5. Agriculture in Bangladesh and problems
Agriculture is the largest
economic and employment
sector in Bangladesh,
accounting for 23% of its
gross domestic product and
65% of its labor force.
It has a total land
area of 14,570 km2
with cultivated land
accounting for 60%
of the total land
area.
The population is
still growing at a
1.37 percent annual
rate, but cultivated
land is shrinking at
the same time.

7. Climate Change
Founded on a delta, flooding,
natural disasters, drought, and
saltwater intrusion have caused
Bangladesh to lose 1.75 percent
of its arable land.
8. Modern agricultural
practices in
Bangladesh
The goals of
sustainable agriculture
in Bangladesh are
productivity,
environmental stability,
economic profitability,
and social and
economic equity.
9. Modern practices used in Bangladesh
for sustainable agriculture (i.e., crop
diversification, change in cropping
pattern and rotations, integrated
farming systems, etc.)
A very recent adoption Polytunnel
technique (e. g. Summer Tomato
Production)
10. Biotechnology, Tissue culture &
MAS(Marker Assisted Selection)
o The Government of Bangladesh has
demonstrated a willingness to adopt and
implement a modern agricultural policy
framework and guidelines which support
the safe and appropriate use of science
and technology, including biotechnology,
to address the country’s food security
concerns.
11. With innovative biotechnology support from the world’s
scientific community, Bangladesh is seeking to play a
role in the advancement of modern biotechnology
research and trials of new genetically engineered (GE)
varieties of essential trait-based crops, such as rice,
potato, brinjal (eggplant), tomato, wheat, and cotton.
12. GE research on various rice traits is widening
with an aim to develop climate-smart
varieties, essential for the Bangladesh rice
sector.
However, the regulatory process for
biotechnology in Bangladesh is at times
inefficient, with major delays in the approval
process of certain GE varieties.
13. Floating Gardens?
On 15/12/2015 Rome, Italy, Four traditional farming
systems in Bangladesh and Japan have been
designated today by FAO as "Globally Important
Agricultural Heritage Systems." One of them is
called "Floating gardens in Bangladesh".
A form of hydroponics, in which plants draw up
nutrients dissolved in water, they can be combined
with fishing activities in the flood-waters
underneath.
