2. What is a Wiki?
● A Wiki is a web application which
allows people to add, modify or delete
content in collaboration with others.
Put simply, a wiki is a website,
database or online community that
is managed by its users.
Accordingly, any user is able to add,
edit or remove content.
3. What does 'wiki' mean?
The word wiki means "quick" in the Hawaiian language,
and the inspiration for the first wiki came from a Honolulu
airport bus called the Wiki Wiki Shuttle.
Ward Cunningham, the first wiki software developer and
inventor of the Wiki Wiki Web in 1995, chose this term
because he dubbed his wiki as,"the simplest online
database that could possibly work."
4. Wiki vs Wikipedia
Wikipedia is probably the biggest
reference that most people use to gain
information on certain things.
What most people do not know is that
Wikipedia is in no way unique; there are
other wikis on the internet.
The main difference between wiki and
Wikipedia is that the former is actually a
type of website or a website format. In
contrast, Wikipedia is just a website that
adheres to the Wiki format.
5. More about wiki…
● A wiki is a type of content management system, however it differs from a
blog and most other such systems.
● Wikis usually have different pages dedicated to different topics or themes.
They're powered by technology known as a wiki engine, or wiki software.
● Text is usually written using a simplified markup language, or a rich text
editor. It is not necessary to know HTML.
● The content of the wiki is created without any defined owner or leader.
● Wiki’s have more implicit structure, allowing structure to emerge according
to the needs of the users.

7. The open philosophy of wiki – allowing anyone to edit content – does not ensure that every editor's
intentions are well-mannered.
● For example, vandalism (changing wiki content to something offensive, adding nonsense,
maliciously removing encyclopedic content, or deliberately adding incorrect information, such as
hoax information) can be a major problem.
● Wikis, because of their open nature, are susceptible to intentional disruption, known as "trolling".
However larger wikis often employ sophisticated methods, such as bots that automatically identify and
revert vandalism.
● Edit wars can also occur as users repetitively revert a page to the version they favor.
Some wiki software allows an administrator to stop such edit wars by locking a page from further
editing until a decision has been made on what version of the page would be most appropriate
● Malware can also be a problem for wikis, as users can add links to sites hosting malicious code.

8. Advantages
● Free: Most of the Wiki hosting platforms are for free.
● Anyone can edit and no need to learn coding : Creating and editing Wikis are very easy and user
friendly. They do not require HTML or other programming languages.
● Encourages Non Technical Users: Non technical users can also create and publish content with
ease.
● Wikis are instantaneous so there is no need to wait for a publisher to create a new edition or update
information
● people located in different parts of the world can work on the same document
● the wiki software keeps track of every edit made and it's a simple process to revert back to a
previous version of an article
● the wiki has no predetermined structure - consequently it is a flexible tool which can be used for a
wide range of applications
● Connects Multiple Resources: Wiki is a combination of Web pages linked together. Educators can
provide students with as many resources as they can. It helps them learn in a detailed way.
9. Disadvantages
Advantages in one context, may be disadvantages in another.
● Anyone can edit so this may be too open for some applications, for example confidential
documentation. However it is possible to regulate user access.
● Open to SPAM and Vandalism if not managed properly. There are easy ways to restore a page
however, and on WikiEducator you must be logged in to edit pages so this reduces vandalism
by automated spam bots.
● Requires Internet connectivity to collaborate, but technologies to produce print versions of
articles are improving
● The flexibility of a wiki's structure can mean that information becomes disorganised. As a
wiki grows, the community plans and administers the structure collaboratively.
● The usual guidelines for healthy computer use apply
