2. Laura Mulvey first introduced her Gaze theory in 1975, in her essay
“Visual Pleasure and Natural Cinema”. The theory explains how the
audience perceives the people presented, especially women. Mulvey
suggests that women are presented as objects to be viewed in a
sexual nature, from the perspective of a heterosexual male.
3. Male Gaze from the perspective of Feminists
When this concept deals from the point of view of feminists, there are
three ways the concept can be seen;
• How men look at women
• How women look at themselves
• How women look at other women
4. Features of the Male Gaze
Some examples of the features of a music video when applying
Mulvey’s theory are:
• The camera typically lingers/loiters on the female body, and events
which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a
man's reaction to these events.
• Women are shown as objects of attraction rather than people, and
experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the
male.
