1. Final Project
English Language in Pharmacy
Subject Area: Farmacia
Student Grade: Formacion Profesional
Description of the project:
The Aim of this project is to teach students English vocabulary which would assist them with several types of
everyday interactions in English which may occur in a pharmacy setting.
The project consisted of a PowerPoint presentation, Kahoot Game and in-class role play scenarios. The vocabulary
was also added to the teachers Memrise program in a non-curriculum section.
Background:
In the field of Pharmacy a major role of Pharmacy staff is communication with patients/customers to ensure safe and
effective use of medication and medical devices and as such this was my focus when preparing the presentation
including common medications, diseases, treatments, symptoms, how to obtain a medical history and Over the
Counter interactions with the public.
Role play scenarios are a great way to enhance the students’ oral communication skills in English which is often the
most challenging aspect of learning a new language.
I have also included a fun facts/everyday scenarios which may occur in a community pharmacy setting including
colloquial terms for different medical conditions/medical devices which often can’t be learnt in a classroom and
could prove tricky at times
What is my Role as a Language Assistant?
I’m a registered Pharmacist in Australia and have worked extensively both in Australia and the United Kingdom and
adapted the PowerPoint presentation and role plays around common scenarios that I had experienced in my
professional career. Since I have been lucky enough to work in both countries, I have also included a comparison
between both systems and work environments.
This specific presentation will be shared during a 55 min class. Since starting my role as an LA helping the students,
I’ve had both small group independent discussions and assisted whole class teachings. This has resulted in allowing
the teacher to focus on specific curriculum and vocabulary and me often discussing and adding a more
practical/colloquial aspect.
How will I be evaluating the activities?
This specific presentation will be evaluated via the Kahoot game and marking of specific role play. Grading will go
from a high level of interaction and understanding (A) to a poor level of interaction and understanding(C). It will also
include those students who have shown a sufficient/satisfactory understanding (B)
Teaching a diverse group of students
This group of students is undertaking a vocational study and include a very wide range of personalities, ages and
both social and professional backgrounds. It is not uncommon to find students who have just finished school but also
those changing careers at a later stage in life. Therefore, the level of English language shown by the students will
reflect this.
2. I hope using the PowerPoint presentation, stopping regularly for questions and engaging the students with role plays
scenarios and the quiz will cater for all students in the class.
