6. Backup specialists agree that in
order to ensure recoverability
you need:
- 3 copies of your data
- Store this data using at least
2 different media types
- Store at least 1 copy offsite
- Allow for “0 errors” by using
automatic recovery verification
using SureBackup and SureReplica
3-2-1 Rule
avoiding recovery failure
9. Leverage Data
on-demand sandbox to spin up test environments
Virtual Lab Proxy
Virtual Lab Network
Production Network
Start VMs from a backup file (SureBackup) or
replica, using a virtual lab proxy to separate
network traffic.
The internal IP address of the virtual lab
should be set to the default gateway in
production. It is also possible to allow internet
traffic through or map an IP address (static
mapping) to allow production access to a VM.
SureReplica requires distributed virtual
switches.
11. Explorer for Exchange
instant recovery of mailbox items
- Visibility into Exchange 2010 and
2013 VM backups.
- Browse, search and restore mailboxes
and mailbox contents.
- Export, email or restore directly back
to Exchange, or even Office 365.
- Recover from hard deleted items (that
were both created and deleted since last
backup)
- Twist: 1-Click Exchange item recovery
in Enterprise Manager (useful for
helpdesk staff)
12. Explorer for SharePoint
instant recovery of sharepoint items
- Visibility into SharePoint 2010 and
2013 VM backups.
- Browse, search and restore
SharePoint objects (including form
templates, documents, pictures and
reports)
- Export, email or restore directly back
to SharePoint.
13. Explorer for AD
instant recovery of active directory items
- Visibility into Active Directory 2003
(and higher) VM backups.
- Browse, search and restore any
Active Directory objects, to the same
or different location.
- Compare the backup state with the
current Active Directory partition to
quickly find changes.
- Twist: Restores original password for
account objects.
New
14. Explorer for SQL
precise recovery of SQL databases
- Visibility into SQL 2005, 2008, 2008
R2, 2012 and 2014 VM backups.
- Browse and restore SQL databases to
a specific point in time via
transaction log replay.
- 1-Click self-restore in Enterprise
Manager (no VM name required)
- Twist: Built-in agentless transaction
log backup for low RPO SQL
protection.
New
15. - Non-persistent log saving process is pushed
during normal backup window and saves logs
at specified intervals.
- VLB files contain all logs collected in the same
period (using CPU friendly LZ4 compression) for a
single increment in the backup chain.
Have specific reports and statistics for SQL, handled by
engine but not visible as separate jobs in the interface.

New
19. Replication and Failover
support for replication and planned failover
VM-level HA and DR host-based
replication using various optimizations
with multiple restore points.
- Incremental near-CDP
replication with WAN acceleration.
- Re-IP on failover and real
failback with delta sync.
- 1-Click failover with defined
startup order for VMs.
- Twist! Replication from backup
file as source.
New
New
21. Cloud Connect
use or become a dedicated cloud provider
- Uses backup copy and WAN
acceleration (if licensed on
customer side).
- Hosted offsite backup to a
cloud repository through an
SSL connection.
- 10-minute setup, multi-tenant
support, resource
management, scale-out
architecture and encryption.
Service provider licensing (monthly rental)
available through Veeam Cloud Provider
program, costs for end-users depend on the
provider.
New
22. Cloud Connect
can be a live DR site, not just store data
Cloud Provider serves as a
disaster recovery site, offsite
backup becomes more powerful:
- Restore files and individual
application items.
- Use backup as a starting point
for a replication job (cloud
seeding, requires VPN)
- Instant VM recovery (and
possibly site failover, requires VPN).
New
23. End-to-End Encryption
protect data at source, in flight and at rest
File encryption uses two restore keys,
one for the user and one stored in
Enterprise Manager, allowing restores
even if the user key is forgotten.
Uses a fixed AES 256-bit key, with CPU extensions this
produces little to no overhead.
For restore the user sends the enterprise admin the
file’s unique blob, based on this the enterprise admin
generates a restore blob.
Data in transit can be encrypted using SSL.
New
24. Enterprise Manager
1-click restore of files and application items
- Manages several Veeam
Backup and Replication
servers.
- Enables 1-Click restore for
files (indexed), VMs and
application-items.
- Provides granular rights
delegation for administration
and restore.
25. 3. For VMware a SAN snapshot can be used to
speed up the backup (BoSS).
For Hyper-V the external VSS snapshot can leverage
hardware VSS and for Hyper-V 2012 R2 the internal VSS
snapshot will use a VM snapshot
1. Prior to backup the VM is made application
consistent (quiesced) using VSS or the
hypervisor integration tools.
2. For VMware: a VM snapshot is taken
For Hyper-V: an internal and external VSS
snapshot is made.
At this point a backup can be made.

how Veeam backup works
26. Backup off Storage Snapshots (BoSS)
speed up backup creation for VMware
- Use storage snapshots for Veeam backup
creation (up 20x faster) as it leverages CBT.
- Support for HP VSA, LeftHand, 3PAR and P4000 and
NetApp ONTAP 8.1 or later, includes IBM N-series
(FlexClone licensing recommended but not required). New
27. Explorer for Storage Snapshots
speed up restore from storage snapshots for VMware
- Fast restore from storage snapshots, including:
Instant VM recovery, guest file restore,
application-items for Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL,
and AD.
+ NetApp specific functionality
Leverage SnapVault and SnapMirror, allowing you
to easily meet the 3-2-1 rule, where you have
copies of your Veeam-created application
consistent snapshots!
New
28. EMC DataDomain Integration
speed up backup time by up to 50%
- Support for EMC Data Domain Boost
(DD OS 5.4) offers faster backups and
lower network usage (EMC boost license
required).

30. Backup I/O Control
monitor the load on production during backup
I/O control monitors production storage
during backup, allowing backup despite
production workload:
- Configure storage latency before
backup multiprocessing is limited.
- Configure storage latency before the
backup is throttled.
New
31. Snapshot Hunter
avoid snapshot consolidation errors in VMware
Provides additional verification of
snapshot consolidation in vSphere:
- Actively monitor the vSphere estate for
VMs with stuck snapshots (that exist on disk
but are no longer visible in the UI) and will
attempt to consolidate these periodically.
New
32. Tape Support
send files and backups to tape
Support for sending files and backup
copies to tape devices (using a tape proxy)
with windows drivers, LTO3 and above.
33. Backup and Replication v8
