SiteIntroduction
Pasar Seni or Central Market Area located in the
heart of Kuala Lumpur. This area is the center
for Malaysian culture, regionalarts,
entertainment and retail.
In this Kuala Lumpur district located a lot of cultural
attractions and heritage buildings, what makes it a tourist
attraction hotspot district.
The area of the central market is widely connected by public
transportwith other points of Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley
as a whole.
In general this area is well developed in contextof modern
city.
In addition to the fact that there are a lot of interesting places
near pasar seni, the whole area is also surrounded by various
landmarks such as National museums, mosques, cultural
buildings, hyper malls and art galleries
In other words this district has great abilities for successful
developing in future
1.3
SiteIntroduction
Central Market district is well located area, a very large flow of people and cars visit the area during the daytime, which affects
traffic congestion.
This area is very popular destination due to wide public facilities range, despite on different issues in streets condition and
abilities.
Moreover this district is truly full of emotions and colors. Here are the cultural heritage of the three world currents, and all
this in the context of the modern metropolis.

Tun H S Lee street is an old street in Kuala Lumpur city
center.
Also known before as High Street , then Jalan Bandar, Tun
H S Lee street was later renamed after the country’sfirst
Finance Minister (1957-1959) Colonel Tun Sir Henry Lee
Hau Shik.
Jalan Tun H.S. Lee is a long, long street that starts from Jalan Gereja, near Telekom Museum,
all the way to Jalan Syed Putra near Wisma Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields.
It is located near more popular streets such as Petaling street and Jalan Sultan, which making
it people’s destination spot also.
Sir Henry Lee Hau Shik
Tun H S Lee street has good connections with seven main intersections, running across
Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin, Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock,
Jalan Hang Lekir and Jalan Sultan.
1.5
SiteSpecialties
Summary: this street have big potential in the future and need to be improved to develop its
opportunities
2.1
SiteInventoryandAnalysis
The central market area has well developed
infrastructure and wide range of public facilities, such as
food spots, commercial spots, public spots culture spots
and etc.
That fact is making big flow of people visit this area.
Also Pasar Seni area is mostly commercial used zone,
however it is still mixed used area due to educational and
cultural places here. Place big value is that- there are two
importantpublic culture spots here.
Public transportation is quite well developed, although the distances
between the nearest bus stops and stations is not small
2.1
SiteInventoryandAnalysis
Mostly in Pasar Seni area working and studying here locals
and a lot of tourists are gathered , as well as homeless
people sometimes.
Noise Level In this area is mostly high on Hang Lekir ,
Jalan Sultan and Jalan Petaling, however on inner
streets it is more quietly and noise level is medium.
These streets are Tun H S Lee and few small streets
between buildings.
In my focused area as it can be seen noise level Is medium.
The sun reaches its peak on the focused site about 11.30 and
already at 2.30 going down.
Sunny side during daytime on Tun H S Lee street is public
bank and Sri Maha Marianman temple side, which is
making people avoid walking this area during sun peak
time.
SiteInventoryandAnalysis
2.1
Vehicle pathes are different and well connected, but have such
problems as traffic congestionand lack of parking.
Pedestrian footpaths are well connected also, but can be
improved to make more comfortable walking and
resting place for people.
Tun H S Lee street pedestrian and vehicle pathes are
secondary. That means that traffic flow here is often
medium, despite on it there is always lack of parking
space problem.
2.1
SiteInventoryandAnalysis
Tun H S Lee street surroundingarea has wide range
of building heights and ages.
Despite on variety of buildings and its styles, this area
is not very attractive for people.
This caused from not balanced streets design and
opportunities for people.
Also there is a big problem of historical buildings
preservations. It is very often can be seen that a lot of
buildings are not using and destroying by themselves
That facts making Kuala Lumpur city streets not
interesting and not comfortablefor people.
2.1
SiteInventoryandAnalysis
Tun H. S. Lee street is a modern mega polis street with cultural
backstage.
Although there are attractive hotspots for people, this street is still not
very comfortable for people to use it very often.
There are such problems as lack of street furniture and plantings,
as well as not attractive street view, due to not restored and not
used buildings.
Also lack of trash bins causes trash on pavements.
2.2
SiteIssuesSummary
Summarizingall the collected informationand analysis in general, we can identify the main problems. The number one problem is illegal car parking on sidewalks despite on
the medium car flow, the second problem is the lack of amenities for street use by people, such feeling that that street is created for cars not for people. The third problem is
the untidiness of the street which also repels people. The last and very importantis the destruction of the historical heritage and also not attractive street view for people.
3.1
Aboutcasestudies
The term ‘case study’ has few meanings, it can be used to describe a detailed study of something, or to
describe a research method.
Case study is an ideal methodology when a holistic, in-depth investigation is needed.
( Feagin, Orum, & Sjoberg, 1991 ).
Case studies can be and must be used in teaching and research both, because it is very
importantto rely on confirmed facts and things.
Case study allows people to explore and understand how different things are workingin real
life
In other words case study is an already proven and tested useful examples from
any study or research area.
Case studies making things clear, proven and balanced.
Case study is one of the most importantthings in research, because it is the connection
between user and researcher.
Well designed project, that is not well explained will cause the research to fall. That’s
why it is very important to involve case studies in the project research.
3.2
DowntownMoves

3.2
DowntownMoves
Idea from Ottawa can be applied on Tun H. S. Lee street but
a bit In a different way.
Traffic flow can be reorganized in one line in the middle.
On the right side from traffic flow line car park can be made.
On the left hand bicycle lane.
No more illegal car park on pedestrian pavements.
For attractiveness purposes planter boxes on
the pedestrian edges can be installed.
Together with planter box benches on the
inner pedestrian walkway side can be installed
That street redesign will make more
comfortablefor people to use this street
Bicycle lane is located on the left due to sun
movement
3.3
KentuckyPreservationWorks
In USA, Kentucky state people believe that every place matters.
Smart historical buildings preservation helps preserve culture and make
a lot of new jobs and increase state economics.
More and more, Kentuckiansare understanding that reusing and
restoring historical buildings is a proven economicdevelopment strategy
that creates jobs, attractpeople, promotes environmentalsustainability
and contributesto life quality.
Aim: to preserve culture and history, to make it suitable in modern context
Who Introduced: Kentucky heritage office council, Gary & Diane Kleier
When Introduced: 2005
Why is it working:Through preserving old buildings city view and it is working
rhythm gets a new look. Old buildings are poured into the context of the modern
city and work as one.
It improves the overall appearance of streets and their attractiveness.
3.3
KentuckyPreservationWorks
Tun H S Lee street is consist from different ages buildings. About 70 % of street are old buildings .
Many of old buildings are not using at the moment and destroying .
There is a great opportunity to restore these old buildings and make new cultural or commercialplaces.
That idea should work due to favorable location- In the Kuala Lumpur city center.
This buildings can be restore in tourist attractionsshops of Chinese and Indian cultures or historical themed different
cultures cafes to attracttourists and make more attractive street view in general.
4.1
Aboutgreeninitiatives
Green Initiative starts from goinggreen.
What does goinggreen mean?
Eric G. Olson definition:
“ Complements the business, operations and asset strategies already understood and
articulated by the enterprise… that has a positive impact on the environment. “
Green principles:
1. Common culture preservation
2. Initiatives, transformations that improve the environment
3. Attractive, value and useful propositions that are cost effective
Green initiative means the way how people preserve naturalenvironment through
modern things.
Green initiative starts from small, even plant a tree is already
an initiative.
Go green means respect and preserve natural environment.
4.2
Preservationis green- Kentucky repair : rehab : re-use
Sustainable development is “ development that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generationsto meet their own needs. “
To be environmentally sustainable or green buildings should:
1 use energy and other nature sources efficiently
2 protect occupantshealth
3 reduce pollution and environmental harm
Too often there is an opinion that demolition of existing buildings and new constructionis a sustainable decision.
But is it true?
Preserving and reusing buildings preserves the energy and reduces the need for new raw materials.
But when existing buildings are demolished, energy is wasted as well as building materials are discarded in landfills.
Each year, millions of construction related materials are dumped in landfills, accounting for nearly one third of
nation’s total solid waste.
*1987, U.N. Bruntland Commission‟s report, Our Common Future.
Aim: to preserve naturalresources as well as energy
Who introduced? Kentucky heritage Council
When introduced? 2011
Why is it working? Itis easier and cheaper in both in terms of money and in terms of preserving the environment,
moreover such buildings have big cultural value and background.
4.2
Preservationis green- Kentucky
This green initiative can be applied on Tun H S Lee Street straightly.
There are few old shop lots buildings that have to be restored or demolished, but in green
initiative way these buildings should be restored straightly.
In this case these building will be big benefits of this street, they will attractmore people
and preserve natural resources and energy.
All this buildings should be restored due to age issue.
Restoring this building will make new fresh look for Tun H S Lee street and will attract
a lot of people .
4.3
Greenroof– GreatBritain
This green initiative is good in different sides. Firstly it is improving buildings view, secondly purifying
environment.
4.3
Greenroof– GreatBritain
Such green street design can be applied on the old restored shop lots building to make it united and sustainable in design.
Such buildings design will improve naturalenvironment,
Purify air , decrease temperature air and in general beatify street appearance.
Such street will have its special, favorable things for people and will make people to visit it more and more.
5.1
Summary
The change in street design in accordance with the proposed plan will have many advantages.
First of all, such changes will be useful for people using this area and also for the state, as they will help develop the potential of this
place.
People will enjoy using the street where their traffic will not be disturbed by illegally parked cars, as well as dirty sidewalks. Moreover,
now there will be benches for recreation and green plantings.
More people will choose to ride the bike as there will be an outlined space.
Due to the reconstruction of old buildings and their landscaping, the appearance of the street will be generally improved.
More people will use this street, because it will be more sustainable and livable.
Last but very importantis that this street will preserve it’s cultural value and will represent and show to everyone a real Malay
heritage Street.

  • 6. 1.3 SiteIntroduction Pasar Seni or Central Market Area located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. This area is the center for Malaysian culture, regionalarts, entertainment and retail. In this Kuala Lumpur district located a lot of cultural attractions and heritage buildings, what makes it a tourist attraction hotspot district. The area of the central market is widely connected by public transportwith other points of Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley as a whole. In general this area is well developed in contextof modern city. In addition to the fact that there are a lot of interesting places near pasar seni, the whole area is also surrounded by various landmarks such as National museums, mosques, cultural buildings, hyper malls and art galleries In other words this district has great abilities for successful developing in future
  • 7. 1.3 SiteIntroduction Central Market district is well located area, a very large flow of people and cars visit the area during the daytime, which affects traffic congestion. This area is very popular destination due to wide public facilities range, despite on different issues in streets condition and abilities. Moreover this district is truly full of emotions and colors. Here are the cultural heritage of the three world currents, and all this in the context of the modern metropolis. Focused area
  • 8. FocusedArea 1.4 Tun H. S. Lee street is a small street parallel to busy Petaling street Lee Ruber Building Public Bank+ Nirvana College Sri Maha Marianman Temple Guan Di temple Malaysia Hotel Chinese food café, optical store jewelry shops jewelry shops Empty Shop lots
  • 9. 1.4 FocusedArea Tun H S Lee street is an old street in Kuala Lumpur city center. Also known before as High Street , then Jalan Bandar, Tun H S Lee street was later renamed after the country’sfirst Finance Minister (1957-1959) Colonel Tun Sir Henry Lee Hau Shik. Jalan Tun H.S. Lee is a long, long street that starts from Jalan Gereja, near Telekom Museum, all the way to Jalan Syed Putra near Wisma Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields. It is located near more popular streets such as Petaling street and Jalan Sultan, which making it people’s destination spot also. Sir Henry Lee Hau Shik Tun H S Lee street has good connections with seven main intersections, running across Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin, Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Jalan Hang Lekir and Jalan Sultan.
  • 10. 1.5 SiteSpecialties Summary: this street have big potential in the future and need to be improved to develop its opportunities
  • 11. 2.1 SiteInventoryandAnalysis The central market area has well developed infrastructure and wide range of public facilities, such as food spots, commercial spots, public spots culture spots and etc. That fact is making big flow of people visit this area. Also Pasar Seni area is mostly commercial used zone, however it is still mixed used area due to educational and cultural places here. Place big value is that- there are two importantpublic culture spots here. Public transportation is quite well developed, although the distances between the nearest bus stops and stations is not small
  • 12. 2.1 SiteInventoryandAnalysis Mostly in Pasar Seni area working and studying here locals and a lot of tourists are gathered , as well as homeless people sometimes. Noise Level In this area is mostly high on Hang Lekir , Jalan Sultan and Jalan Petaling, however on inner streets it is more quietly and noise level is medium. These streets are Tun H S Lee and few small streets between buildings. In my focused area as it can be seen noise level Is medium. The sun reaches its peak on the focused site about 11.30 and already at 2.30 going down. Sunny side during daytime on Tun H S Lee street is public bank and Sri Maha Marianman temple side, which is making people avoid walking this area during sun peak time.
  • 13. SiteInventoryandAnalysis 2.1 Vehicle pathes are different and well connected, but have such problems as traffic congestionand lack of parking. Pedestrian footpaths are well connected also, but can be improved to make more comfortable walking and resting place for people. Tun H S Lee street pedestrian and vehicle pathes are secondary. That means that traffic flow here is often medium, despite on it there is always lack of parking space problem.
  • 14. 2.1 SiteInventoryandAnalysis Tun H S Lee street surroundingarea has wide range of building heights and ages. Despite on variety of buildings and its styles, this area is not very attractive for people. This caused from not balanced streets design and opportunities for people. Also there is a big problem of historical buildings preservations. It is very often can be seen that a lot of buildings are not using and destroying by themselves That facts making Kuala Lumpur city streets not interesting and not comfortablefor people.
  • 15. 2.1 SiteInventoryandAnalysis Tun H. S. Lee street is a modern mega polis street with cultural backstage. Although there are attractive hotspots for people, this street is still not very comfortable for people to use it very often. There are such problems as lack of street furniture and plantings, as well as not attractive street view, due to not restored and not used buildings. Also lack of trash bins causes trash on pavements.
  • 16. 2.2 SiteIssuesSummary Summarizingall the collected informationand analysis in general, we can identify the main problems. The number one problem is illegal car parking on sidewalks despite on the medium car flow, the second problem is the lack of amenities for street use by people, such feeling that that street is created for cars not for people. The third problem is the untidiness of the street which also repels people. The last and very importantis the destruction of the historical heritage and also not attractive street view for people.
  • 17. 3.1 Aboutcasestudies The term ‘case study’ has few meanings, it can be used to describe a detailed study of something, or to describe a research method. Case study is an ideal methodology when a holistic, in-depth investigation is needed. ( Feagin, Orum, & Sjoberg, 1991 ). Case studies can be and must be used in teaching and research both, because it is very importantto rely on confirmed facts and things. Case study allows people to explore and understand how different things are workingin real life In other words case study is an already proven and tested useful examples from any study or research area. Case studies making things clear, proven and balanced. Case study is one of the most importantthings in research, because it is the connection between user and researcher. Well designed project, that is not well explained will cause the research to fall. That’s why it is very important to involve case studies in the project research.

Common culture preservation 2. Initiatives, transformations that improve the environment 3. Attractive, value and useful propositions that are cost effective Green initiative means the way how people preserve naturalenvironment through modern things. Green initiative starts from small, even plant a tree is already an initiative. Go green means respect and preserve natural environment.
  • 23. 4.2 Preservationis green- Kentucky repair : rehab : re-use Sustainable development is “ development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generationsto meet their own needs. “ To be environmentally sustainable or green buildings should: 1 use energy and other nature sources efficiently 2 protect occupantshealth 3 reduce pollution and environmental harm Too often there is an opinion that demolition of existing buildings and new constructionis a sustainable decision. But is it true? Preserving and reusing buildings preserves the energy and reduces the need for new raw materials. But when existing buildings are demolished, energy is wasted as well as building materials are discarded in landfills. Each year, millions of construction related materials are dumped in landfills, accounting for nearly one third of nation’s total solid waste. *1987, U.N. Bruntland Commission‟s report, Our Common Future. Aim: to preserve naturalresources as well as energy Who introduced? Kentucky heritage Council When introduced? 2011 Why is it working?
