Wood is a hard, fibrous tissue found in trees that has been used for fuel and construction for hundreds of thousands of years. It is composed of cellulose fibers embedded in a matrix of lignin, and performs important structural and nutrient distribution functions for trees. With about one trillion tons on Earth that grows at 10 billion tons per year, wood is an abundant renewable resource that was harvested at a rate of 3.5 billion cubic meters in 1991 primarily for furniture and construction uses.
