samuel beckett review

 1. 1. Samuel Beckett theatre practitioner review
 2. 2. Is the pack accurate, does it fairly summarise and represent mainstream view on this practitioner?

The biography is too short and lacking in detail, it grazes the surface of several subjects and then fails to go into any detail or elaborate on anything, for example books and other works are mentioned but it only specifies a title not what the subject is.

Through the entire biography the fact that Samuel Meyerhold is a theatre practitioner or has anything to do with theatre is not mentioned directly once. A list of works seems to be the major contents of the biography, rather than much detail about the actual practitioner’s life.

However information specified in the biography is accurate in its contents. For improvement more detail is needed.

The slide show only contains two images. Images of works would make the slide show more interesting and give the viewers more incite into the practitioners work. It would also break up large amounts of information.

Aside from one image of a woman in a rocking chair, there is no other imagery or description directly entailing Beckett’s work, as readers we have little incite into the contents of this practitioners work.

We did like that there are two plays by the practitioner which are fully detailed on slides.

Further information about the practitioner is mentioned on slides later on, it would be more coherent if all the information was on the same slide.

There are nineteen slides all together, some of these we feel could be put together to shorten the slide show and make it flow better.

 3. 3. Is it properly referenced, are sources cited correctly?

All the work is properly and correctly referenced. Reference material includes books, and video as well as the internet, this is very good. However book references should contain ISBN numbers and pages which the information was taken from.

Grammar has not been properly checked, for example in the forth slide, the word ‘husbajid’ is used in the place of ‘husband’

The categories are not concise; slides are broken up into opinionated sub categories such as ‘what people think’ rather than formal headings.

 4. 4. Are there divergent views which should be acknowledged?

Information on views mentioned in the slide ‘people’s views’ contains quotations from two people, and they are both on different subjects.

more summarised and generalised information on views in the theatre area would be an improvement.

Influences mentioned need to say how they influence Beckett or how Beckett has influenced other practitioners work, instead of just stating they were an influence.

 5. 5. Is the application of ideas appropriate, could this go further or in different directions, if so what directions?

Statements like ‘Beckett’s work represents the most sustained attack on the realist tradition’ are not backed up with any imagery or explanation making it impossible to comprehend or visualise.

There is a lot of information on modernism and the effect this has had on the theatre world, but no direct mention of how particular plays have had any effect, positive or negative, and how or why this has happened.

More detailed information on his influences on the theatre world would be an improvement.

Different movements mentioned could be explained more thoroughly so we have the context in which his work was set and influenced.

There seems to be unnecessary slides such as famous quotes, these do not add to the detail of the review and just confuse the reader as they are not set within context. To improve this the quotes could be fed into relevant slides to make a more coherent review.
