2. How Do Libraries Provide
Access to eSerial Content?

15. Why Is This Important For
Publishers?
“Statistics showed that the usage of Academic Search
Elite has more than doubled since adding the records
into the OPAC, from an average of 5,067 to 11,176 a
month.” – Jina Wakimoto, CSU-Northridge
“Now that SUSHI has enabled ERM software to
efficiently retrieve COUNTER usage statistics using
SUSHI on a e-journal basis, the need for per-e-journal
costs will become even more acute, because libraries
will rightly demand the capability of calculating cost-
per-use numbers in a meaningful way.” – Ted Koppel,
Ex-Libris
16. Why Should Publishers Co-
operate?
“When you sit down and figure out how many staff
members it would require to catalog and update our e-
journals… it’s a clear indication of how good a deal it is
to work with Serials Solutions® 360 MARC record
service.” -- Jeffrey Daniels, Grand Valley State
University

Management Systems increase library
usage of publisher’s content.

20. Title Considerations
Cataloging rules stipulate the official form of title is the
presentation of title that appears on:
ď‚— The title page or cover of
ď‚— The first issue
All other presentations of title are considered variants.
If a title appears on the title page/cover in both full form
and acronym, cataloging rules specify the full form will
be the official title
For eSerials, the official form of title will generally be the
same as the print serial title.
21. Serials Cataloging Principles
Serial metadata is transcribed from first issue.
Changes in the serial are noted over time:
Title Dance research : the journal of the Society for Dance Research
Pub info London, U.K. : Society for Dance Research, c1983-
Note Published: Oxford : Oxford University Press, 1990-1997; Edinburgh :
Edinburgh University Press, 1998-
Title Co-existence
Pub info Glasgow, Scotland : Co-Existence, [1964-c1995]
Note Title varies slightly, 1984-1995 : Coexistence
Publisher varies: M. Nijhoff, 1984-1995.
Place of publication varies: The Hague, 1984-1986 ; Dordrecht, 1987-
1995
22. Serials Cataloging Principles
When the title appearing on title page/cover changes
significantly, it is considered a new title and a successive
record is created
Title Materials & design
Pub info Reigate, Surrey, Eng. : Scientific and Technical Press, c1982-
Continues Materials in engineering
Title Materials in engineering
Pub info Reigate, Surrey, Eng., Scientific and Technical Press, 1980-1982.
Continues International journal of materials in engineering applications
Continued by Materials & design
23. Successive Entry and ISSN
When there is a major title change (per ISO 3297), a
new ISSN assigned
1978-1980: International journal of materials in engineering applications
ISSN 0151-5530
1980-1982: Materials in engineering ISSN 0261-3069
1982- : Materials & design ISSN 0264-1275
24. The Format Is Important
Each format is separately cataloged and assigned a
different ISSN:
ISSN 1464-1607 Admiralty notices to mariners (Print)
ISSN 1464-1674 Admiralty notices to mariners (Diskette)
ISSN 1464-1682 A update (CD-ROM)
ISSN 0953-5233 Gender & history (Print)
ISSN 1468-0424 Gender & history (Online)
25. Common ISSN Problems
ď‚— No ISSN
ď‚— Old ISSN (former titles) or Cancelled ISSN
ď‚— ISSN for other titles (related or not)
ď‚— Retrospective ISSN assignments
ď‚— Mistyped ISSN
ď‚— ISSN for other formats (print vs. e)
26. ISSN Strategies
