Colors
Scope and Sequence
Goals- Students will be able to recognize and identify 8 colors.
Students will be able to identify items that match the color words.
Lesson 1- Introduce color words. Begin with the color blue, and go on a hunt around the
classroom for blue items. Then, back at their seats they will draw a picture of their item
and write the word blue.
Lesson 2- Red- Red is a warning color. It is used when we want people to stop and other
signs. Read a book about all the various things that are red. Independently the students
will use red paper to collage the work red on an outlined paper.
Lesson 3- Yellow- The color yellow is good for getting our attention. Read a yellow book
about the different places we see yellow and what it can mean. Students will break into 2
groups. 1 group will paint the word yellow. 2nd group will paint the body of a minion and
assemble the next day. The groups will rotate after 7 minutes.
Lesson 4- Review of Primary Colors- In reviewing the first 3 primary colors students will
explore what they are capable of. After reading Mouse Paint the students will discover
for themselves what the different color combinations are with paint filled bags.
Lesson 5- Green- Green is a color we see in many places and it is often used to tell us it
is okay to go. We are going to make a stop light to review green and colors we have gone
over already. Then we will go outside and play red light, green light.
Lesson 6- Orange- Orange is both a color and a fruit. There are more orange things we
can eat than just an orange. Can you help me with my grocery list? What do all the
things on my list have in common? They are Orange!
Lesson 7- Purple- Read Harold and the purple crayon. Students will review the color and
make a new creation having used Harold’s purple crayon. Where is it going to take you?
Lesson 8- Review and experiment- All the colors are provided for experimentation of
their mixture and what happens when these colors (dye and vinegar) are mixed with
baking soda and the interesting images they create.
