Dear Neighbor:
I am writing today to ask for your participation in a May Day Event to be held at 4515 N 65th Ave. Jeff
Waschkowski & I became the stewards of an earth-sheltered home a few years ago & as I thought about
how we could share & be good neighbors, I came up with the idea of May Day. That’s why I’m writing to
you today.
I have fond memories growing up & making May Baskets & anonymously leaving them on friends’
doorsteps. It was fun to do something for someone without expecting anything in return. The idea started
to grow. The first year we intended to occupy our new home by May 1st. We made it on the 11th…but the
May Day activity had begun. Jeff & I, & our company, On The Edge Enterprises, Inc., delivered door-to-
door about 400 door hangers in the area. The hangers included flyers about Law Day & Loyalty
Day…both of which are observed on May 1. I visited the Benson Community Center & acquired their
Spring Programs listing, made copies, & included it as well. I had a house for rent & included the For Rent
flyer. The last 7 years we gave tours of our concrete earth-sheltered home, City Councilmembers,
previous Mayor Jim Suttle, and others have joined us for free food, drinks & raffle prizes. People brought
& donated items that they wanted to share & there were tables of items for people to take…free for all &
remaining items were donated to a local charity. Groups like the Nebraska Solar Energy Society have had
exhibits & workshops. I’m sharing this information to give you some background on the start of this idea.
We continue to build from year to year.
This is the plan for our 9th year.
I’m writing this letter & making contact with as many neighbors (near & far) as I can, to invite you to
participate this year for May 1. There are a few ideas already decided & some we hope will be your great
ideas to bring to the gathering.
We are looking for a local musician(s). We want activities for kids of all ages. We will have more flyers
about Law Day & Loyalty Day to continue our education. We will also have an Open House at the Earth-
Sheltered (Community) Garden at 4510 – 4538 N 65th Ave.
We want this day to be FREE for the neighborhood. If you or your business has something to share,
please contact me at 402-779-7801 x103, 402-321-7003 or my email at beckyw@OnTheEdgeTech.com.
A few ideas to consider:
*Coupon(s)
*Cash Donation ($500 Goal)
*Advertise the event to invite
people to come
*Food &/or Drinks for the event
*Tools/gloves/wood chipper/
*Chainsaw/garden items
*’Green’ Ideas
*Literature/Flyers about your
business offerings OR host a table
w/your offerings ($5 donation)
*Educational Materials
I believe people are creative. I hope you consider this an invitation to participate in this May Day event.
We plan to continue every year on May 1…so please add us to your calendar & watch as the seeds of
great neighbors grow from year to year.
Sincerely,
Rebecca (Becky) Weitzel
