ton annually

world
5. Climate and soil
CLIMATE
Fennel is a cool season crop well distributed rainfall is ideal for
flowering. It requires dry land and cool climate for its better
yield and superior quality.
It grow well in the areas receiving an annual rainfall of
150~300mm
SOIL
Fennel can be grown on all type of soil but well drained loamy or
black soil rich in organic matter are best suited.
6. SOWING TIME AND SEED RATE
Sowing Time
Can be sown from Sept-Nov.
Transplanting method seed is sown in June or July and seedling are
transplanted after 45-60.
In hill area May- June is best.
Seed rate
Direct sowing - 9-12 kg/ha.
In transplanting - 3-4 kg/ha.
7. Varieties
GJ fennel 2- Developed in the Spices Research Centre. It
matures within 159 days and the seed contain 2.4%
essential oil. High yield variety. Yield is 19.4q/ha.
CO 1-Developed in TNAU. Matures in 210-220 days. Avg.
yield of 5.7q/ha.
PF 35- it is developed in GJAU. Matures with in 215-225
days. Yield is 13q/ha.
RF101~ Tall erect with stout stem , long grain matures in
100 to 130 days ave. yield 15.5q/ha.
S-79, GJ F 1, RF125,, RF 205 , Hisar , swarup,up101 etc.
8. Manure and Fertilizer
Apply 150q/ha well decomposed
FYM the time at field preparation.
In addition to this 40 kg each of N,
p and k as basel dose and 40 kg N
into equal split at 30 and 50 days
after sowing.
9. Irrigation
Frist irrigation done after seed sowing and
thereafter one or two light irrigation are required
until seed germination. afterwards , the crop is
irrigated at an interval of 15~25 days water stress
must be avoided during flowering and seed
formation to improve yield.
Weed control
Weed infestation is a serious problem. Frist
hoeing and weeding at 30 days after sowing
by mechanical and chemical means.
10. Harvesting
Fennel matures in 170~180 days. Harvesting is
done by plucking the umbels when seed are fully
developed and mature but still green. Harvesting
duration lasts for a month with plucking being
done 2/3 at 10 days intervals.
Yield
On an average, fennel yield 9~10q/ha
11. Post Harvest Management s
Drying of fennel seeds
Harvested umbels are dried in sun 2 days and
then in shade 8 to 10 days. Care must be
taken not to sundry the umbels too long as
long exposure of seed to the sun reduces the
quality of the produce
