Peltier Device: A Single Device Used For Cooling and
Heating
The arising need of generating the cool and heat effect is generally
accomplished by a phenomenon called as peltier effect. It is
responsible to product heat and cool effect by conducting electric flux
between two current conducting materials. The module or device
which used the concept of peltier effect is known as peltier device or
module. The peltier modules are known as thermoelectric coolers,
peltier heat pump, and solid state refrigerator.
In the beginning, the two plates constructed through different metals
were used in peltier devices. But now a day to make the peltier module
more precise and efficient in temperature control, a range of
semiconductor material is used. It also works as electricity generator by
heating up one side of device in a manner that temperature is greater
than other side and difference in voltage will build up. This effect is
usually termed as Seebeck effect or thermoelectric effect. It also works
as thermoelectric generator by applying the voltage across the device
which in results creates temperature difference between two sides.
Generally, peltier cooler are solid state active heat pumps responsible
to transfer heat between two sides with consumption of electrical
energy and depending on the direction of the current. The main
application of such devices is cooling. However, it can be used either for
heating or cooling or for both.
