8. So how – and why – did I get here?
1. Always been logical (double maths, computing course at local tech
after O levels) – I naturally took to PCs at the very start of PC World
2. Decision to retrain in engineering domain – more to get my teeth
into – and was offered a grant on a new ES course
3. Got involved in engineering modelling – very interesting – but IT
became increasingly tedious while the people and processes drew
me in
4. Supporting Yorkshire Water during the Northern drought of 95-96
put me in contact with new-fangled import of Asset Management
5. AM played to my strengths from then on: engineering decisions,
people, networking, organisations, bright eyed and bushy tailed
6. It was actually through the IAM & international networking that I
got the opportunity to work in Australia
7. I would definitely recommend a mix of end-user, service and
consulting to see AM from all sides – though consultancy does not
suit everyone

9. Key….
• Single most influential moment?
– Probably supporting YWS during drought
• Luckiest break?
– Being asked by Jim Kennedy of AM Council to be an ‘eminent
speaker’ in 2004
• It’s really all about?
– Psychology….

16. GROUP HEAD OF ASSET MANAGEMENT (MAG)
Responsible for:
• Group AM Strategy/SAMP and AM
Planning processes
• Ensuring MAG has the tools and asset
information needed for decision making
• The development, management and
continuous improvement of the MAG
wide Asset Management Framework
aligned to ISO 55001
• Developing competence and awareness
of Asset Management within MAG
18. KEY MESSAGES
• Seek out great leaders and high performing teams – they will shape the highlights of your career
• Don’t specialise too early (domain or discipline), test the market often – where is the market going, what are companies
consistently bad at, exploit the need?
• Work in areas you have a passion for. If it doesn’t feel right, be brave, move on (but give it a really good try…)
• Consultancy is great, but client side experience gives you credibility, move between the two
• Understand the money aspects, in asset management the accountant is your friend (yes, really!)
• Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is essential, but needs to be tangible and evidenced, such as CEng, IAM
Qualifications, Certified Risk Manager, FIAM, delivering conference papers etc.
• Network and get exposure - exposure is good, but everyone hates self promoters!
• Get involved, never assume you have nothing to offer. The IAM and other industry forums are always under resourced
• Mostly, asset management leadership is creating a culture and climate of trust, so the right people are having the right
conversations supported by the right information within a defined process
Asset Management can be fun and rewarding, or can just be a job – it’s up to you!
