1. TITLE:
Translucent concrete by using transparent aggregate and
binder.
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND:
Transparent concrete is a concrete-based building material with light-Transmissive properties due to
embedded light optical elements usually Optical fibers.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The main disadvantage is this concrete is very costly because of the optical fibers. One approach is to
exchange the traditional ingredients with transparent or translucent alternatives. Aggregates can be
replaced with transparent alternatives, and the bonding material itself may be able to transmit light by
incorporating clear resins in the mix. This will help in production of transparent concrete at low cost and
its commercialization.
The main disadvantage is this concrete is very costly because of the optical
NEEDS OF TRANSPARENT CONCRETE. HOW
TRANSPARENT CONCRTE ADDRESS THESE ISSUE:
When a solid wall is imbued with the ability to transmit light, it means that a home can use fewer lights in
their house during daylight hours. It can at the same time be building material and light source, can
separate and connect, can be wall or floor, ambient lighting, or eye-catcher. Translucent concrete is also a
great insulating material that protects against outdoor extreme temperatures while also letting in daylight.
This makes it an excellent compromise for buildings in harsh climates, where it can shut out heat or cold
without shutting the building off from daylight. It can be used to illuminate underground buildings and
structures, such as subway stations. Translucent concrete could provide safety applications in the future
such as speed bumps that could be lit “from below to make them more visible at night”, or to light indoor
fire escapes in case of a power failure. It even has the potential to be sustainable; the aggregate can be
replaced with crushed recycled glass.
METHODOLOGY:
1. Objective: transparent concrete/ transparent aggregate/ transparent resin mix.
2. Select the materials based on the objectives, cost, and availability in Pakistan. The materials used
in transparent concrete typically include cement, fine and water, chemical admixtures, and optical
fibers. The materials must be carefully selected based on their properties, availability, and cost.
2. 3. Experimentally it has been proved that using optical fibers in transparent concrete cause reduction
in the compressive strength of concrete. To compromise these different types of secondary
cementitious materials can be used.
MIX DESIGNE:
The procedure of making transparent concrete is same as that of normal concrete. In transparent
concrete only the different is the addition of optical fibers. Since previously it was very time consuming
to place optical fiber in concrete, but recently different method has been introduced which can
eradicate this issue. Materials used are cement, sand, secondary cementitious material and optical
fibers or transparent aggregate.
FEATURE OF TRANSPARENT CONCRETE:
96% concrete, 4% optical fiber. Density 2100-2400 Kg/m2.
Fiber distribution Organic. Finished Polished. Compressive strength 50 N/mm2. Bending Tensile
strength 7 N/mm2
