How Do I Become A Volunteer?
Volunteers In Medicine is a medical “home-base” for low-income, underserved adults and their households in Monroe and Owen County who can’t afford health care coverage. Even with the Affordable Care Act, many individuals lack the financial means to pay for high deductibles, co-pays, and other out of pocket expenses. Services provided include primary health care, routine physicals, women’s health care, behavioral health care, diabetes management and counseling, physical therapy, specialty care and referrals to specialists, respiratory therapy, and smoking cessation. They also have a pharmacy on-site where patients have access to some medications at no charge.
A major problem that can result when patients don’t have access to preventive care is that a small, treatable issue can turn into something more serious over time. This leads to costly emergency room visits and procedures that can be burdensome financially to both the patients and our local economy. At Volunteers In Medicine, the mission is to provide patients with the preventive care and services they need to be healthy and happy.
For our project, we really wanted to focus on the bread and butter of VIM, which is their volunteers. Nothing they do would be possible without them!
(Then read slide)
First, why do people volunteer? Why do they quit? To appreciate your volunteer, you need to know what motivates them to be there and what would hinder them from returning.
Nearly 200 medical professionals and others volunteer at the clinic—but additional help is often needed. Volunteers in Medicine clinics rely on donated time from both retired and active physicians and nurses, as well as volunteers from the community to provide administrative support.
Read before medical:
The core function of Volunteers In Medicine Clinic is to provide quality health care to low-income, underserved Monroe and Owen County residents in need. This requires a range of medical professionals. If you have a background in medicine, you may be a great fit for one or more of the following volunteer positions:
Read before Non Medical:
While the primary goal of Volunteers In Medicine is to provide medical care, it takes administrative support to make that happen. Whatever your skill set or prior experience, there may be a current need for you among the volunteers at VIM. Experience in the health care industry is a plus, but not always required
We polled lay volunteers at VIM to get their feedback. We asked them the following questions and had them anonymously answer.
We will touch on a few of these questions, and for more information, review the handout!
Based on our survey (20 participants) the majority only spend 1-4 hours a week volunteering. That goes to show you do not have to commit to a huge amount of time to take part in community volunteering.
Every one of our surveyors mentioned the need for awareness. Others commented that many of their friends and classmates have no idea such a place even exists, let alone that they can be a part of it!
Summary: Get the word out!
Fact of the matter- food attracts people! EVERY single one of those surveyed mentions snacks or refreshments were the perfect incentive! We wanted to add that most mentioned how much they loved VIM’s coffee bar and array of creamers at our disposal!
On the left, we have the hours worked from 2014.
Our first group is office/clerical/data work. Such as patient scheduling, pulling charts, filing, scanning records, coding, etc.
Our second group is Clinical volunteers. This would include most medical staff such as dental, RN’s, LPN’s, med students, psychologists, acupuncture, spine, orthopedic, etc.
Our last group is our medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistant volunteers.

This really shows how important those volunteers are. Almost 400,000 would be spent on employees alone, yet this care is volunteered and given to help out the underprivileged in our community! How awesome!
Hopefully you have seen how important of a role you can play! If you want to get involved, I encourage you to do so. If not at VIM, then elsewhere!
Also, Volunteers in medicine is not just Bloomington based. In Indiana alone, there are locations in Batesville, Columbus, and Crawfordsville as well!
