4. Introduction
It has many names.It is a freshwater fish
species in the carp’s family.it reaches a
maximum length of 1m(3.3ft).It’s size is
60cm.It can be caught all year around
the world.The body has perfectly
symmetrical small silver/grey scales and
it’s torpedo shaped elongated body
desighned for fast flowing water.
5. Distribution
Native to large rivers in the Indian
Subcontinent.It is widely aquafarmed and
introduced population exist outside its
native range.Found in freshwater
bodies,rarely in brackish water,some
common habitates are
ponds,canals,river,lake etc.The only
surviving wild population is in the Cauvery
River.Hatchling of it normally remain in the
surface or sub-surface water,while fry tend
to move to deeper water.Adults are
bottom dewellers.
6. Feeding
Bottom dweller fish species and primarily
detritus eater.Feed on both natural and
supplementary feeds.Talwar and Jhingran
described this species as bottom feeder
and subsisting mainly on decayed
vegetation well habituated in taking rice
bran,wheat bran,musterd oil cake and
other supplementary feed under
aquaculter system.Juveniles are
ominivorous to about 5cm tottle
length,adults are almost entirely
herbivores.
7. Reproduction
This species breeds in shallow water in the
rainy season .Breeds in open natural
waters.It does not breed in ponds. This
fish breeds during south west monsoon in
shallow pockets in marginal areas of the
water bodies with a depth 0f 0.5-1.0m
over a sand or clay substrate.It usually
breeds at 24-31deegry centigrade.A 6kg
female can lay a million eggs.This fish has
a rapid growth rate.
