Engineering Leadership
● I am a natural “coaching” type personality who strives to succeed through others and
believes strongly in the power of team.
● I have an outstanding hiring (and firing) record. Employees I hire tend to rate higher than
their peers and rapidly acclimate and succeed in their new environments.
● I am a tenacious recruiter and will spend months pursuing top candidates.
● I am generally a high-expectations but hands-off direct manager of senior talent.
● In any situation with a high performing team, I do not believe in being the boss. I act as a
peer with a different role and set of job responsibilities. Some teams require a very hands-on
approach, but that should always be a temporary situation.
● I believe it is absolutely critical that engineering teams make their own decisions. My role as
a leader is to facilitate objective discussion and decision making and flip the coin if
absolutely necessary.
● I greatly enjoy spending time with more junior staff and make sure to coach life skills (Here’s
why you need that 401k.. This is what ESPP is and why to max it out..) alongside job skills.
● I am a strong, efficient communicator both with leadership and my teams.
3. 3
● I take great pride in ensuring my teams are recognized as the best and always advocate
both for excellence and reward. For example, at Cisco my direct team was:
○ The most highly trained team in the entire enterprise segment (~15000 engineers)
○ Two out of five of the first “engineer of the quarter” awards went to my staff
○ The most active team in the division at using the internal peer rewards system - both
giving and receiving - to other teams
Architecture Leadership
● 10+ years of experience acting as hands-on chief architect and either vastly improving or
building products from scratch, including:
○ SORT - Cloud-based storage management
○ CPI - Any-to-any unix installation framework for Symantec/Veritas’ enterprise storage
solutions
○ CNA - Small-scale network management utility with a very large data backend
○ Cisco Active Advisor - Cloud-based network management and zero-touch
deployment
○ APIC-EM - Enterprise megascale, policy-based software defined network controller
● I stay familiar with a wide gamut of technologies from humble command line tools to
bleeding edge cloud platforms
● Active teacher and partner with other teams and business functions such as marketing,
sales, etc. I have a great passion for bridging cross-functional gaps.
Data Collection and Analysis
● At both Cisco and Symantec, I worked with executive leadership to design, build, evangelize,
and utilize data collection engines for the purpose of enabling data-driven decisions
○ Safely, securely, and with high customer consent collected over 3 million (and
counting) customer configuration files at Cisco, enabling:
■ The enterprise networking marketing team to focus solely on in-use,
real-world features and abandon support for those which remained unused
■ Presales to locate customers with end of life hardware in need of
replacement, leading to tens of millions of dollars (and counting) in refresh
sales
■ Global enforcement to locate and remove from customer environments
millions of dollars worth of counterfeit interface cards

Experience
Very Large Companies
● EY, 2016 - Current: Agile, Scrum, Project Management
○ Implementing agile/scrum management practices in EY’s IT division for strategic
internal application portfolio.
● Cisco, 2010-2016: Networking, Big Data, customer data acquisition and
data-driven decisions, CSAT improvements, large public and private cloud
new product development
○ Managing global teams of 50+ engineers ranging from very senior to new grad
■ Operated simultaneously as Sr. Manager and Lead Architect, managing
Managers and Tech Leads
○ Chief Architect / Principal Engineer
■ Built several platforms from scratch:

business opportunity by understanding how our users configure our
products
● Simplified deployment for enterprise WIFI devices via the cloud,
saving customers time and money when performing large WLAN
rollouts
● Cloud-based network analysis, driving presales and customer
satisfaction by providing a zero-cost, low barrier to entry network
discovery engine
● Policy-based, easy to use autoscale private cloud PaaS similar to
google app engine, allowing developers to focus on their
domain-specific code while the platform handles scale, replication,
etc
■ Vastly improved existing products as Product Owner / Manager / Architect
● Led design and implementation of the world’s most scalable
network topology viewer, written in native HTML5 Canvas, and its
associated back-end service mix
● Led reboot and refresh of Cisco’s most popular software package
(by downloads), Cisco Network Assistant
○ Put together a very small, focused team to revive a product
that was getting 160,000 downloads a year but had no
engineering
○ Triaged years’ worth of backlog for a handful of critical
fixes
5. 5
○ Created current/future backlog, focusing on high-impact
ease of use features to continue collecting ROI on the
product
○ Leveraged the product’s popularity as our initial data
gathering client
■ Operational Leadership
● Personally took over the Devops / CICD scrum master role for our
product and improved transparency and performance of builds 10X
while delivering key insights back to executive leadership

● Micromenders, 1992-1993
○ Sold owning stake in a PC and Printer repair business to focus on internet
Profile
Having fun and getting it done - I'm an engineering leader dedicated to creative excellence. I bring
passion, focus, speed, and over 25 years of multidisciplinary experience to the table. I've been
hacking on technology since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver: taking apart my dad’s radios
6. 6
and building circuits from Forrest M Mimms books as a young kid, my precious Commodores in the
late 80's, owning a PC and printer repair shop at 22, and then discovering and falling in love with
Linux and the internet and experiencing a wonderful career in both the largest and smallest of
companies.
I bring a very broad approach to solving problems with a firm belief in iterative methods (UCD/HCD,
Agile, LEAN, DevOps) and eliminating inefficiencies, but with a strong understanding that people
come first. Your customers and your employees are the ultimate key to your success. If you don't
understand your customers or you aren't in sync with your employees, success is much more costly.
I am an excellent communicator with the proven ability to bridge implementation teams to executives
and corporate communications to customers. I have frequently been invited to join keynote
presentations at premier corporate events.
I have also written several articles available on LinkedIn:
