who may not be mature enough to
care for a family and several children. Polygamy is also wrong because it limits the father's involvement and investment in the marriage and family.
First and foremost, it is important to understand what polygamy or plural marriage is. The online Merriam–Webster dictionary...show more content...
Virtue ethics focuses on what makes a someone a good person. Aristotle explains that a person is a good person if and only if he or she performs
his/her function well. Someone who participates or is involved in a polygamous relationship is not performing their function as a spouse or parent
well. Many think that a spouse or parent who devotes their love and attention to their spouse or family is performing their function well. In a
monogamous marriage, they are able to focus on their one spouse and family. There is no worry that the father may not know his child's name. In
polygamous relationships, one is not performing their function well, both as a parent and as a spouse. Abuse and neglect becomes more common with
the children, and that is not how a parent should treat a child. If Aristotle's thought on virtue ethics follows, then in polygamous relationships, people
are viewed as not good people. This is concluded simply because a parent is not performing their function of being a parent

Polygamy in Islam has restrictions

Polygamy, in general, came in the world before Islam came to be. There's polygamy, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygamy means a spouse can have
multiple spouses. Polyandry means a women can have multiple husbands. Polygyny means a man can have multiple wives. Polygyny would be the
right term to use since it's the only one allowed in Islam. In Islam, there are two types of marriages permitted, monogamy and limited polygyny. Limited
polygyny comes with some restrictions stated in the Quran. In Islam, marriage is a sign of God's power and glory. Marriage is completing half the
faith. The Quran says "from His signs is that He has created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may get peace [and tranquility] through
them; and He placed between you love and mercy. In these are signs for the people who reflect" (Surah Ar– Room, 30:21). Ideally, monogamy is the
main form of marriage in Islam. Polygyny is a provision in marriage that comes with restrictions and certain circumstances. The majority of Muslim
men are in monogamous marriages. Polygamy didn't first exist in Islam. It had existed long before Islam came in the world. The Bible says that, the
grandson of Adam, Lamech, "took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah" (The Book of Genesis, 4:19).
In the earliest days in human history, polygamy has existed. Besides

Why Polygamy Should Remain Illegal
"Polygamy: Every one who practises or enters into or in any manner agrees or consents to practise or enter into any form of polygamy, or any kind
of conjugal union with more than one person at the same time, whether or not it is by law recognized as a binding form of marriage, or (b)
celebrates, assists or is a party to a rite, ceremony, contract or consent that purports to sanction a relationship. If found guilty of an indictable offence
and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years." (Criminal Code,1985) The criminal code provides a penalty of up to 5 years in prison
but prosecutions are rare. Despite the religious beliefs, polygamy should remain illegal and should be enforced strictly. Polygamy brings on various

Recent news has come out that 12 and 13 year old girls were moved from Canada to the US to marry widely known polygamous, Warren Jeffs who
now is in jail named. Currently, Jeffs is facing allegation he married the 3 girls through 2004 and 2005 while he was at the age of 48. (Keller, 2011)
Consequently, women are highly affected by polygamy due to its tradition of marrying young, abusive relationships and deep jealousy.
Children are currently a major part of polygamy. By far children suffer the most in polygamy and its extremely difficult for children to escape
polygamy if they would like to. These communities feel losing one children they are losing all the people they would have as their offspring.
Polygamy needs to remain illegal to prevent them from experiencing being neglected, abused and taught wrongful gender equality. Children who are
raised in polygamy often do not have much say in what happens in their lives. Due to the various amount of wives the man in the polygamous
relationship might have depends, on how many children that will be born. Children could have a lot of insecurities due to the fact some children might
be subject to favouritism. With so many children it would be hard to make everyone feel special without

Polygamy Should Be Legalized in The United States
Should polygamy be legalized in United States? Love and marriage is traditionally defined by the union of two people. However, one may argue that
there are overwhelming benefits of a nontraditional marriage. It's often quoted that it takes a village to raise a child, not just one mother and one father
in a household. This view is supported within polygamy. Polygamy is defined as "A marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one
mate at the same time" (Marriam–Webster). This practice of polygamy goes back for most of man's recorded history and is mentioned in most major
religions. Even though most religions do not practice polygamy anymore it is still apart the Islamic and Mormon doctrine. It is illegal in the United
States to marry someone while still lawfully married to another person. The outlaw of polygamy is a violation of a citizen's Constitutional right to
practice their religion. For those who currently practice outside the law, this creates a constitutional midpoint where they may be imprisoned for
exercising their rights. Although it may be illegal in the United States, polygamy is a principle aspect of several religions; it supports women and
children and it helps reduce the number of unmarried women. The First Amendment of the United States gives citizens the freedom to practice religion
and freedom of speech. As human beings we should have the right to practice our religious beliefs without fear

Polygamy Vs Same Sex Marriage
In this world there is many different types of marriages. Marriages vary between different cultures and different generations throughout the world.
Today, people can be married to someone of the same sex, where as many generations ago same sex marriage was not even a thought. Different
cultures look at marriage differently than others. Marriage is defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a
personal relationship. In the paper I will be explaining three different types of marriage, monogamy, same–sex marriage, and polygamy. Monogamy is a
form of marriage were the individuals only have one partner of opposite sex in a lifetime, or at one time. This marriage is also known as the more
traditional marriage and is the most common because it builds and withstands trust between two individuals. According to CNN, ""People feel safer
and they feel more trusting. They feel like they can depend on their partner," Kaslow said. "I think that we can make choices in a different way than
[other] mammals and think through the consequences of things," (Pawlowski). There are four aspects of monogamy and the first one is martial

Currently there are 40,000 practicing polygamists in the United States most reside in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. As of 2011 there are two
highly investigated polygamist cults living in the states of Utah and Texas. In Utah, Warren Jeffs is prophet and facing charges of bigamy,
accomplice to rape, enforcing marriages of young women, and incest. After separating from the LDS church the polygamist's sects have turned from
religious filled gatherings to arrange underage marriages, power hungry men, politically influenced prophets, and form cults. The beliefs of these
followers have changed drastically throughout the years. Once women were free to receive an education and they are only allowed to finish high
school if they are not married off beforehand. A survivor of Utah cult, Carolyn Jessop was married at the age of 18 and had to witness the cult's abusive
progress. "The choice was freedom or fear. I was thirty–five and desperate to flee from polygamy, the only world I had ever known. I came from six
generations of polygamists and was part of a sect known as Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints" (14) (Jessop, 2007). Carolyn was able to
escape but many women are too afraid to, and believe they will be separated from their path of God if they choose too. These women have been
brain washed from birth and do not know any other way to live, the verbal and physical abuse is normal to them. Being

Polygamy : A Socially Sanctioned Marriage
Marriage is a publicly sanctioned union between two or more individuals. Marriage can be defined by how many people are involved, their sex and the
roles they carry on. Polygamy is a well–known type of marriage and can be found in today's society. Polygamy is a culturally sanctioned marriage
involving more than two people. Most Americans today are used to monogamy, which is believed to be the traditional form of marriage between two
individuals. Many Americans think that the majority of marriages practice monogamy but, studies show that polygamy outnumber monogamous
cultures, therefore there are more marriages that practice polygamy than monogamy (Grabianowski).

For example, Oprah did an interview with a wife in a polygamist relationship, in the interview Valerie stated, "We have had jealousies and there
have been those times and we can 't sugarcoat it and say that, 'Oh, it 's so perfect and we love it and we love everyone. ' You know, we all have our
hard times just like any other people... We have a really good system where we work together with one another" (Ling). This shows that jealousy
plays a huge role in polygamist marriages. To avoid complications many polygamist families, create a schedule to regulate which nights the husband
sleeps and spends time with each wife. A polygamous family can create and unusual environment for children to be raised in. It could influence them
to be in a polygamous relationship as well as expect men to be dominate in their future relationship. Being raised in a polygamous family can also
create insecurities and conflict with females as they are exposed to it daily from their mothers.
Polygamy in the United States is illegal in all states including Utah where most polygamists are located. "Few polygamists try to legally marry more
than one wife. They may marry other wives in church ceremonies, but no marriage license exists" (Grabianowski). Because of the strict laws against
polygamy, polygamist make sure that they do not officially marry more than one wife at a time. They usually marry and then divorce all but one wife
and continue living and sleeping with them all. In the interview with

Polygamy Is The Most Common Form Of Polygamy
There are many problems within our society, polygamy has been a problem since the 19th century and still is today. Polygamy is the practice of
having more than one spouse at a time. Polygyny is the most common form of polygamy, consists of one man has multiple wives (Buck, 2012).
Polygamy is illegal in the United States, Canada and many other countries around the world. In the 1800s, under the direction of its founder Joseph
Smith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints (LDS) began to practice polygamy. Members of the LDS Church, also known as Mormons,
believed that Smith was the prophet of God and they must follow his teachings if they wanted to go to heaven. After Smith's death, the new prophet,
Brigham Young, began publically teaching the practice of polygamy (Guiora, 2010). In order to escape persecution for their religious practice of
polygamy, the LDS Church moved the Utah, which is where a large amount of the polygamous community lives today. The United States government
was opposed to the practice of polygamy. The U.S. opposed polygamy so vehemently, that Utah was denied statehood until the practice was declared
illegal. In 1862, Congress passed the first act that criminalized polygamy, the Morrill Act for the Suppression of Polygamy. The Morrill Act states,
"every person having a husband or wife living, who shall marry any other person...shall be adjudged guilty of bigamy" (Guiora, 2010, p. 395). This Act
was not effective, because the witnesses needed

There are two well known forms of polygamy, both of which are still presently practiced in numerous cultures globally, polygyny and polyandry.

In industrialized societies, it is something that has been made illegal, and is considered deviant. When most people think of polygamy they think of
polygyny, the marriage of one man with multiple wives, and endless children. Here in the United States the most common occurrence of polygamy was
in the 1800s, through the Mormon religion, and more specifically the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter–Day Saints. Through the reading of the
Bible, the leader of the Latter–Day Saints church, Joseph Smith, had revelations that encouraged him take a second wife as many of the members of
the Old Testament had done. The rest of the United States reacted negatively to polygamy and Congress passed several laws prohibited polygamy.
However, Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws because they believed it was within their right to do so based on the Bill of
Rights which protected freedom of religion (Embry 2016).
Polygamy has been illegal in the United States since 1878, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that freedom to practice the Mormon religion did not
extend to having multiple wives (Reynolds v United States 1878). Federal law does not allow prospective immigrants who practice polygamy into the
United States. Although, there has been polygamy found in New York among some immigrants from countries in which

It has also been said that polygamy undermines the institution of marriage and the idea of devotion and giving oneself wholly to their spouse. It is not
possible for one man to give himself wholly to four different women which means each wife is really only married to one fourth of a man. The
husband is often accused of being selfish and greedy because he is not satisfied with his family and he feels the need to go out and find another new

This might seem appealing to some working women who juggle children, work, and a spouse. The question still remains, however, what happens
when the working woman returns home? The regular tradition of dinner might be kept intact, along with the dishwashing, and after dinner television

of passing the husband around. In addition, sometimes, claims Joseph, "with the demands of career and the literal chasing after the needs of a toddler,
all I want to do is collapse into bed and sleep" (770). Therefore, busy and exhausted, wife A can choose to be with her husband on the days when she is

polygamy.
Joseph presents the reader with a picture of a functional polygamous family. There is a definite mother and father presence, a set routine and even

her off her feet, and propose marriage in a rush of romance. This dream of love is instilled in cultural values and beliefs that affect the child throughout

As in the hunter–gatherer societies of previous ages, women are responsible for gathering supplies needed for the family survival, cooking, caring for
the sick, and nurturing in general.
Issues with Monogamy Monogamy is difficult to uphold, and there are many reasons for its failure. "Marital infidelities, the pursuit of younger women,
the 'bimbo' and 'trophy wife' syndromes – all are essential breaches of the monogamous social contract." (Tucker, 1993, p. 35) Both men and women
commit the crime of infidelity. Once the crime is committed, it is often difficult to maintain the monogamous relationship, and the union ends. Physical
and natural urges are best suppressed within a monogamous marriage to protect the security of the relationship. Another issue with monogamy is the
rise of women's rights and movements to further the possibilities for women in the working world. As women become more empowered, they find
themselves dissatisfied with their monogamous partners. "The rise of single motherhood is basically the expression of female discontent with
monogamy." (Tucker, 1993, p. 36) Women are now breaking out of the traditional roles and are able to provide for themselves what traditionally they
had to rely upon men to provide. Therefore, the main function of the male as provider is not as attractive to women anymore, and therefore, not enough

The Effects Of Polygamy On Children 's Life
Introduction
Polygamy has been around for hundreds of years and has evolved into a normal practice in some countries. No one actually knows the full origin of
polygamy but it is most common in places where activity centred on farming which requires lots of manpower, Africa being a prime example. High
levels of infant mortality may be a factor. When many children do not survive past the age of five a family needs more than one child–bearer to be
economically viable. Then there is the chance of war, when a lot of men die, having more than one wife boosts the population the easiest. The more
wives a man had the more military and political alliances he could forge. Wealth and status became determined in the number of wives a man had. A
larger family became a source of pride. Polygamy exists in three specific forms. There is polygyny, which is where a man has multiple wives.
Polyandry is another form of polygamy where a woman has multiple husbands. The last one is group marriage, where the family unit consists of
multiple husbands and multiple wives. Anthropologists treat serial monogamy, in which divorce and remarriage occur, as a form of polygamy as it
also establishes a series of households that continue to be tied by shared paternity and shared income. Ambiguity may arise when the broad term
"polygamy" is used with reference to a specific form of polygamy. Additionally, different countries may or may not include all forms in their laws on
polygamy. In relation to the

Polygamy Research Paper

  • 1. Polygamy Research Paper The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints is another interesting church that I researched more in depth as well. This religion like Scientology has had people question it at times, and have a different view of it than it deserves. One topic in particular is Polygamy, which I will discuss later on. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints or LDS for short, began with unlike many religions a young boy. This boy named Joseph Smith was only 14–years–old in 1820 when he had a question like most of us had at some point or another. He wanted to find the religion that was right for him, so one day he prayed outside his home near a grove of trees and before him God and Jesus Christ appeared. Jesus told Joseph Smith that the church that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Ethics- Is Polygamy Ethical? Essay Is Polygamy Morally Ethical? Group 1: Brittney Brown, Kasandra Foster, Kelsay Helm, and Alicia Grant PHI 105 Online Professor Pitre April 22, 2012 Introduction Polygamy is a highly debated topic among many people across the world and largely misunderstood. Polygamy is commonly defined as a marital system in which one man is married concurrently to more than one woman. The word "polygamy" actually translates from the Greek language to mean, "often married." The correct term for a man with multiple wives is called, "polygyny." Over the years, the terms have been intertwined, and now polygamy is synonymously known for a man married to multiple wives.[1] This lifestyle is a multicultural...show more content... Authorities employ this strategy to break up the polygamous arrangement. The government offers these women large, subsidized apartments to encourage them to leave their polygamous lifestyles. They also can receive a ten year residence permit issued to other foreign residents. Polygamous families normally are only eligible for a one year permit that must be renewed each and every year. This makes it difficult for them to find employment or travel internationally. It is still an acceptedfamily style and makes sense for their circumstances. In a culture where infant mortality is outrageously high and the average woman gives birth to fifteen children, most of which do not survive, it is one of the best ways for a man to ensure the continuation of his family. It also allows for a woman who may be barren to still be a mother figure and care for children. This also ensures the husband that should his wife not be able to produce him a child, he has other wives who can and the family name can continue to be carried on. In a traditional African community life is hard. It is an

The article does not provide anything out of depth that requires a higher understanding, it is a brief review on a documentary on polygamy. The information provided in the article is secondary in nature because it provides an analysis. The newspaper article provides a brief description of the documentary, 'Bitter Honey,' that it is discussing. The information regarding the topic of polygamy is very general (Webster). For someone writing a paper on any giving topic they should look for more in–depth information. General information doesn't provide a full understanding of a certain topic. • 5. Why Is Polygamy Morally Wrong The debate about whether plural marriage, which is also referred to as polygamy, is morally right or wrong has been a topic of interest for quite some time. There are people on both sides of the debate, some thinking it is right, while others thinking it is wrong. My goal of this paper is to support the claim that plural marriages, or polygamy, is morally wrong. Polygamy can lead to child abuse and neglect. Not in all, but in most cases, males are the more dominate gender and typically marry younger women, and so the children suffer from having a mother who may not be mature enough to care for a family and several children. Polygamy is also wrong because it limits the father's involvement and investment in the marriage and family. First and foremost, it is important to understand what polygamy or plural marriage is. The online Merriam–Webster dictionary...show more content... Virtue ethics focuses on what makes a someone a good person. Aristotle explains that a person is a good person if and only if he or she performs his/her function well. Someone who participates or is involved in a polygamous relationship is not performing their function as a spouse or parent well. Many think that a spouse or parent who devotes their love and attention to their spouse or family is performing their function well. In a monogamous marriage, they are able to focus on their one spouse and family. There is no worry that the father may not know his child's name. In polygamous relationships, one is not performing their function well, both as a parent and as a spouse. Abuse and neglect becomes more common with the children, and that is not how a parent should treat a child. If Aristotle's thought on virtue ethics follows, then in polygamous relationships, people are viewed as not good people. This is concluded simply because a parent is not performing their function of being a parent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Polygamy in Islam has restrictions Hebah Gaballa March 6, 2015 Dr. T. Vivian Religious Studies 316 Polygamy, in general, came in the world before Islam came to be. There's polygamy, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygamy means a spouse can have multiple spouses. Polyandry means a women can have multiple husbands. Polygyny means a man can have multiple wives. Polygyny would be the right term to use since it's the only one allowed in Islam. In Islam, there are two types of marriages permitted, monogamy and limited polygyny. Limited polygyny comes with some restrictions stated in the Quran. In Islam, marriage is a sign of God's power and glory. Marriage is completing half the faith. The Quran says "from His signs is that He has created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may get peace [and tranquility] through them; and He placed between you love and mercy. In these are signs for the people who reflect" (Surah Ar– Room, 30:21). Ideally, monogamy is the main form of marriage in Islam. Polygyny is a provision in marriage that comes with restrictions and certain circumstances. The majority of Muslim men are in monogamous marriages. Polygamy didn't first exist in Islam. It had existed long before Islam came in the world. The Bible says that, the grandson of Adam, Lamech, "took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah" (The Book of Genesis, 4:19). In the earliest days in human history, polygamy has existed. Besides Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Why Polygamy Should Remain Illegal "Polygamy: Every one who practises or enters into or in any manner agrees or consents to practise or enter into any form of polygamy, or any kind of conjugal union with more than one person at the same time, whether or not it is by law recognized as a binding form of marriage, or (b) celebrates, assists or is a party to a rite, ceremony, contract or consent that purports to sanction a relationship. If found guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years." (Criminal Code,1985) The criminal code provides a penalty of up to 5 years in prison but prosecutions are rare. Despite the religious beliefs, polygamy should remain illegal and should be enforced strictly. Polygamy brings on various legal...show more content... They are looking into changing the law so it doesn't affect children from age 12–17 who marry into polygamy. (Canada Polygamy laws upheld, 2011) Recent news has come out that 12 and 13 year old girls were moved from Canada to the US to marry widely known polygamous, Warren Jeffs who now is in jail named. Currently, Jeffs is facing allegation he married the 3 girls through 2004 and 2005 while he was at the age of 48. (Keller, 2011) Consequently, women are highly affected by polygamy due to its tradition of marrying young, abusive relationships and deep jealousy. Children are currently a major part of polygamy. By far children suffer the most in polygamy and its extremely difficult for children to escape polygamy if they would like to. These communities feel losing one children they are losing all the people they would have as their offspring. Polygamy needs to remain illegal to prevent them from experiencing being neglected, abused and taught wrongful gender equality. Children who are raised in polygamy often do not have much say in what happens in their lives. Due to the various amount of wives the man in the polygamous relationship might have depends, on how many children that will be born. Children could have a lot of insecurities due to the fact some children might be subject to favouritism. With so many children it would be hard to make everyone feel special without Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay On Polygamy Polygamy Should Be Legalized in The United States Should polygamy be legalized in United States? Love and marriage is traditionally defined by the union of two people. However, one may argue that there are overwhelming benefits of a nontraditional marriage. It's often quoted that it takes a village to raise a child, not just one mother and one father in a household. This view is supported within polygamy. Polygamy is defined as "A marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one mate at the same time" (Marriam–Webster). This practice of polygamy goes back for most of man's recorded history and is mentioned in most major religions. Even though most religions do not practice polygamy anymore it is still apart the Islamic and Mormon doctrine. It is illegal in the United States to marry someone while still lawfully married to another person. The outlaw of polygamy is a violation of a citizen's Constitutional right to practice their religion. For those who currently practice outside the law, this creates a constitutional midpoint where they may be imprisoned for exercising their rights. Although it may be illegal in the United States, polygamy is a principle aspect of several religions; it supports women and children and it helps reduce the number of unmarried women. The First Amendment of the United States gives citizens the freedom to practice religion and freedom of speech. As human beings we should have the right to practice our religious beliefs without fear Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 10. Polygamy Vs Same Sex Marriage In this world there is many different types of marriages. Marriages vary between different cultures and different generations throughout the world. Today, people can be married to someone of the same sex, where as many generations ago same sex marriage was not even a thought. Different cultures look at marriage differently than others. Marriage is defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship. In the paper I will be explaining three different types of marriage, monogamy, same–sex marriage, and polygamy. Monogamy is a form of marriage were the individuals only have one partner of opposite sex in a lifetime, or at one time. This marriage is also known as the more traditional marriage and is the most common because it builds and withstands trust between two individuals. According to CNN, ""People feel safer and they feel more trusting. They feel like they can depend on their partner," Kaslow said. "I think that we can make choices in a different way than [other] mammals and think through the consequences of things," (Pawlowski). There are four aspects of monogamy and the first one is martial monogamy refers to the marriage of only two people. The second aspect of monogamy is social monogamy and that refers to two partners living together, having sexual relations with one another, and cooperating in acquiring basic resources such as food, money, and shelter. • 11. The Pros and Cons of Polygamy Essay Polygamy is the practice where a man is married to one or more wife at the same time. Currently, Polygamy is illegal in all 50 states but not every country. The United States is the only country that bans Polygamy constitutionally and yet still has families living in secret polygamist marriages. These families have had to lie and hide to save themselves from being arrested and broken up from their families. Without the patriarch, most of these women do not know how to survive financially on their own. This affects both the women and their children. Currently there are 40,000 practicing polygamists in the United States most reside in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. As of 2011 there are two highly investigated polygamist cults living in the states of Utah and Texas. In Utah, Warren Jeffs is prophet and facing charges of bigamy, accomplice to rape, enforcing marriages of young women, and incest. After separating from the LDS church the polygamist's sects have turned from religious filled gatherings to arrange underage marriages, power hungry men, politically influenced prophets, and form cults. The beliefs of these followers have changed drastically throughout the years. Once women were free to receive an education and they are only allowed to finish high school if they are not married off beforehand. A survivor of Utah cult, Carolyn Jessop was married at the age of 18 and had to witness the cult's abusive progress. "The choice was freedom or fear. I was thirty–five and desperate to flee from polygamy, the only world I had ever known. I came from six generations of polygamists and was part of a sect known as Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints" (14) (Jessop, 2007). Carolyn was able to escape but many women are too afraid to, and believe they will be separated from their path of God if they choose too. These women have been brain washed from birth and do not know any other way to live, the verbal and physical abuse is normal to them. Being Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Polygamy : A Socially Sanctioned Marriage Marriage is a publicly sanctioned union between two or more individuals. Marriage can be defined by how many people are involved, their sex and the roles they carry on. Polygamy is a well–known type of marriage and can be found in today's society. Polygamy is a culturally sanctioned marriage involving more than two people. Most Americans today are used to monogamy, which is believed to be the traditional form of marriage between two individuals. Many Americans think that the majority of marriages practice monogamy but, studies show that polygamy outnumber monogamous cultures, therefore there are more marriages that practice polygamy than monogamy (Grabianowski). Polygamy can differ in many different cultures. In the Islamic tradition a...show more content... For example, Oprah did an interview with a wife in a polygamist relationship, in the interview Valerie stated, "We have had jealousies and there have been those times and we can 't sugarcoat it and say that, 'Oh, it 's so perfect and we love it and we love everyone. ' You know, we all have our hard times just like any other people... We have a really good system where we work together with one another" (Ling). This shows that jealousy plays a huge role in polygamist marriages. To avoid complications many polygamist families, create a schedule to regulate which nights the husband sleeps and spends time with each wife. A polygamous family can create and unusual environment for children to be raised in. It could influence them to be in a polygamous relationship as well as expect men to be dominate in their future relationship. Being raised in a polygamous family can also create insecurities and conflict with females as they are exposed to it daily from their mothers. Polygamy in the United States is illegal in all states including Utah where most polygamists are located. "Few polygamists try to legally marry more than one wife. They may marry other wives in church ceremonies, but no marriage license exists" (Grabianowski). Because of the strict laws against polygamy, polygamist make sure that they do not officially marry more than one wife at a time. They usually marry and then divorce all but one wife and continue living and sleeping with them all. In the interview with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Polygamy Is The Most Common Form Of Polygamy There are many problems within our society, polygamy has been a problem since the 19th century and still is today. Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse at a time. Polygyny is the most common form of polygamy, consists of one man has multiple wives (Buck, 2012). Polygamy is illegal in the United States, Canada and many other countries around the world. In the 1800s, under the direction of its founder Joseph Smith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints (LDS) began to practice polygamy. Members of the LDS Church, also known as Mormons, believed that Smith was the prophet of God and they must follow his teachings if they wanted to go to heaven. After Smith's death, the new prophet, Brigham Young, began publically teaching the practice of polygamy (Guiora, 2010). In order to escape persecution for their religious practice of polygamy, the LDS Church moved the Utah, which is where a large amount of the polygamous community lives today. The United States government was opposed to the practice of polygamy. The U.S. opposed polygamy so vehemently, that Utah was denied statehood until the practice was declared illegal. In 1862, Congress passed the first act that criminalized polygamy, the Morrill Act for the Suppression of Polygamy. The Morrill Act states, "every person having a husband or wife living, who shall marry any other person...shall be adjudged guilty of bigamy" (Guiora, 2010, p. 395). There are two well known forms of polygamy, both of which are still presently practiced in numerous cultures globally, polygyny and polyandry. These practices take place in societies where it is important to have either more men or more women in a families' household based on the kind of environment they reside in. When most people think of polygamy they think of polygyny, the marriage of one man with multiple wives, and endless children. Here in the United States the most common occurrence of polygamy was in the 1800s, through the Mormon religion, and more specifically the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter–Day Saints. Through the reading of the Bible, the leader of the Latter–Day Saints church, Joseph Smith, had revelations that encouraged him take a second wife as many of the members of the Old Testament had done. The rest of the United States reacted negatively to polygamy and Congress passed several laws prohibited polygamy. However, Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws because they believed it was within their right to do so based on the Bill of Rights which protected freedom of religion (Embry 2016). Polygamy has been illegal in the United States since 1878, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that freedom to practice the Mormon religion did not extend to having multiple wives (Reynolds v United States 1878). Federal law does not allow prospective immigrants who practice polygamy into the United States. The husband, Cody Brown, has 4 wives: Meri, Janelle, Christine, and the latest addition Robyn. The number of polygamists in North America, estimated at 50,000 or more, is doubling every decade. When a man is married to more than one woman at the same time it is called polygany and when a woman is married to more than one man at the same time it is called polyandry. However, if a woman agrees to marry into such a family she should be prepared for these feelings. It has also been said that polygamy undermines the institution of marriage and the idea of devotion and giving oneself wholly to their spouse. It is not possible for one man to give himself wholly to four different women which means each wife is really only married to one fourth of a man. The husband is often accused of being selfish and greedy because he is not satisfied with his family and he feels the need to go out and find another new woman and more children to add to it. Polygamy also has many negative effects on the children. Often times the wives will be upset and in a bad mood because they are missing the husband or are jealous for some reason and the kids suffer from it. Also it is hard for the children to make friends when they know about there lifestyle. Perhaps some of the kids don't believe in this lifestyle and don't want to be a part of it, well they don't have a choice until they are of age. • 17. Polygamy Essay When someone "pops the question", he is normally knelt on one knee, the paradigm of a prince charming. The illusion is shattered when the proposal is not solely performed to one woman, but many. Then, it is not just one bride. It is one of an array of brides. Polygamy, obviously, still exists today. Though no religion mandates it, and it is, in fact, illegal in the United States, it is still a realized phenomenon. Popular occidental culture has veered away from this marriage style. Now a day, a typical westerner prefers monogamy. The emphasis is on the couple, not the several. Both essays, My Husband's Nine Wives by Elizabeth Joseph and In Defense of Polygamy by B. Aisha Lemu, depict different situations involving polygamy, through a ...show more content... The whole situation is beneficial for all participants. This might seem appealing to some working women who juggle children, work, and a spouse. The question still remains, however, what happens when the working woman returns home? The regular tradition of dinner might be kept intact, along with the dishwashing, and after dinner television time. The routine deviates from the normal when it comes time to hit the proverbial sack. Do the math, one husband, many wives, and one main bed. How does this special time and place get divided up? "Sleeping hours" are previously "booked" by the wives. This amounts to an equitable way of passing the husband around. In addition, sometimes, claims Joseph, "with the demands of career and the literal chasing after the needs of a toddler, all I want to do is collapse into bed and sleep" (770). Therefore, busy and exhausted, wife A can choose to be with her husband on the days when she is least busy, and not feel obliged to meet her husbands needs when she would rather pass out. In this way, Joseph seems to successfully argue the case of polygamy. Joseph presents the reader with a picture of a functional polygamous family. There is a definite mother and father presence, a set routine and even marital bliss. I cannot envision this unraveling quite so ideally in actual practice. • 18. Speech On Polygamy Polygamy is that which involves a person possessing more than one spouse. When a man is married to more than one woman at a time, it is termed as polygamy, and when a woman is married to more than one man at one particular time, is termed to be polyandry. Bigamy is the act where a person who is already married, marries another. Organizations around the world have often described polygamy as a human rights abuse. The United Nations Human Rights Committee considered polygamy to be violating the dignity of women and hence against various international covenants. Polygamy was always practiced in ancient India but whether or not it was popular in public opinion is doubtful. Those of higher social and economic stature usually performed it. If ancient Indian history is studied, it is seen that the rich and the powerful practiced polygamy, while the...show more content... He then eloped with a woman named Deepa after three years. • 19. Monogamy Versus Polygamy Essay SSC 101–2 Research Paper Monogamy versus Polygamy Nobody ever said marriage was easy. Marriage is a vow to remain honest, true, and faithful, and a promise to always love and cherish the chosen one. In many cultures worldwide, young girls dream of the day that her knight in shining armor will come to her, sweep her off her feet, and propose marriage in a rush of romance. This dream of love is instilled in cultural values and beliefs that affect the child throughout his or her upbringing, which result in her expectation of her one–and–only. There are, however, cultures in which young girls have a different expectation for the moment that marriage will come for her. Rather than a dream of love, acceptance of an understanding of a...show more content... As in the hunter–gatherer societies of previous ages, women are responsible for gathering supplies needed for the family survival, cooking, caring for the sick, and nurturing in general. Issues with Monogamy Monogamy is difficult to uphold, and there are many reasons for its failure. "Marital infidelities, the pursuit of younger women, the 'bimbo' and 'trophy wife' syndromes – all are essential breaches of the monogamous social contract." (Tucker, 1993, p. 35) Both men and women commit the crime of infidelity. Once the crime is committed, it is often difficult to maintain the monogamous relationship, and the union ends. Physical and natural urges are best suppressed within a monogamous marriage to protect the security of the relationship. Another issue with monogamy is the rise of women's rights and movements to further the possibilities for women in the working world. As women become more empowered, they find themselves dissatisfied with their monogamous partners. "The rise of single motherhood is basically the expression of female discontent with monogamy." (Tucker, 1993, p. 36) Women are now breaking out of the traditional roles and are able to provide for themselves what traditionally they had to rely upon men to provide. Therefore, the main function of the male as provider is not as attractive to women anymore, and therefore, not enough to keep Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. The Effects Of Polygamy On Children 's Life Introduction Polygamy has been around for hundreds of years and has evolved into a normal practice in some countries. No one actually knows the full origin of polygamy but it is most common in places where activity centred on farming which requires lots of manpower, Africa being a prime example. High levels of infant mortality may be a factor. When many children do not survive past the age of five a family needs more than one child–bearer to be economically viable. Then there is the chance of war, when a lot of men die, having more than one wife boosts the population the easiest. The more wives a man had the more military and political alliances he could forge. Wealth and status became determined in the number of wives a man had. A larger family became a source of pride. Polygamy exists in three specific forms. There is polygyny, which is where a man has multiple wives. Polyandry is another form of polygamy where a woman has multiple husbands. The last one is group marriage, where the family unit consists of multiple husbands and multiple wives. Anthropologists treat serial monogamy, in which divorce and remarriage occur, as a form of polygamy as it also establishes a series of households that continue to be tied by shared paternity and shared income. Ambiguity may arise when the broad term "polygamy" is used with reference to a specific form of polygamy. Additionally, different countries may or may not include all forms in their laws on polygamy.
