Suggestopedia elt
1. The word is a portmanteau of the words suggestion
and pedagogy.
2. Suggestopedia is a method developed by Bulgarian psychiatrist-
educator Georgie Lozanov. He called this method as -"science
..,concerned with the systematic study of the nonrational and or
nonconscious influences"
Suggestopedia tries to harness these non-conscious influences and
redirect them to optimize learning.
The method applied positive suggestion when it first appeared in
the 1970s,but the modern version of suggestopedia focuses more on
desuggestive learning and is often called desuggestopedia.
This method is basically based on the modern understanding of how
our brain works and how we learn most effectively.
A student friendly classroom environment and the use of music are
the key characteristics of suggestopedia.
3. The suggestopedic approach can be talked about by taking in
several perspectives:-
1. Theory of language.
2. Theory of learning.
3. Authority
4. Double –Plannedness
5. Infantilization
6. Intonation,Rhythm and Concert Pseudo-passiveness
4. Suggestopedia emphasizes on memorization
of vocabulary pairs of the target language
and the native language.
It suggests a view of the language where the
lexis is central and lexical translation rather
than contextualization is stressed.
It recommends study of whole meaningful
texts ,which should be above all interesting.
5. Suggestion being the heart of suggestopedia
has the power to conjure up visions which in
turn helps in memorization of the vocabulary.
It creates a constant set-up to reserve by the
use of concentrative psycho-relaxation.
Suggestopedia has a suggestive-
desuggestive sense which means it also helps
in unloading unwanted memories from
memory banks and loading the useful
memories so to facilitiate learning of the
target language.
6. Lozanov,in suggestopedia gives a large list of
prescriptions to the facilitators of this
method which enables the students to
experience the facilitator and the
establishment having great authority since
people are best inspired and influenced by
information coming from a authoritian
source.
He talks about the “ritual placebo”which
enables the students to perceive that they are
under great authority.
7. Infantilization basically refers to a parent –
child like relationship between the teacher
and the student.
It helps in improving teacher-student
relationship and thus facilitates learning.
8. This refers to the learning the learner gets
not only from the material but also from the
classroom environment, music and even from
the personality of the teacher.
9. Varying the tone and rhythm of the presented
material has been important features of
suggestopedia. Varying the tone helps with
getting rid of the monotony of reading a text
repetitively and inturn helps to make a class a
interesting one.
It helps to emotionalize and give meaning to
the linguistic material which the learner can
easily relate to and thus can memorize easily.
10. Suggestopedia can essentially be divided into four stages :
1. Presentation-This is the first stage. In this stage the teacher
strives to make the class enjoyable and engaging. In this stage
,suggestion and desuggestion happen at the same time.
Meaningful and emotionally connectable texts should be taken
into account.
2. Concert-The two concerts are the part of the receptive phase
of the presentation. In the first phase, the teacher calls her
student’s attention to some of the grammatical mistakes in the
story that the teacher read out and then reads it out in the
target language.
In the second phase, the students are asked to keep their copy
of the story aside and simply listen to their teacher reading it
out in the target language. This phase is accompanied by
music.
11. 3.Primary activation-This stage marks the start
of the active stage of the lesson. The
students read the dialogue out playfully
individually or in groups.
4.Creative Adaption-This is the last part of the
class. Here the students are made to
engaging activities which would help them to
learn the new material and use them in class.
In this methods activities like singing and
dancing are encouraged.
12. Suggestopedia aims to give its learners
advanced conversational proficiency in the
language in a short period of time.
It not only focuses on memorization of
vocabulary pairs but also tries to teach the
students to come up with creative solution to
their problems.
It aims at increasing memory power for the
student by “positive ,comprehensive
stimulation of personality.
13. A suggestopedic course lasts thirty days and
consists of ten units of study.
The unit study is organised around three days .In
the first day the teacher discusses the general
content of the text. The second and the third day
are devoted to primary or secondary elaboration.
The whole course has a lot of presentation and
performances.
The last day of the course is devoted to a play
that the students have to construct based on the
contents of the class.
14. There are a lot of activities involving
imitation, question & answer and role play.
The listening activities are the one original to
suggestopedia which concerns text and text
vocabulary in the first unit.
The instructor, him/herself acts out many
texts so as to help the learner remember the
vocabulary of the target language.
While the instructor acts the text out, the
students are asked to take a deep breath and
relax.
15. The primary role of the teacher is to create a situation in which
the learner is most suggestible and present linguistic material in
a way receptive to the learner.
There are a few teacher behaviours that Lozanov lists, which
are:-
1. Show absolute confidence in the method.
2. Display fastidious conduct in manners and dress.
3. Strictly observe the initial stages of the teaching process which
includes choice, play of music as well as punctuality.
4. Maintaining a solemn attitude towards the session.
5. Respond tactfully to poor papers.
6. Give focus on global rather than analytical material
7. Maintain a modest enthusiasm.
The instruction material consists of direct support
materials, primarily text and tape and indirect supprt materials
which includes the classroom structure itself.
16. The learners are expected to be committed to
the class and its activities .
Learners must not try to figure out,
manipulate, or study the material presented
but must maintain a pseudo-passive state, in
which the material rolls over and through
them.
Students are expected to tolerate
infantilization by accepting complete
authority of the teacher.
17. A four hour language class can be divided
into three distinct parts:-
Oral review section: The teacher and students
sit and discuss previously learnt material in
class.
New materials like new dialogue and native
language translation materials are presented
and discussed.
The séance or the concert session-This is the
session suggestopedia is best known for.
18. Memorization of Vocabulary.
Acquisition of habits of speech related to
communication.
Increased understanding of the target
language.
It acts as a confidence boost for the new
learner.
Helps in finding out creative solutions to
problems.
19. Infantilization can sometimes become
irritating for the learners
It is best applicable to a limited number of
students.
Limited Homework.
Grammatical errors are not corrected.
20. Suggestopedia has received mixed response
from it’s users.
Lozanov makes it evident that suggestopedia
is presented to the students in the form of a
suggestive-desuggestive ritual placebo
system.
Though suggestopedia is an effective
technique,it has a lot of downsides to it, but
still it can be put to great use if combined
with other teaching techniques.
