This is a beginners guide to the Sanskrit grammar. This part contains up to basic rules for constructing simple sentences. Word joining have been just touched upon as it will be included in the next part of this series.
3. Beginning -
• Some 2500 years ago Maharshi Panini did some serious linguistic researches on the language
used that time and framed the rules of the language – he was the first to made this संस्कार
(samskaara). So the language that he framed is called संस्कृ तम्
• Those basic rules, it is believed to be, given to him by Lord Shiva himself – so the rules are
called महेश्वरसूत्राणि or शिविब्दम्
• They are the foundation of the Sanskrit alphabets and grammar
• Panini’s work is one of the finest linguistic science work ever done – it defines unambiguously the
rules to form the words much like today’s computer languages like C, Python, Java etc. He put
them all in his book अष्टाध्यायी

4. स्वरविण व वयांजनविण
• स्वरविण – Pure sounds produced effortlessly using our vocal instruments
• वयांजनविण – When added before a vowel – the vowel sound gets modified (वयांजन / वयांजना) and
can be produced effortlessly
4
5. Making words
• Consonants take up vowels to add up creating more and more words – once meanings are
attached to it. These are all Nouns
• Based on the ending letter we have classified the words as अ-कारान्त इ-कारान्त अन्-भगान्त
(वयांजनान्त) etc. as shown above

6. Using words
There are so many things to describe, one grouping cannot be sufficient !! Further groupings:
• शलङ्गम् – Origin is bit obscure though Panini had some philosophical background behind such
grouping पुंल्ललङ्गम्, स्त्रीशलङ्गम्, नपुंसकशलङ्गम्
• वचनम्– एकवचनम्, , बहुवचनम्> How many or numbers / counts
• पुरूषााः - Determines position of the subject or narrator (कताण) Particularly important to denote the
action
• In front of eyes of narrator > प्रथम
• Between narrator and all others > मध्यम
• The narrator himself / herself, the best of all as describer > उत्तम
• There are action words (क्रिया) as well – Another grouping is required to denote the relation
with क्रिया > कारकााः There are 6 such cases.
6
7. Simple Word Form - अ-कारान्त पुंल्ललङ्ग
• Taking a broad group like अ-कारान्त or आ-कारान्त with पुंल्ललङ्गम ्or स्त्रीशलङ्गम ्or
नपुंसकशलङ्गम्descriptors we can create a table for each such representative words of the
class – This table is called

11. Pronouns – सवणनामपद (सवणनामातन / सवाणदद)
• Pronoun behave like nouns – They are the place holders for nouns. The position is important in case of
pronouns as it includes I as well and you along with all others. The position is called पुरूष
• सवाणदद Literally means सवण words
• There are 3 पुरूष denoting the position of speaker –
• प्रथम – Any object that the speaker can see
• मध्यम – Any object in front of speaker with whom he/she speaks
• उत्तम – Speaker himself/herself
• Like nouns pronouns / सवणनामपद have similar word forms – 7 X 3 tables (see slides later in this deck)
• Some pronoun words are – अहम ् (अस्मद् / मद्), त्वम ् (युस्मद् / त्वद्), तद्, इदम ्, एतद्, क्रकम ्, भवन्त् / भवत्
• As before, we will study the first case only for the moment.
