Burnout has been a hot topic in both the open source community and broader tech industry, but too often these discussions simply acknowledge that burnout exists. We can do better. The care and feeding of ourselves is a start, but how about the care and feeding of our community?
Together we will talk about the symptoms of burnout, setting boundaries within toxic work cultures, and the importance of self-care.
It seems as if being busy is the new status symbol.

The addiction to being a hero is no different than any other addiction: heroes to spend the bulk of their time on saving the day, and nowhere near enough time on transferring knowledge and skills to others
No matter how brilliant, hard-working, and heroic an you might be, no human can keep up the pace forever and as soon as you can’t, they’ll penalize you.
When we undertake a new task, we often start by experiencing high job satisfaction, commitment, energy, and creativity. This is especially true of a new job role

The second stage of burnout begins with an awareness of some days being more difficult than others. You may find your optimism waning

Some people engage in unhealthy coping strategies like drinking too much, smoking, being too sedentary, eating too much junk food, not eating enough or not getting enough sleep.
Detachment in personal relationships
Social withdrawal from friends and/or family
I either feel like a bad co-worker or a bad parent. I’m always failing at something.
Burnout and chronic stress may interfere with your ability to pay attention or concentrate. When we're stressed, our attention narrows and even small tasks become a huge burden
You become cynical about your working conditions and the people you work with. You may also emotionally distance yourself and feel numb about your work
Over a long period of time, serious chronic stress can create real health problems like digestive issues, heart disease, depression and obesity.
I don’t trust myself anymore
I doubt whether or not i’m even cut out for this
People can become exhausted simply by trying to figure out what they are supposed to be doing.
Multi-tasking reduces your productivity because your brain can only focus on one thing at a time – this continued stress definitely leads to burnout.
If another task is given to you, ask your manager what they suggest you drop in order to complete that task. For larger projects break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Your employer will ask and ask because they expect you to know your limits.
, in fact, you could delete the apps from your phone all-together and unless you’re on call, there’s nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow.
Find something outside of work that you are passionate about that's challenging, engaging and really gets you going. If your entire identity is work then you’re ripe for burnout.
Have a clear separation between work and home. Research suggests that having fewer than six hours of sleep per night is a major risk factor for burnout
I believe that poor management is directly responsible for burnout.
And set reasonable expectations.
Everyone wants to know that what they’re doing is meaningful otherwise, what’s the point?
I’d rather take a little longer to get something done than ask my reports to sacrifice their sanity to make me look good.
People will feel obligated to respond even if you tell them they don’t have to
Many people don’t take vacation because they have anxiety about the work they will have when they return. Help them figure out how to manage their workload while they’re out.
Do they sound stressed or over-worked? Can you take something off their plate?
Our jobs are mainly small wins, but managers tend to only recognize the big ones. People crave recognition, so show them that you appreciate them early and often otherwise they’ll kill themselves trying to gain your approval.
