3. DIGESTION OF FOOD
The process of digestion is accompanied
by mechanical and chemical process
4. DIGESTION IN MOUTH
• Digestion of food begins in the mouth.
• The food ingested is masticated by teeth
(chewed) and broken into smaller particles so
that the surface area provided for the action
of enzyme.
• The food is mixed with saliva secreted by
salivary glands which helps to moistens and
lubricates the food and aids in swallowing.
5. • Saliva is alkaline in nature, contains an
enzyme called amylase and lysozyme.
• Amylase converts starch into maltose

• Lysozyme present in saliva act as an
antibacterial agent that prevent infections.
• Saliva helps to digest carbohydrates in our
mouth
6. • The masticated food is rolled into a ball or
bolus by the tongue and passed to the
pharynx into oesophagus by swallowing.
• During this process the epiglottis closes and
prevent the food from entering the trachea
(wind pipe)- enters the stomach.
