Personal Statement
I am a student at Sheffield Hallam University studying Biomedical Science. I have an interest in
doing a MSci as an additional research-based year after my final year. This is due to my year in
a placement at the University of Sheffield as a Lab technician which has made me interested in
continuing though the research route of science and has giving me a better understanding of
what it is like to be in a research-related career. I also am interested in doing research on
helping make a better understanding of different disease so they can be controlled or treated
better such as using zebrafish as a model for tuberculosis to understand it pathogenesis and the
mechanism the body uses against it.

Skills And Qualities
Laboratory and Research Skills
● I have the knowledge and the experiences within a lab with health and safety protocols
and how to apply them into a risk assessment.
● I am also able to plan and design my own experiments while troubleshooting any
problems that may come up to get reliable results.
● I am experienced in pipetting, biuret, measuring and weighing, thin layer
chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, Flame emission
spectroscopy, microscopes, Ph meters, data analysis, titration, and solution preparation.
● Uses of animal models such as zebrafish and how to handle them within a laboratory
setting and to keep given guidelines and laws.
● Keeping up a bacterial culture for multiple months for research purposes.
● Time Management
● Throughout my time in university and 6th form I organised and planned the workload I
was given through coursework and revision so that I could get good results on my
coursework and exams. I managed to do this by using a 2 week schedule where one
2. week I would work on one area of a subject and then the next I would work on the other
such as one week on science and one week on project design
● During my work placement year in my 3rd
year of university I was given no given time to
come in and do the job I was meant to do just times that when thing could and couldn’t
be done such as fish breeding and I put my time efficiently around them different times.
IT Skills
● I am experienced at using software such as Microsoft Offices and Google Drive,
Firework, Dreamwork and Arduino.
Teamwork/ Leadership
● During my first year at university, we did a project called the KIT Assignment where I
was the CEO of a group of people making a KIT for the diagnosis of bladder cancer and
I had to make sure that the other people in the group were doing their job such as if the
finance manager had the right knowledge from the lab manager so they were working
the price of the right equipment.
● During my work placement year in my 3rd
year of university I had to work and help
different master and PHD students with there research side of their course such as
making sure they have enough stock or to help them with aquarium duties if they
couldn’t be in that day or if they didn’t have the right agender checks at the time.
Work Experience
