KIVA, a microfinance lending website that aims to alleviate
poverty through mediated loans transacted through the
internet.
A non-profit organization founded in 2005, KIVA.org connects
borrowers to possible lenders through the internet. The
organization takes advantage of its worldwide network of
microfinance institutions in order to administer loans to
millions of small business owners around the world,
particularly in developing countries. Since its inception, over
$800 million have been given out by over 1 million lenders
borrowers from 84 countries. Despite these numbers, KIVA
lenders are still repaid 99% of the time.

 How does the KIVA model work? KIVA works with
numerous local microfinance institutions across
five continents that provide loans to small-time
entrepreneurs who have a difficult time gaining
access to funds through the banking system.
Once a lender agrees to finance a loan for a
minimum amount of $25, the entire amount is sent
to the microfinancing institution who will then
directly administer the loan to the borrower. The
loan will then be gradually repaid while the lender
is being updated of the borrower's progress in
their respective ventures. The amount repaid can
be used in a variety of ways, including funding a
new loan or donating to KIVA in order to sustain
operations.
