Explore the Human Experience Through The Scriblerus Literary Journal
1. Business Review
The Scriblerus is a literary arts journal, produced by students at Greenville
College, which seeks to explore the human experience with honesty and
authenticity. Such works that are accepted into the journal contain elements
of passion and curiosity, while also portraying the complexity of being
human. The works that are acknowledged by The Scriblerus are: fiction,
nonfiction, and poetry writing; digital video works; and visual art pieces.
While the journal is based at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois,
submissions are accepted from high schools and other undergrad institutions
in the CCCU network as well.
Objective
We at The Scriblerus believe that expression in its purest form calls for a deep
understanding of one’s self and of the human experience as a whole. At
Greenville College, much of this understanding comes from our innate drive
to appreciate God’s creation. Through The Scriblerus, we strive to showcase
what it means to be human in an honest and authentic way.
Product
The Scriblerus offers the unique opportunity to become involved in creating
for the sake of appreciating the human experience in which we are all a part.
The works created and submitted are then showcased on the online journal.
The Scriblerus also partners with The Papyrus, Greenville College’s online
student run newspaper, and The Vista, Greenville College’s student run
magazine, to offer the Live Arts Contest and the Spoken Word Poetry Contest
for high school-aged participants.

Marketing Strategy
Problems:
1) Not many people on campus are aware of The Scriblerus online
journal.
2) Majority of those who are aware of The Scriblerus are not
submitting work to the journal due to being busy with school or other
extra curricular activities.
2. Immediate Strategy:
Presently, The Scriblerus is focusing much of its resources on the
Greenville College Community students and professors. Some ways in
which The Scriblerus can reach this community are as follows:
1) Social Media fan pages (Facebook and Twitter) – followers
can be updated on what is happening in the Scrib world.
2) Chapel and Desire to Learn announcements – much of the
community attends chapel, so preparing announcements for
chapel to advertise certain events that the Scrib is putting on,
as well as advertising the Scrib itself, will reach a wide range of
students and staff on campus. Students and faculty also use
Desire to Learn on a daily basis, so by creating ads to be posted
on D2L, a wide range of the target market will be reached.
3) Flyers – flyers can be designed and posted around various
campus and town locations (Joe’s Java, Maves Art Building,
Digital Media Center, Adam Bros. Coffee Shop, Marston Hall,
Snyder Hall) in order to raise awareness for events sponsored
by the Scrib, as well as the journal itself.
The Scriblerus will also sponsor some or all of the following events to
advertise the journal:
1) “Open Mic Night” at Adam Bros. Coffee Shop – this event will
be held on Monday, November 15th at 7:30 p.m., and will offer
the opportunity for students to share their own poetry, and
other writings, in an Open Mic fashion. This event, sponsored
by The Scriblerus, will not only raise awareness for the poetry
and writing sections of the journal, but also bring customers to
Adam Bros. Coffee Shop, ultimately building a relationship
between the Scrib staff the Adam Bros. staff and community.
2) “Outside the Box” competition – in this competition, artists
are chosen to compete in a people’s choice contest in which the
artists will randomly select an unordinary media to use to
create a work that fits within the Scrib’s theme of exploring the
human experience. Such media could be anything from
pudding, to chewed chewing gum, to spray paint. The
contestants will then have an allotted time period of [Insert
Definite Time Period] in that they have to create their work.
There will be multiple rounds, and artists will or will not be
voted through by the audience. A panel of judges will be
present to critique each work, and help to push the audience to
make a decision, but the decisions will ultimately be up to the
audience. The artists that make it to the final round will be
published in the Scrib, but the best work will receive a small
prize. Small prizes can include: iTunes cards, Amazon Cards,
Joe’s Java gift cards, Adam Bros. gift cards.
3) “Flash Fiction and Short Poetry” competition – contestants
will have an allotted amount of time to write and submit works
3. of flash fiction and short poetry to be reviewed and awarded
placement and prizes by The Scriblerus editors. Submissions
will be on the website.
4) “Blackroom Café Open Mic Night” – similar to the “Poetry
Slam,” this event will offer the opportunity for students to
share some of their own written works in open mic fashion.
5) The “Live Arts Contest” – The Scriblerus partners with The
Vista and The Papyrus to sponsor the “Live Arts Contest” every
spring and fall. In this contest, participants are divided by age
and compete for titles such as Division Winner and Honorable
Mention in the following categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry,
and visual art. Cash prizes are awarded to the top high school
entry, the top undergrad entry, and the first and second place
entries in each category. These titles are then published in The
Vista magazine and The Scriblerus journal, and can be placed
on one’s resume and used as work experience when putting
together a portfolio.
Beyond raising awareness for The Scriblerus, the staff must also tackle
the issue of low submission rates. While The Scriblerus does offer a
unique online journal in which writers, artists, and videographers can
submit their own works with the prospect of being published, this
alone is not enough incentive to drive busy college students to submit
those works. In order to raise submission rates, The Scriblerus is
shifting from a simple arts journal to an arts journal that provides the
opportunity for networking – something near to every college
student’s heart. The means by which the Scrib will accomplish this
task is as follows:
1) “Mixed Media Mayhem” – any time that someone submits a
work, whether published or not, that person gains access to the
exclusive Mixed Media Mayhem. The Mixed Media Mayhem is
an event sponsored by The Scriblerus that offers the incredible
opportunity of networking with professionals in the various
categories of art that the Scrib offers. At the end of a
submission period, the Scrib staff will invite professionals from
each of the categories in the Scrib (fiction, nonfiction, poetry,
video, and visual art) to speak to all invitees about their
experiences. This will be in small group fashion based on
category, and students will be able to gain insight into the
professional life of that particular person. The professionals
will give advice and experiences, and students will have the
opportunity to have their own work critiqued by the
professionals themselves. The Mixed Media Mayhem offers
students the unique opportunity for networking in the
professional world, as well as the blessing of professional
advice and insight.
4. Future Strategy:
The Scriblerus faculty advisor and student editors will work to build
relationships with the editors of other publications from other
schools. While this is in progress, the marketing assistant will reach
out to the student bodies of these institutions. [ideas still in the
making].
