This document discusses testing equipment used for thermal spraying aluminium coatings. It describes tests performed before blasting includes blotter tests and checking grit quality. After blasting, dust contamination, surface profile replica tape, salt contamination, and temperature/humidity tests are done. Additional tests after coating include dry film thickness measurement, adhesion testing using a pull-off tester, bend testing, and holiday detection by applying voltage to find defects. The tests help ensure proper surface preparation and coating quality.

1. Testing Equipments used in
Thermal Spraying Aluminium
Coating (TSA)
Made By : ASHWARY JAIN
Site Engineer
ATS Techno Pvt. Ltd.
2. Categories for the Test
Performed
Before Blasting
After Blasting
After TSA
3. Test performed before Blasting
Blotter Test
Pre-Surface Preparation
Visual inspection for defects be conducted prior to blasting.
Blotting Paper Test
A highly absorbent type of paper used to absorb an excess of
liquid substances from the surface of objects.
It is made from different materials of varying thickness,
softness, etc.
4. Continued….
Performed with white absorbent paper before blasting
process.
Test to check Grit/Garnet quality
To check and verify that it is free from excess of oil & dust.
Take a glass container with water into it.
Put some amount of garnet particles, stir it.
Leave the container for some time to check the quality of
garnet.
Verify whether it is pass or fail.
5. Test performed after Blasting
Dust Contamination Test
A specific, clear adhesive tape
is placed on the blasted surface.
Tape is pulled and adhered to
the displaying board or white
paper.
6. The tape indicates a pattern of
adhered dust to the surface and
is compared with the pictorial
figure provided on ISO 8502-3
The acceptance class depends
on the customer, but normally 1
& 2 are accepted. Further can be
concluded from table given
below.
Quantity of
Dust
Description for acceptance criteria
1 Lowest Dust, which indicates that surface is free from dust.
2 Acceptable scale which is mostly preferred by the
customer.
3 Shows amount of dust is more and need to clean, can be
accepted by some customers
4 Shows amount of dust is more and need to clean. Not
accepted.
5 Highest Dust, which is subjected to cleaning and re-test.
7. Surface Profile Test
Testex Replica Tape
Consists of a layer of compressible foam affixed to an
incompressible polyester substrate.
9. Salt Contamination Test
Bresle Salt Kit
To determine concentration of
soluble salts on metal surfaces prior to
coating application.
The bresle test kit is supplied with
o 50 x Bresle Patches
o Conductivity Meter
o Calibration Solution.
o 3 x 5ml Syringes
o 25ml Beaker
o 200ml distilled water in soft carrying case
10. Temperature Gauge
Hygrometer
An instrument used for measuring
the water vapour in the
atmosphere.
Integrated magnets allow the dew
point gauge to be attached to the
substrate during remote logging
Stores 25,000 records in up to
999 batches
Dustproof and waterproof gauge
with fully sealed sensors
(equivalent to IP66)
Robust temperature sensors
Easy to use, intuitive menu
structure
Measure and record
climatic parameters:
Relative humidity
Air temperature
Surface temperature
Dew point temperature
ΔT (the difference between
surface temperature and dew
point)
Specific Humidity
11. DFT
A dry film thickness gauge is a tool or instrument
used to measure the dry film thickness on a metal
or non-metal substrate.
It is calibrated before used on job.
We have particular standards for calibration
12. Adhesion Test
In the coating industries, adhesion testing is often
used to determine if the coating will adhere
properly to the substrates to which they are
applied.
Commonly used measuring techniques are
performed with a pull-off adhesion tester.
13. Bend Test
Determination of materials ductility, bend
strength, fracture strength and resistance to
fracture.
The sample is placed horizontally across
two supports and then a force applied to the
top of the midpoint deforming the sample
into a “U” shape.
14. Holiday Test
Holiday testing will help to extend the life of
the coating system.
This helps to find the gap left on the job
after coating.
Closed storage tank is provided or the
water is injected on coated job for a
duration of 24hrs and then we can visualise
manually whether it is failed or passed.
