Writing Assignment 2
Alex
Based on the study of Alex the parrot, I feel language is normal to human animals. In the study
of Alex, Alex was able to speak 150 words, could do math, and recognize colors. For non-human animals
that is not normal, he is the only parrot studied that can do that. When the study was conducted they
tried testing another parrot the same way and got different results. That’s how they knew that Alex was
different and to be classified as a human animal. Language development is a complex cognitive skill and
Alex was able to use it to communicate with humans not just other parrots. Granted he wasn’t taught it
in the same time frame as humans but he was still able to learn it. He was able to distinguish speech
sounds and instead of squawking like a bird he could actually speak and understand what was said to
him. Alex was very intelligent for a bird, he was almost functioning like a human, responding to
questions, understanding the colors and how to differ them and math. Alex and a chimpanzee are the
only non-humans to be able to show the numerical value of a summed set, something that was thought
to depend on language. Humans use both prototypes and exemplars when categorizing information and
I feel that Alex did that exact thing. Alex used more of prototypes to help him because that involved
images. For example, when asked which color had five blocks he answered correctly cause he was able
to visual see the different colors and was also able to count.
