A Incident That Changed My Life
Fiction Mckenna Crase A Incident That Changed My Life
prologue
On December 26th I was going on a road trip to Tennessee with my parents and my sister, Alison. We were in Ohio when it happened....
It was a windy, snowy winter when we were in Ohio. On December 26th there was black ice on the road. My dad was going a bit too fast. We slid on it
and went off the road. I woke up three days later. When I woke up I found out the rest of my family was dead. The doctor in my hospital was named
Zach. I just knew he was going to be my knight in shining armor. Oh yeah I forgot to tell you, my name is Alisa. It took me ages to pay off my
hospital bill. After I got better that doctor and me started hanging out. We had one date and then another and then another. One day we went to this
AMAZING restaurant. It was as good as hot chocolate on a cold day.
Four years later we got married. I know right romantic. After what felt forever, we got to say our vows. "When I first saw, him my first thought was,
'Wow he's was a hot tamale'. He is a very special guy and I am glad to be the very lucky girl to marry him. I love him so much. I will always love him,
forever and ever." said Alisa. "Okay, first of all, how gorgeous is she in this dress. I mean seriously this is as good looking as they can get. They also
can't get anymore caring and loving, special and the most amazing

The Most Embarrassing Incident in My Life
Life is full of unexpected incidents. Some anticipated stories do not happen the way we have always wanted. Some days, nights, ways and fights
keep repeating in our life. However, it can be pretty funny to look back to the past where many embarrassing moments occur in our days and nights,
leaving an abiding memory that cannot be possibly forgotten. The same goes to me as I'm one of the creatures created by God. Scientists call me
Homosapien but the world would rather address me as a human being. There are many embarrassing incidents in my life dictionary and most of them
are still playing in my mind. Oh, what a memory. There was one day when I accidentally humiliated myself in front of my friends in class. It is not
that I was doing...show more content...
However, my expectation was wrong. The next day, I found a letter under my desk. It was in a pink envelope. Judging from the look of the hand
writing, I already knew that it was from Tyra. My heart beat faster unconsciously and my brain stopped functioning. I opened the letter and the last
words from it caught my attention. It said: I Do Not Have Any Feelings Towards You, Ben. The words broke my heart into pieces. At that particular
time, I was once again

Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves To Death
Neil Postman's novel Amusing Ourselves to Death seeks to look at media and how it shapes and defines culture. Postman has been cited as one of
the major media theorists and a great philosopher of his time. To understand the book fully it is important to remember where it came from. The idea
was born out of a speech Postman gave about the book 1984 and A Brave New World. It takes the ideas behind these novels and looks at them in a
contemporary light, where the "Big Brother" is our own television sets. Television is obviously a form of media and it delivers a message. However,
that message and media has its own agenda, to above all entertain. Postman believes that television has become the primary media–metaphor and by

Classroom Incidents
Classroom Incidents Name University Classroom Incidents A classroom incident is an unexpected event that occurs in a classroom causing disturbance
or presenting a safety risk. A classroom incident can affect a teacher, a student or all the members of the classroom. There are many critical incidents
that have occurred between teachers and students or among students. A critical classroom incident either spoils the student–student relationship or the
teacher–student relationship. Past classroom incidents can offer important lessons that can be utilized in adopting the right ways of managing similar
incidents in the future (Levin & Nolan, 2010). Incident related to cheating Adam reported his classmate Moses to the class teacher...show more

This critical incident had interfered with the right values of the student–student relationship. However, the same incident still has a positive side. The
differences between the students were established. Brown had a desire to establish his own status although he followed the wrong route. His ego could
be used to show that he had a low–esteem. He hid behind his rudeness and pretence to retain a sense of respect from the rest of the students. Brown's
behavior had a positive message to the other students. Since he avoided the other students, he had no friend. A friend would have helped him with the
assignment. Lessons learned from the incident. The student was an attention seeker. He exploded once he got the attention of the entire class. The
teacher was wise enough not to react harshly. The situation could have been worse if the teacher had lost his tempers. The class could have been
treated to a more dramatic scene. It is important to note that students come from different backgrounds. Different students also have different levels of
self esteem. Teachers should try to know the kind of students they are dealing with in order to handle them accordingly. There is a need to engage the
students in order to know their grievances. Had the students reported Brown's behavior in advance, the incident could have been avoided. According
to Dixie (2003), counseling is always applicable as a good method to discard bad morals. Brown could have been assisted through

Essay On The Curious Incident
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time is a 2003 mystery novel by British writer Mark Haddon. Its title quotes the fictional detective
Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1892 short story "Silver Blaze". Haddon and The Curious Incident won the Whitbread Book Awards for
Best Novel and Book of the Year,
The novel is narrated in the first–person perspective by Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15–year–old boy who describes himself as "a mathematician
with some behavioural difficulties" living in Swindon, Wiltshire. Although Christopher's condition is not stated, the book's blurb refers toAsperger
syndrome, high–functioning autism, or savant syndrome. In July 2009, Haddon wrote on his blog that "Curious Incident is not a book about
Asperger's....if anything it's a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. The book is
not specifically about any specific disorder," and that he, Haddon, is not an expert on autism spectrum disorder or Asperger syndrome.
Haddon added, in the conversation with Terry Gross, "I have to say honestly that I did more research about the...show more content...
But it also provides profound insight into a disorder–autism–that leaves those who have it struggling to perceive even the most basic of human
emotions. In so doing, The Curious Incident leaves its readers with a greater appreciation of their own ability to feel, express, and interpret emotions.
This mainstream literary success made its way to the top of the New York Times bestseller list for fiction at the same time it was being touted by
experts in Asperger's syndrome and autism–spectrum disorder as an unrivaled fictional depiction of the inner workings of an autistic teenage

Coney Island – Paper #1
Due Sept 14
A. At the turn of the 20th century radical social changes began to define the American culture, and a major part that factored into these new changes
was the creation of the amusement park. According to John F. Kasson's Amusing The Million:Coney Island at the Turn of the Century, theamusement
park (the amusement parks at Coney Island especially) played a major role in the shift of lifestyle, morals, and overall attitudes of our society. John
Kasson's Amusing the Million has many societal and cultural examples of what it was like to live in a bustling urban setting in the 1920's. The turn of
the century It also provides a rich, detailed view of why Coney Island is regarded as a cultural hotspot in the 1920's. This amusement park/attraction
transitioned America from the Victorian culture of the past to a more inclusive, less restrictive culture on which our culture today is based on. This
culture is highlighted by new social and moral codes, and also a new mentality. Kasson says that when the 20th century began the American elite took it
upon themselves to take control of the ragtag urban public and took leadership of the culture that was being formed. These members of the elite "built
museums, symphonies, and libraries to institutionalize a formal cultural life based upon moral integrity and self–control" (Kasson p. 4). Although these
reformers tried to grow the population that reinforced their ideas

Adventurous Moment Essay
Two Vacation Spots Adventure! Everyone probably has an adventurous moment they will remember. When I explain my adventurous moment to
friends, I never forget the scenarios that happen between 2010 and 2012. Fortunately, I visited two different cities in two different States during this
time doing the same activity, carrying out the same fun experience from an internship, but had different results and likes. Initially, in the summer of
2010 I visit Folly Beach, and then summer 2011 was Pensacola Beach, and finally was Folly Beach again during summer 2012. Not only do both
beaches clinch personal memories in my head, but both areas have something in common to pull your interest, as well as they differ such that you
can be able to choose where to spend a short vacation. Fortunately, it was a sales internship, a program with Varsity Company International during
which we'll sell educational books during the summer to make some money, and at the end of the summer the sales manager will choose one place
where all participants will go to celebrate success. Confidently, I became part of the program in 2010 and the memory wasn't impressive.
Unfortunately, 2010 memory wasn't the best due to the fact that Ruth Angelina was the closest friend I met during the program; I didn't generate
enough income to celebrate success and I was left in the cold at Folly Beach by Ruth. Courageously, I went back in 2011 and the memory wasn't the
best either. Following the 12–week program, I was sick

Amusing Ourselves To Death Neil Postman Analysis
In 1985, when Neil Postman penned, Amusing Ourselves to Death, CNN, and the twenty–four–hour news cycle existed in its infancy and
televangelism was still unscathed by the Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals. A B–movie actor sat in the Oval Office. Conceivably most
importantly, television, the love child of the photograph and the telegraph, had reached maturity to become fully entrenched in American culture after
thirty some years (p. 100). Newscasters, preachers, and politicians had become celebrities. The information presented on the tube was deficient in
meaningful content and lacked context. Nevertheless, the public's level of amusement rode high. Television's capacity to manipulate public persona and
information on the news, in religion, and in politics creates a vaudeville atmosphere on these modes of public discourse.
First, when it comes to the news, Postman raises the fact that television is a business that sells its time in minutes and seconds. While the thirty–minute

Postman calls this anticommuncation, it abandons reason and logic, throws away the rules of sequence and contradiction. For Nietzsche this is
nihilism, for Freud represents schizophrenia in regards to the theater it is a little ditty called vaudeville. For an example, Postman cites the "Iranian
Hostage Crisis" still fresh in the minds of an early mid–eighties audience. Even though the crisis was on the news nightly for around a year, most
people had no knowledge of basic information about the Iranians. Yet, nearly everyone had an opinion, mostly based on the emotion based on watching
the news and "being informed". Perhaps this is better described as disinformation, not false or untrue, but fragmented, irrelevant and misleading. This is
the inevitable result of TV news packaging serious discourse as entertainment, a vaudeville

Traumatizing Experiences
Who would have thought that an innocent trip to the mall would cause me to have such a traumatizing experience, getting lost! It began on a
sunny day, my mother decided that she would take my siblings and I to the mall to look around. As we strolled around the crowded mall, we
advanced to the toy store. Rummaging through the toy filled Isles, a brand new toy caught my eye. As I began to examine it, I noticed my mom
had vanished! I frantically looked for her, sprinting down the mall. A woman just so happened to spot me alone and grabbed my hand, heading
towards the exit door! Not long after she took my hand, my mom saw me a started shouting my name. I ran to her as quick as my legs could carry me
and leaped into her arms! After that day I never

Amusement Park Ride Accident
In the late June of 2007, 13–year–old Kaitlyn Lassiter was riding the Superman Tower of Power in Six Flags Kentucky. The free–falling thrill ride,
featuring ski–lift style seating in which the riders faced outwards with their feet dangling in the air, was a ride in which the chairs ascended 230 feet
in the air before plunging back down to its platform at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. The ride had only climbed 20 feet in the air when
things took a tragic turn for the worst, and a large cable snapped from fatigue. Although the girl was able to pull the whipping cables away from
her face and neck, she couldn't stop them from severing both of her feet (SOURCE). This accident was just one of many that could have been
spotted and prevented before hand with a more thorough inspection of the machinery. While mobile rides used by traveling carnivals (rides that can
be disassembled and then reassembled again) are monitored and heavily inspected by both the Federal and state Governments, fixed rides, which
often haul their passengers up to 100 plus miles per hour, are currently only regulated by State and Local officials (SOURCE). While oversight by
State and Local governments are enough to keep most amusement rides safe enough for public use, there needs to be more federal oversight and
regulation of amusement parks because a significantly higher percent of accidents occur in parks with fixed rides than at ones with mobile rides, where

Neil Postman Amusing Ourselves To Death Analysis
Neil Postman; cultural critic, author, and teacher extraordinaire, spent his career warning and educating about the role technology was beginning to
play in society. He wrote all of his books, articles, and speeches by hand and reportedly never met a computer or typewriter that he liked. He also
never published an academic journal article due to his belief that his ideas were meant to be read by all, not exclusively a handful of scholars. In
today's age of technological overload, just thirty years after his most well–known book "Amusing Ourselves to Death," Neil Postman is revered as a
prophet as more and more of our media consumption becomes purely for entertainment purposes. According to Postman a metaphor is the way in
which our forms

Personal Essay: A Humorous Incident Analysis
When I first countered this question, I could thought of many things which matter to me most like my family, my friends, living a life according to my
own choices without playing blame games. Next day, when 1Aleppo came under the Syrian Army I couldn't fathom the atrocities being committed on
innocent lives. This incident provoked me to write my thoughts on facebook after a long period of time, texting my friends that we will organize a
charity event or solidarity march. It was this moment that I realized that helping people out of problems whenever possible, taking a stand for known–
unknown strangers matter most to me. I don't want to sound pessimistic but I am not hopeful regarding the future of this world– wars, endemic

Coney Island: Change At The Turn Of The Century
American culture changed at the turn of the century due to a challenging reestablished social order. Coney Island at the beginning of the twentieth
century had a profound impact on societal norms. Outside of Coney Island, women were often treated as inferior while men ruled the throne in nearly
all aspects of life. However, within Coney Island the gender gap was equalized. Coney Island served as a medium to a change in the traditional
mindset. Here, the hotels, amusement parks, and rides and events that the civilians encountered a display of immorality, fast pleasure and love for
profit. As Kasson states "At the turn of the century the nation was beginning a pivotal transition form an economy organized around production to one

Jane Addams along with some urban reformers could not wait to demolish Coney Island's "cheap commercial entertainment" and convert the site into a

Summary Of The Inciting Incident
Inciting Incident Molly sees Heather back at the lone gravestone. When Molly sees Heather, she instantly senses something is wrong; the warm
day suddenly sends chills down her back as she hears Heather talking to an unseen new "friend" named Helen. Molly is scared and yells at
Heather telling her to come home. Heather soon comes home and says that Molly was being mean to her, later she warns Molly that she shouldn't
keep spying on her or if she continues her new friend Helen will do something bad to them. The next day Heather runs off again, Molly finds her at
the remnants of a magnificent old house that had been burnt long ago.She hears Heather talking once again to the unseen friend. Molly thinks that
Heather is in danger and grabs her arm and drags her home where Molly is then scolded for "being mean to Heather" by Dave. Once at home, the
groundskeeper Mr. Simmons overhears what happened and warns the kids that the old house and the pond next to it are dangerous and aren't a good

The Memory of My Tragic Accident Essay
I opened my eyes to see, yet again, the irritating glare of the ceiling lights. The sickly green walls added to the nauseating clinical feeling. It is no
surprise I cannot "progress" enough to leave with such dismal surroundings. I regained most of my strength quickly after the accident but my memory
did not appear to be coming back. The doctors had said my accident had made national news. "Car accident...his wife in labour...memory may never
return...tragic accident". Simply an unfortunate case of wrong place and wrong time they said. The irony of the incident being we all ended up in
hospital. Since then I have been completely unable to recollect any of my past. I could not even remember my own name. Isabella Pyper. The sound

This must be home. I grabbed my rucksack and bounced eagerly the front porch. The man and the woman, my mother and father, helped take my
things to my room. I examined my room with a sense of familiarity: my small double bed pushed up against the far wall; my desk cluttered with
drawings; my wardrobe draped in multicoloured clothes; my shoes lazily strewn in heap beside the door. It felt familiar but no matter how hard I
tried I could not piece together any of my past. Frustrated, I kicked off my shoes and hopped onto my bed. I melted into the mountain of pillows and
blankets and took a deep breath inhaling the aroma of my rose scented perfume. It felt like heaven compared to those old–fashioned hospital beds. I felt
tired after the long journey home. It was late afternoon but I was sure I could afford a small nap before dinner. I flicked off the lights and closed
the curtains, stepping carefully towards my bed in the dark. I flopped onto my bed and closed my eyes for my mind required a much needed rest. I

face and my bare feet were pricked and oozing crimson blood. The forest was alive at night. Small creatures and animals flitted across the fallen
leaves. I could hear someone in the distance shouting my name. I saw a shadow. Something was coming towards me. The person who was shouting my

9/11 Tragic Incident
The act of an individual endangering and taking the life of another individual has become way too common in our world. No one is born into the
world as a violent person; however, it seems as if every day the media is covering a different incident involving a shooting or some type of tragic
event, leaving people in a constant state of fear. Newspaper headlines are covered with inexplicable events that lead us to believe that the world is
becoming an increasingly scarier place. How is it possible to enjoy life if some people may be afraid to leave their own houses after an unexpected,
tragic incident occurs? As a society, we have become so classically conditioned that it is common for traumatic events to affect individuals even long
after they...show more content...

I even took notice of how my own personal actions and behaviors have changed. When something out of the ordinary happens, such as an event like
this, it is no surprise that fear takes over our emotions. In some cases, the effects of a traumatic event can be never ending for some, and often times,
people are unable to cope with these emotions. With all the recent shootings, attacks, and traumatic events that are constantly happening in our world, I
believe that we live in a world of fear, and sometimes it is hard not

Amusing The Million Summary
"Amusing the Million" by John F. Kasson, is a book that presents the very cusp of modern social and economic culture pre WWI. The well cultured, but
often considered ostentatious influential groups instituted several other forms of recreational activities for the public to take part in, but because of the
sophisticated and banal nature of these undertakings, many of the people shunned them. John F. Kasson impacts his readers with his books on cultural
history that vary through a high and low volume of materials. Even though most of his work reflects his passion on the dynamics of a cultural society,
his interests and disciplines range from literature, visual arts to psychology and anthropology. As an author, he's wrote multiple titles such as
"Civilizing the Machine, Rudeness and Civility and The Little Girl Who Fought Depression". Kasson enjoys teaching both undergrad and...show more

When Coney Island opened in 1895, it was the prime example to show how people wanted to spend their free time. Kasson gives the reader an
understanding of the evolution of the nature of American entertainment via Coney Island, which was used by the American public as an escape from
the ridged societal expectations of moral integrity and long suffering that was imposed upon them by the leading powers during the time. Coney Island
represented an act of social rebellion that birthed a dichotomy of how Americans view and use entertainment. We can see even today the different kinds
of ways and reasons that people entertain themselves, whether it be a carefree carousal to momentarily distract themselves from the harsh realities of
the world, a calm and collected reflection of themselves and what is around them through media and art, or anything in between, it can be argued that
Coney Island was the beginning of all that we see today when it comes to American entertainment and even life. The amusement park was given praise

Amusing Ourselves To Death By Neil Postman
In the book "Amusing ourselves to death" Neil Postman is making an argument about the fact that humans could amuse themselves to death in their
lives.Even if when we think of death we think at something terrible,in his book this particular term is asociated with "amusament" which is a quite
unusual asociation of terms. At the beggining of the book the author is making a paralel between Orwell and Huxley. What is quite known about
these two is the fact that their ideas were different and the book "Amusing ourselves to death" states this ideas. What Orwell feared were those who
would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there whould be no one who would want to read
one.Orwell feared those who would deprive...show more content...
Postman thinks that all culture is a conversation, or more precisely a corporation of conversations, conducted in a variety of symbolic modes. His
attention here was on how forms of public discourse regulate and even dictate what kind of content can issue from such forms. He states the fact that
American Indians were using smoke signals but this particular type of conversation could not be very detailed for they could not communicate
philosophical arguments. But when you transmit information through smoke signals, writing or radio, the shape of a man becomes irrelevant. All that
matters are the ideas he states and the way he thinks. I think that if people could focus more on what a person has to say and less on how a person
looks we could actually learn something from each other and become more informed. Neil Postman states the fact that "how a person looks is quite
relevant on television. The grossness of a three hundred pound image, even a talking one, would easily overwhelm any logical or spiritual subtleties
conveyed by speech. For on television, discourse is conducted largely through visual imagery, which is to say that television gives us a conversation in
images, not words. The emergence of the image–manager in the political arena and the concomitant decline of the speech writer attest to the fact that
television demands a different kind of content from other media. You cannot do political philosophy on television. Its form works against the content".
Given to this, we could affirm that television changed the game and now images become more important than the information that is sent. People
would often remember images more quickly than information and this is quite sad given the fact that we should be more concerned with the news, not
the way they are submitted. Because of television people became superficial and stopped looking for information on their own, instead they

The Curious Incident Essay
Have you ever changed a lot over time or have you always stayed the same? Everyone changes or doesn't in different ways. "We cannot become what

A Incident That Changed My Life

  • 1. A Incident That Changed My Life Fiction Mckenna Crase A Incident That Changed My Life prologue On December 26th I was going on a road trip to Tennessee with my parents and my sister, Alison. We were in Ohio when it happened.... It was a windy, snowy winter when we were in Ohio. On December 26th there was black ice on the road. My dad was going a bit too fast. We slid on it and went off the road. I woke up three days later. When I woke up I found out the rest of my family was dead. The doctor in my hospital was named Zach. I just knew he was going to be my knight in shining armor. Oh yeah I forgot to tell you, my name is Alisa. It took me ages to pay off my hospital bill. After I got better that doctor and me started hanging out. We had one date and then another and then another. One day we went to this AMAZING restaurant. It was as good as hot chocolate on a cold day. Four years later we got married. I know right romantic. After what felt forever, we got to say our vows. "When I first saw, him my first thought was, 'Wow he's was a hot tamale'. He is a very special guy and I am glad to be the very lucky girl to marry him. I love him so much. I will always love him, forever and ever." said Alisa. "Okay, first of all, how gorgeous is she in this dress. I mean seriously this is as good looking as they can get. They also can't get anymore caring and loving, special and the most amazing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Most Embarrassing Incident in My Life Life is full of unexpected incidents. Some anticipated stories do not happen the way we have always wanted. Some days, nights, ways and fights keep repeating in our life. However, it can be pretty funny to look back to the past where many embarrassing moments occur in our days and nights, leaving an abiding memory that cannot be possibly forgotten. The same goes to me as I'm one of the creatures created by God. Scientists call me Homosapien but the world would rather address me as a human being. There are many embarrassing incidents in my life dictionary and most of them are still playing in my mind. Oh, what a memory. There was one day when I accidentally humiliated myself in front of my friends in class. It is not that I was doing...show more content... However, my expectation was wrong. The next day, I found a letter under my desk. It was in a pink envelope. Judging from the look of the hand writing, I already knew that it was from Tyra. My heart beat faster unconsciously and my brain stopped functioning. I opened the letter and the last words from it caught my attention. It said: I Do Not Have Any Feelings Towards You, Ben. The words broke my heart into pieces. At that particular time, I was once again Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves To Death Neil Postman's novel Amusing Ourselves to Death seeks to look at media and how it shapes and defines culture. Postman has been cited as one of the major media theorists and a great philosopher of his time. To understand the book fully it is important to remember where it came from. The idea was born out of a speech Postman gave about the book 1984 and A Brave New World. It takes the ideas behind these novels and looks at them in a contemporary light, where the "Big Brother" is our own television sets. Television is obviously a form of media and it delivers a message. However, that message and media has its own agenda, to above all entertain. Postman believes that television has become the primary media–metaphor and by that definition Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Classroom Incidents Classroom Incidents Name University Classroom Incidents A classroom incident is an unexpected event that occurs in a classroom causing disturbance or presenting a safety risk. A classroom incident can affect a teacher, a student or all the members of the classroom. There are many critical incidents that have occurred between teachers and students or among students. A critical classroom incident either spoils the student–student relationship or the teacher–student relationship. Past classroom incidents can offer important lessons that can be utilized in adopting the right ways of managing similar incidents in the future (Levin & Nolan, 2010). Incident related to cheating Adam reported his classmate Moses to the class teacher...show more content... This critical incident had interfered with the right values of the student–student relationship. However, the same incident still has a positive side. The differences between the students were established. Brown had a desire to establish his own status although he followed the wrong route. His ego could be used to show that he had a low–esteem. He hid behind his rudeness and pretence to retain a sense of respect from the rest of the students. Brown's behavior had a positive message to the other students. Since he avoided the other students, he had no friend. A friend would have helped him with the assignment. Lessons learned from the incident. The student was an attention seeker. He exploded once he got the attention of the entire class. The teacher was wise enough not to react harshly. The situation could have been worse if the teacher had lost his tempers. The class could have been treated to a more dramatic scene. It is important to note that students come from different backgrounds. Different students also have different levels of self esteem. Teachers should try to know the kind of students they are dealing with in order to handle them accordingly. There is a need to engage the students in order to know their grievances. Had the students reported Brown's behavior in advance, the incident could have been avoided. According to Dixie (2003), counseling is always applicable as a good method to discard bad morals. Brown could have been assisted through Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay On The Curious Incident The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time is a 2003 mystery novel by British writer Mark Haddon. Its title quotes the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1892 short story "Silver Blaze". Haddon and The Curious Incident won the Whitbread Book Awards for Best Novel and Book of the Year, The novel is narrated in the first–person perspective by Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15–year–old boy who describes himself as "a mathematician with some behavioural difficulties" living in Swindon, Wiltshire. Although Christopher's condition is not stated, the book's blurb refers toAsperger syndrome, high–functioning autism, or savant syndrome. In July 2009, Haddon wrote on his blog that "Curious Incident is not a book about Asperger's....if anything it's a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. The book is not specifically about any specific disorder," and that he, Haddon, is not an expert on autism spectrum disorder or Asperger syndrome. Haddon added, in the conversation with Terry Gross, "I have to say honestly that I did more research about the...show more content... But it also provides profound insight into a disorder–autism–that leaves those who have it struggling to perceive even the most basic of human emotions. In so doing, The Curious Incident leaves its readers with a greater appreciation of their own ability to feel, express, and interpret emotions. This mainstream literary success made its way to the top of the New York Times bestseller list for fiction at the same time it was being touted by experts in Asperger's syndrome and autism–spectrum disorder as an unrivaled fictional depiction of the inner workings of an autistic teenage Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Analysis Of Amusing The Million Patrick Reilly HIS–136–004 Coney Island – Paper #1 Due Sept 14 A. At the turn of the 20th century radical social changes began to define the American culture, and a major part that factored into these new changes was the creation of the amusement park. According to John F. Kasson's Amusing The Million:Coney Island at the Turn of the Century, theamusement park (the amusement parks at Coney Island especially) played a major role in the shift of lifestyle, morals, and overall attitudes of our society. John Kasson's Amusing the Million has many societal and cultural examples of what it was like to live in a bustling urban setting in the 1920's. The turn of the century It also provides a rich, detailed view of why Coney Island is regarded as a cultural hotspot in the 1920's. This amusement park/attraction transitioned America from the Victorian culture of the past to a more inclusive, less restrictive culture on which our culture today is based on. This culture is highlighted by new social and moral codes, and also a new mentality. Kasson says that when the 20th century began the American elite took it upon themselves to take control of the ragtag urban public and took leadership of the culture that was being formed. These members of the elite "built museums, symphonies, and libraries to institutionalize a formal cultural life based upon moral integrity and self–control" (Kasson p. 4). Although these reformers tried to grow the population that reinforced their ideas Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Adventurous Moment Essay Two Vacation Spots Adventure! Everyone probably has an adventurous moment they will remember. When I explain my adventurous moment to friends, I never forget the scenarios that happen between 2010 and 2012. Fortunately, I visited two different cities in two different States during this time doing the same activity, carrying out the same fun experience from an internship, but had different results and likes. Initially, in the summer of 2010 I visit Folly Beach, and then summer 2011 was Pensacola Beach, and finally was Folly Beach again during summer 2012. Not only do both beaches clinch personal memories in my head, but both areas have something in common to pull your interest, as well as they differ such that you can be able to choose where to spend a short vacation. Fortunately, it was a sales internship, a program with Varsity Company International during which we'll sell educational books during the summer to make some money, and at the end of the summer the sales manager will choose one place where all participants will go to celebrate success. Confidently, I became part of the program in 2010 and the memory wasn't impressive. Unfortunately, 2010 memory wasn't the best due to the fact that Ruth Angelina was the closest friend I met during the program; I didn't generate enough income to celebrate success and I was left in the cold at Folly Beach by Ruth. Courageously, I went back in 2011 and the memory wasn't the best either. Following the 12–week program, I was sick Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Amusing Ourselves To Death Neil Postman Analysis In 1985, when Neil Postman penned, Amusing Ourselves to Death, CNN, and the twenty–four–hour news cycle existed in its infancy and televangelism was still unscathed by the Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals. A B–movie actor sat in the Oval Office. Conceivably most importantly, television, the love child of the photograph and the telegraph, had reached maturity to become fully entrenched in American culture after thirty some years (p. 100). Newscasters, preachers, and politicians had become celebrities. The information presented on the tube was deficient in meaningful content and lacked context. Nevertheless, the public's level of amusement rode high. Television's capacity to manipulate public persona and information on the news, in religion, and in politics creates a vaudeville atmosphere on these modes of public discourse. First, when it comes to the news, Postman raises the fact that television is a business that sells its time in minutes and seconds. While the thirty–minute ...show more content... Postman calls this anticommuncation, it abandons reason and logic, throws away the rules of sequence and contradiction. For Nietzsche this is nihilism, for Freud represents schizophrenia in regards to the theater it is a little ditty called vaudeville. For an example, Postman cites the "Iranian Hostage Crisis" still fresh in the minds of an early mid–eighties audience. Even though the crisis was on the news nightly for around a year, most people had no knowledge of basic information about the Iranians. Yet, nearly everyone had an opinion, mostly based on the emotion based on watching the news and "being informed". Perhaps this is better described as disinformation, not false or untrue, but fragmented, irrelevant and misleading. This is the inevitable result of TV news packaging serious discourse as entertainment, a vaudeville Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Traumatizing Experiences Who would have thought that an innocent trip to the mall would cause me to have such a traumatizing experience, getting lost! It began on a sunny day, my mother decided that she would take my siblings and I to the mall to look around. As we strolled around the crowded mall, we advanced to the toy store. Rummaging through the toy filled Isles, a brand new toy caught my eye. As I began to examine it, I noticed my mom had vanished! I frantically looked for her, sprinting down the mall. A woman just so happened to spot me alone and grabbed my hand, heading towards the exit door! Not long after she took my hand, my mom saw me a started shouting my name. I ran to her as quick as my legs could carry me and leaped into her arms! After that day I never Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Amusement Park Ride Accident In the late June of 2007, 13–year–old Kaitlyn Lassiter was riding the Superman Tower of Power in Six Flags Kentucky. The free–falling thrill ride, featuring ski–lift style seating in which the riders faced outwards with their feet dangling in the air, was a ride in which the chairs ascended 230 feet in the air before plunging back down to its platform at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. The ride had only climbed 20 feet in the air when things took a tragic turn for the worst, and a large cable snapped from fatigue. Although the girl was able to pull the whipping cables away from her face and neck, she couldn't stop them from severing both of her feet (SOURCE). This accident was just one of many that could have been spotted and prevented before hand with a more thorough inspection of the machinery. While mobile rides used by traveling carnivals (rides that can be disassembled and then reassembled again) are monitored and heavily inspected by both the Federal and state Governments, fixed rides, which often haul their passengers up to 100 plus miles per hour, are currently only regulated by State and Local officials (SOURCE). While oversight by State and Local governments are enough to keep most amusement rides safe enough for public use, there needs to be more federal oversight and regulation of amusement parks because a significantly higher percent of accidents occur in parks with fixed rides than at ones with mobile rides, where heavy Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Neil Postman Amusing Ourselves To Death Analysis Neil Postman; cultural critic, author, and teacher extraordinaire, spent his career warning and educating about the role technology was beginning to play in society. He wrote all of his books, articles, and speeches by hand and reportedly never met a computer or typewriter that he liked. He also never published an academic journal article due to his belief that his ideas were meant to be read by all, not exclusively a handful of scholars. In today's age of technological overload, just thirty years after his most well–known book "Amusing Ourselves to Death," Neil Postman is revered as a prophet as more and more of our media consumption becomes purely for entertainment purposes. According to Postman a metaphor is the way in which our forms Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Personal Essay: A Humorous Incident Analysis When I first countered this question, I could thought of many things which matter to me most like my family, my friends, living a life according to my own choices without playing blame games. Next day, when 1Aleppo came under the Syrian Army I couldn't fathom the atrocities being committed on innocent lives. This incident provoked me to write my thoughts on facebook after a long period of time, texting my friends that we will organize a charity event or solidarity march. It was this moment that I realized that helping people out of problems whenever possible, taking a stand for known– unknown strangers matter most to me. I don't want to sound pessimistic but I am not hopeful regarding the future of this world– wars, endemic diseases, natural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Coney Island: Change At The Turn Of The Century American culture changed at the turn of the century due to a challenging reestablished social order. Coney Island at the beginning of the twentieth century had a profound impact on societal norms. Outside of Coney Island, women were often treated as inferior while men ruled the throne in nearly all aspects of life. However, within Coney Island the gender gap was equalized. Coney Island served as a medium to a change in the traditional mindset. Here, the hotels, amusement parks, and rides and events that the civilians encountered a display of immorality, fast pleasure and love for profit. When Molly sees Heather, she instantly senses something is wrong; the warm day suddenly sends chills down her back as she hears Heather talking to an unseen new "friend" named Helen. Molly is scared and yells at Heather telling her to come home. Heather soon comes home and says that Molly was being mean to her, later she warns Molly that she shouldn't keep spying on her or if she continues her new friend Helen will do something bad to them. The next day Heather runs off again, Molly finds her at the remnants of a magnificent old house that had been burnt long ago.She hears Heather talking once again to the unseen friend. Molly thinks that Heather is in danger and grabs her arm and drags her home where Molly is then scolded for "being mean to Heather" by Dave. • 15. The Memory of My Tragic Accident Essay I opened my eyes to see, yet again, the irritating glare of the ceiling lights. The sickly green walls added to the nauseating clinical feeling. It is no surprise I cannot "progress" enough to leave with such dismal surroundings. I regained most of my strength quickly after the accident but my memory did not appear to be coming back. The doctors had said my accident had made national news. "Car accident...his wife in labour...memory may never return...tragic accident". Simply an unfortunate case of wrong place and wrong time they said. The irony of the incident being we all ended up in hospital. Since then I have been completely unable to recollect any of my past. I could not even remember my own name. Isabella Pyper. The sound still felt...show more content... This must be home. I grabbed my rucksack and bounced eagerly the front porch. The man and the woman, my mother and father, helped take my things to my room. I examined my room with a sense of familiarity: my small double bed pushed up against the far wall; my desk cluttered with drawings; my wardrobe draped in multicoloured clothes; my shoes lazily strewn in heap beside the door. It felt familiar but no matter how hard I tried I could not piece together any of my past. Frustrated, I kicked off my shoes and hopped onto my bed. I melted into the mountain of pillows and blankets and took a deep breath inhaling the aroma of my rose scented perfume. It felt like heaven compared to those old–fashioned hospital beds. I felt tired after the long journey home. It was late afternoon but I was sure I could afford a small nap before dinner. I flicked off the lights and closed the curtains, stepping carefully towards my bed in the dark. I flopped onto my bed and closed my eyes for my mind required a much needed rest. I was stood in a forest staring into the darkness. The pounding of my heart felt like it was going to burst open my chest. Sweat was dripping down my face and my bare feet were pricked and oozing crimson blood. The forest was alive at night. Small creatures and animals flitted across the fallen leaves. I could hear someone in the distance shouting my name. I saw a shadow. Something was coming towards me. The person who was shouting my name was getting Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. 9/11 Tragic Incident The act of an individual endangering and taking the life of another individual has become way too common in our world. No one is born into the world as a violent person; however, it seems as if every day the media is covering a different incident involving a shooting or some type of tragic event, leaving people in a constant state of fear. Newspaper headlines are covered with inexplicable events that lead us to believe that the world is becoming an increasingly scarier place. How is it possible to enjoy life if some people may be afraid to leave their own houses after an unexpected, tragic incident occurs? As a society, we have become so classically conditioned that it is common for traumatic events to affect individuals even long after they...show more content... Even though I live in the town over, I am able to see how people change their behaviors and alter their daily routines because of this incident; in fact, I even took notice of how my own personal actions and behaviors have changed. When something out of the ordinary happens, such as an event like this, it is no surprise that fear takes over our emotions. In some cases, the effects of a traumatic event can be never ending for some, and often times, people are unable to cope with these emotions. With all the recent shootings, attacks, and traumatic events that are constantly happening in our world, I believe that we live in a world of fear, and sometimes it is hard not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Amusing The Million Summary "Amusing the Million" by John F. Kasson, is a book that presents the very cusp of modern social and economic culture pre WWI. The well cultured, but often considered ostentatious influential groups instituted several other forms of recreational activities for the public to take part in, but because of the sophisticated and banal nature of these undertakings, many of the people shunned them. John F. Kasson impacts his readers with his books on cultural history that vary through a high and low volume of materials. Even though most of his work reflects his passion on the dynamics of a cultural society, his interests and disciplines range from literature, visual arts to psychology and anthropology. As an author, he's wrote multiple titles such as "Civilizing the Machine, Rudeness and Civility and The Little Girl Who Fought Depression". Kasson enjoys teaching both undergrad and...show more content... When Coney Island opened in 1895, it was the prime example to show how people wanted to spend their free time. Kasson gives the reader an understanding of the evolution of the nature of American entertainment via Coney Island, which was used by the American public as an escape from the ridged societal expectations of moral integrity and long suffering that was imposed upon them by the leading powers during the time. Coney Island represented an act of social rebellion that birthed a dichotomy of how Americans view and use entertainment. We can see even today the different kinds of ways and reasons that people entertain themselves, whether it be a carefree carousal to momentarily distract themselves from the harsh realities of the world, a calm and collected reflection of themselves and what is around them through media and art, or anything in between, it can be argued that Coney Island was the beginning of all that we see today when it comes to American entertainment and even life. • 18. Amusing Ourselves To Death By Neil Postman In the book "Amusing ourselves to death" Neil Postman is making an argument about the fact that humans could amuse themselves to death in their lives.Even if when we think of death we think at something terrible,in his book this particular term is asociated with "amusament" which is a quite unusual asociation of terms. At the beggining of the book the author is making a paralel between Orwell and Huxley. What is quite known about these two is the fact that their ideas were different and the book "Amusing ourselves to death" states this ideas. What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there whould be no one who would want to read one.Orwell feared those who would deprive...show more content... Postman thinks that all culture is a conversation, or more precisely a corporation of conversations, conducted in a variety of symbolic modes. His attention here was on how forms of public discourse regulate and even dictate what kind of content can issue from such forms. He states the fact that American Indians were using smoke signals but this particular type of conversation could not be very detailed for they could not communicate philosophical arguments. But when you transmit information through smoke signals, writing or radio, the shape of a man becomes irrelevant. All that matters are the ideas he states and the way he thinks. I think that if people could focus more on what a person has to say and less on how a person looks we could actually learn something from each other and become more informed. Neil Postman states the fact that "how a person looks is quite relevant on television. The grossness of a three hundred pound image, even a talking one, would easily overwhelm any logical or spiritual subtleties conveyed by speech. For on television, discourse is conducted largely through visual imagery, which is to say that television gives us a conversation in images, not words. The emergence of the image–manager in the political arena and the concomitant decline of the speech writer attest to the fact that television demands a different kind of content from other media. You cannot do political philosophy on television. Its form works against the content". Given to this, we could affirm that television changed the game and now images become more important than the information that is sent. People would often remember images more quickly than information and this is quite sad given the fact that we should be more concerned with the news, not the way they are submitted. Because of television people became superficial and stopped looking for information on their own, instead they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
