2. Study on different parts of sewing machine:
1.Introduction: A sewing machine is a machine which is mechanically driven needle used to
stitch materials together with thread. It is designed to join pieces of fabric or leather by means of
either a lockstitch or a chain stitch. Sewing machine makes a basic running stitch the same way,
with two sources of thread. The top needle takes the thread down into the fabric. It is caught and
looped via the bobbin apparatus and then pulled back up. The ‘‘feed dog’’ moves it along and the
next stitch begins. Every operation is continued again and again.
2.Objective:
1. To identify the basic part of sewing machine
2. To understand the function of sewing Machine
3. To obtain a clear knowledge on lock stitch sewing machine
4. To clearly observe the different parts of lock stitch sewing machine.
3.Apparatus:
sewing machine
Measuring Tape
Fabric cutting Scissors
3. Thread
Pins
Pin Cushion
Bobbin
Bobbin case
4.Working procedure:
Different parts of Sewing Machine:
Head
Pressure Foot lifter
Pedal
Needle
Pressure foot
Slide plate
Arm
Bed
Thread guider
Balance wheel
Feed dog
Pressure bar
Slide plate
Throat plate
4. Needle bar
Bobbin
Bobbin case
Spool pin
Head: is the complete sewing machine without a cabinet or stand.
Pressure Foot lifter: It helps pressure foot to pull up and down.
Pedal: It helps to control the machine and the speed of its needle.
5. Needle: It’s The main part of sewing. Needle make hole into fabric to put thread in it.
Sewing machine needle are the most changeable parts in sewing machine.
Pressure foot: It helps to keep fabric straight by pushing it down and hold the fabric in
position while sewing.
Arm: Arm is the curve part of the head containing mechanism for operating the needle.
6. Bed: Bed is the flat portion of the machine and beneath is the feed dog where it is
mounted, and the shuttle and thread are placed.
Balance Wheel: Balance Wheel sets the mechanism in motion and control needle by
pulling up and down.
7. Feed Dog: Feed Dog moves the fabric while sewing. specially helps fabric to go front.
Throat plate: Throat plate is the windows of the feed dog and it is where the bobbin
threads come out. It is used for smooth movement of fabric. A plate under the presser foot
with an opening through which the needle moves up and down during stitching. This plate
has seam guides engraved into it.
Bobbin: Bobbin s a metal spool for winding thread. It cover itself with thread to help
stitch. It is used for storing specific amount of sewing thread on it. Bobbin is a spool
underneath the bed that provides the lower thread.
8. Bobbin Case: Bobbin Case holds the bobbin. To control lower thread tension. This moves
into position to catch the top thread and form the stitch as the needle is lowered into the
bobbin chamber.
Spool pin: Spool pin used to keep thread come.
Thread take-up lever: During sewing the top thread passes through the thread take-up
lever. Thread take-up lever moves up and down with the needle.
9. 5.Precaution:
1.Choose a safe setup.
2. Eyes on the needle!
3. Unplug when changing the feet
4. Unplug the machine when you clean it
5. Always use the correct needle.
6.Conclusion: A sewing machine is a unique designed machine which is used for
stitching different parts of fabric together to make garments products. Sewing machines
are used in both lather and apparel industry. The main functions of the sewing machine are
sewing fabric or any other parts of materials. Earlier people used to sew by hand but after
the industrial revolution mechanical machine was created which is a handheld sewing
machine. Because of continuous development now we have automated sewing machine
available for home use, commercial use and industrial use.
